Sebring FL 12/24 Hours Bike Race Feb 13-15 2009

interesting.  I'd think RAO would be a much toughter RAAM qual than the TTTT, but I'm obviously wrong.  I'm still going to attempt the RAAM qual.  at Sebring this spring.  Hopefully I can get the weight down and the fitness level up a bit.

Anyone else wanna go and try it?

Yes Greg I would be interested in this.  We could car pool and economize.   Feb 13th is 4.5 months away.  That is plenty of time for most anyone to prepare and get into shape.

Bud supplied the link here:  www.bikesebring.org

Its not clear how many miles we would need to roll in the 24 hour time limit to get the RAAM Qualified certification.

Now is the time to work out the logistics.  How big to you are you fellows willing to make this production?  We could post messages on the other local bike club forums.  If we get alot of interest we could rent a sleeper coach bus like and toss our bikes in the bottom.  Otherwise keeping this small and car pooling a few of us is OK with me.

I would prefer leaving on AT LEAST on Thursday early evening for arrival Friday afternoon to allow time to prep for the race.    mapquest.com says its ~18hour 1200 miles drive: www.mapquest.com map link

To get RFAAM qualified at the is event.  According to some info at the bottom of this page:  http://www.ultracycling.com/results/sebring2008.html

Qualifying Standards 18-49 50-59 60-69
Men425400375
Women400375350

I would need to do 425 miles in 24 hours.   Thats an overall average of 17.7mph.  I would need to be able to maintain a 20+ "On-Bike" average so I can earn myself some break-time.

Well at least you included the "most anyone" in there because 17.7mph! Anyone got a tow rope?

Sebring 2010!  Grin  If there is a spot available I may want to take a go at the 12 unless some miracle happens with my training.

OK, Terry -- let's inject some reality here... think about this as a reference point, before you commit to driving to freaking FLORIDA...  what was your typical average lap time and speed last weekend???

Well, I'm pretty sure he's going to have to learn to lay off the brakes downhill!   Grin

I'm going to do my best to go.  I doubt I can qualify, but heck, I'll get to hang with a lot of team bachetta people and others, and it'll be a good time.

Hear! Hear!  This course is mostly flat.   I can really make my Baron fly on level ground.

I bet you can.  All you need to do is find a way to make that bike dual 700C, and It'll practically pedal itself  Grin  I think Grumpus has a good point.  Smiley

What makes this a bit more feasible is that my folks will have a condo close to sebring and can crew for us while we're there....

700C wheels?  Greg All I really need is a bungie cord tied to your bike.  Then you can tow me around.

Hey this is sounding more do-able!  All I need is a spot on the floor.

Hey Paul, after talking about using the airport loop as a training for sebring, I thought we should take a couple weekends when there are no other rides and try and work in terms of hours:  6 hours at speed, 8, 10 12, etc.  We could work it so we only make necessary stops every 2 loops.

When we're ready for an experience clsoer to what sebring will really be, we could move the show over to the TMS.  Lots of bike clubs and solos ride there every day - especially at night.  Low traffic, 5 mile flattish loop that we could zoom around closer to the speeds we would need to use at sebring.

So, airport TT fir strength, and TMS for Sebring Simulation.  Whatdya think?

One thing about this, that didn't really occur to me before -- since this race is in February, given the recent changeover to chillier weather, it obviously raises the challenge of staying in shape for something like this OVER THE WINTER MONTHS....   Hmmmm.....

I'm already contemplating something like that, but need to coordinate with Randy as to when they're returning from MS...
