LSR 200K 1/10/2009 (Rio Vista Rumble route)

Well I'm glad to have gotten that out my system, no need to ride a very windy brevet on the fixed gear again. Slower on both the outbound and inbound legs due to gearing and aerodynamics. I expect I barely managed 10mph for the second half! As the longest ride on a DF in a long time the butt and shoulders were complaining as well. Starting out with the 30mph tailwind I was spun out and dropped before the turn of Lake Ridge so it was a pretty lonely day as well. I stopped and took some pictures along the way to pass the time. I did pass Bruce Richards and before they broke off I passed, was caught by and passed the George Evans, Geo, and Jeff Elmer 300K trio. Also due to some navigation error Jerry Austin Surprised me by arriving at Maypearl as I was preparing to leave, and finishing up the world's worst cheese personal pan pizza. The climbs out of Itasca and on Old Buena Vista road were tough, but the worst has to have been the shallow inclines up the service road on 67 directly into the headwind. It was a long 4 miles at 7-8mph. Surprisingly I caught Jerry near the turnaround stopped to put on reflective gear. We had leapfrogged twice again on the last section, as he caught me after Maypearl but stopped for a phone call, and then I stopped at the Walgreen's for a quick break and he kept going. Being able to coast he took off down Lake Ridge Pkwy, and his blinky was out of site by time I got down to the last bridge. Boy was I glad to be done. Mark looked like be really did Blaze away, I only saw him at the start, I think he finished hours ahead of me!

Total Time 11:20, bike time 9:51 for 12.7 avg over 125.34 miles. I managed to spin my 72" gear up to 27.5mph (128rpm) down the hill into Blum from the River Stop control. Fresher legs after the stop, I had trouble on the downwind sections much past 24-25mph, if I had the Corsa I'm sure I would have been well up in the 30's with the tailwind.

I'm sure I'll remember it fondly someday, but right now I'm still feeling it!

Yeah that tailwind up front was nice but coming back into the crosswind and headwind wasn't my favorite. I had kept up with the main group up until mile 29.38 and then the chain falls off the front. I try to shift it over but it wouldn't take. So I stop and put it back on and try and shift the rear and it won't go. Chain fell off in back too so I try and pull it out a few time. Wouldn't work so I try and take the wheel off which won't go. Find the chain was caught in back between the cassette/chainstay under the derailleur bolt. So I had to back the derailleur out to loosen the chain. If I hadn't looked at the derailleur alignment before I tightened it back up I would have wasted alot less time in that ditch.

Shortly after that I talked to Christine briefly after and in explaining remembered I had loosened the rear axle so I stopped to get the tools out to tighten that back down and more time is wasted and a few more folks pass me by. After I got back on the road it was pretty good going but surely not the fast pace I was going at with the group. My other mistake happened the night before when I printed my own que sheet. About where the 300k and 200k split my printed que sheet had shortened "Turn left at ### road - cross traffic does not stop - Stores" to just "Stores" so I thought the road wasn't supposed to change and it did so I was looking around my GPS and my que sheet trying to figure out where I turned wrong. After a few minutes some 300k'ers took pity on me and pointed me in the right direction probably wondering why I thought I was on the wrong road.

Had a little snack, not a pizza thankfully, and spent a little too much time at the first stop before heading out onto the road because I sure felt cold when I got back on the bike. After the first stop the wind was blowing sideways alot and being a huge pain. Shortly after leaving the stop I was riding along with a nice 6 pack of big dogs with one crossing back and forth in front of me as I was cruising along. My own little canine escort! Eventually saw the H3uT at the Exxon and knew I was at the second stop since Gary was following us about. The last section was a bit of hills and wind but by the time I got to 67 I was crawling along into that headwind followed briefly by flying down lake ridge and crawling back up to the marina

Overall Time was 9:20
Bike time was 8:20

So look at those shoes and I don't think I was even cranking at the time. What do you think am I losing at least a watt there with all that flex Cheesy

I may try my speedplays with road shoes. Woot first one in, ok yeah I know most folks did the 300k or did something crazy like ride a fixed gear Wink

Congratulations to all who completed the 200/300K rides yesterday in very tough weather conditions. Nelson riding a "fixie" on a 200K? Are you serious? You are beast(and true Randonneur)!

EV, man that is very,very respectable time considering your mechanicals & wrong turn. It sounds like EV has the "rando" bug?! You both mentioned the wind,BUT ,how COLD was it? I don't think it ever warmed up past the mid 40's yesterday.

Rio Vista Rumble is on our "to do" list as a speed route.

It was warmer than last year without the windchill. 39-47-39, but the wind made it feel cold enough that I never removed any clothing.
I had a couple polypropolene layers and a jacket, with glove covers, and a helmet liner, and of course tights. Never was cold, just tired.

I don't trust your definition of "cold"...I think we have different definitions. Actually ,it was the wind that scared me on a Friday ride. Again ,job well done to you & Mike(and LSR riders).
I thought that was Jerry Austin sitting at the table.

I came back inside, put my cold hands on Terrie's neck, and she let out a good shriek!!! Today was much nicer, I did 42 miles with the Rockwall tri gang...

Well I thought it was a wrong turn but it wasn't which made it worse because I'm looking at the map going where in the world could I have turned that I didn't. I thought the GPS had put me on a shortcut and I was really concerned about how far I was going to have to head back. Silly stuff.

Cold? It wasn't too cold. I just had a single pair of wool socks on with those sandals on my feet. Cold Gear Tights/Turtleneck, Bacchetta jersey *shh*, wind vest and the lightweight arm warmers stayed on just in the am. I had my lightweight balaclave on in the morning but just used ear warmers occasionaly the rest of the day.

Mark,...and it wasn't hot when we rode the 200K Brevet in Italy(August). Your definition of COLD is much different than mine ,just as my definition of hot is different than yours.

Have they announced where they are going to be? I see TBD on the schedule hmm.

Depends on where I suppose. If it is too far probably I might skip it and ride with the local group so I can get some chores or work done.

I do hate the 39-47 zone. It is cold yes but it isn't brrrr cold and 47 is just too much heating although I found it really odd I could see my breath alot during the day out there. I'm looking forward to thursday and a little 20 degree weather riding.

Mark ,now the 160k on the 31st is off the LSR website,replaced by a 100K Populaiare on 2/1. Enjoy the cold weather.

I don't know why anyone would say that I mean the below was one of my favorite commutes which obviosly wasn't in TX Tongue

My old cross campus twas such a nice ride.
