Big 'ol crit - April 2009
Oct 13th, 2008, 11:02am

So now that you have had the chance to compete against the uptights in a time trial, is there any interest in having a recumbent category in a criterium that IC3 is planning for April?  I would need enough of you committed to make it happen before i make the flyer.  Or, perhaps even just a shorter exhibition race?  Standard length would be 30 minutes, exhibition 15.  Course will be approximately 1 mile.

Let me know!

could be fun!  I could likely do it, given date, time, location, and other details fleshed out.

you betcha!

Kevin shared some of his planning with me, He thinks if we could get a certain minimum number it could be put into the program.  Seems he thought 10-15 riders, which might be a pretty tall order, as this would involve having a USA cycing license, which several of us already have from the HCTT's.  I'm fairly certain that this is going to be in lower SW McKinney, a couple of miles from my house (near 121 and Custer).  So I know we had 8+ participants at the Tejas 500, maybe this could happen.

Take Care,
Nelson.

If it was the difference between having it or not I volunteer to go out and get my butt kicked. April gives me some time to get in a little bit of shape. My wifes 700 is probably faster then my giro hmm. Nah I don't think the 700 would mix well and if I really stripped down the giro 26 to how it came from the factory it would probably go pretty good.

I don't think I've even ridden a LWB but my giro26 can dive pretty hard into corners and I can keep the cranks spining while I do it. Not that it seems to help my average speed any  cry

It'd be fun to have an all out bent v bent race.  From having gone to other states and raced in the HPV events, I can tell you it's a great friendly competition that always had us cracking up every lap in spite of trying to beat the crap out of each other.

Does sound like fun, actually...  but let's not have big holes in the middle of the final turn like they did at Tx Tough...   Roll Eyes

My understanding that these are nice concrete subdivision roads where no houses ever got built, so should be no holes, curbs though.  I may try to cruise over there if Kevin will leak the super secret location....

I wonder how a Crank Forward bike would fare against full 'bents?

My bike tried to help me out on the last HCTT since after my run I found my rear disc caliper was loose and almost completely fell off.

forgive my ignorance but please explain what a crit is and how you get a license? What is the cost of this event and license?

A criterium is a pack race on the road.  Essentially a short loop - 1/2 mile to a mile - that you do a certain number of laps on.  Pack laps, sprints, attacks, and technical riding is de rigeur.  I've done it in a group of uprights on a corsa and it was tons of fun!

License cost depends on if you are buying a yearly pass or a one day thing.

11 turns, .8 miles, smooth concrete, no holes.  The course is not flat...and cornering skills are going to be needed.  BUT...you'll have a chance to go ride it before you sign up.

Crits are time based, so you do however many laps you can in the allotted time frame.  The officials calculate how fast you are turning laps and they start calling out 5, 4,3, 2 to go at the appropriate time.  With one to go, the bell rings and you guys sprint to be the first to the line.  I'm thinking 20 minutes for your group....at very high speeds that is quite a workout.  Trikes welcome, since they are also 'bents.  Gender neutral Smiley

Solidified the course today.  Still cannot give out the super-duper-double secret location for marketing legal and property reasons.  Can't have people out there practicing just yet.  City of {moderated} still needs to give us the OK.

A one-day license will be available, and I'll discount the recumbent division.  Might even be able to throw some of the prize money at you, or some mid race prizes (also known as 'primes').

Your upright buddy

Hmm,    Would a Recumbent class count toward USAC Cat upgrade?

If you are Cat 5, all you need to do is start 10 mass-start races (crits and RR) that meet the field size (?) and distance (10 miles) minimums.  I don't think it says anything about the type of bike.

How 'bout I just come watch? Smiley  I wouldn't keep up for 1 lap!
Anyone up for a nice easy ride afterwards?
I think daily license fee is $10 and annual is $60, at least I think that's what it was last year.

The date is July 11, but sadly I don't think I'm going to be able to squeeze a 'bent category into the schedule.  I am trying to put in a "First-timers" category.  If the Chief ref allows it, I'll open it up to any DF, 'bent or MTB that has never raced before.

Location is McKinney just to the east of the Cooper Clinic in Craig Ranch (North of 121 between Custer and Alma)

Official flyer not yet approved (or even started)
