The Bike Clubs Invade Venus
Aug 26th, 2008, 10:29am

This ride, which is put on jointly by GDB and FWBA, is this coming Monday, September 1st. It starts at the Venus town square at 8:00 am. There are ride distances of 22, 40, 65, and 100 miles. You can get more info here. I am thinking about riding the 100 mile route.

Bud - I may be interested in the 100 mile route, however, on the return leg from Waxahachie it looks like the same nasty roads we took on the recent FWBA century you, Greg, Steve and I did.

Please advise.

It comes down FM875, which is the road we started back from Waxahachie on, but we turned off. As you'll recall, FM875 has chipseal, rolling hills, and a bit more traffic than I liked, but it's nothing like those rough roads we ended up on last time.

I haven't ridden the 100 mile version of this ride. That stretch of FM875 isn't exactly my favorite, but most of the route looks good. And it's not a brevet; we could even pick our own way back from Waxahachie.

I might be heading out of town for the weekend.  If not I would like to participate in the ride.  Im hoping you fellows will be worn out from weekend riding and will be planning on slower a recovery pace.  Smiley

I used my new Map Source DVD to create GPS routes for the Venus ride.

It is my first try and i am anxious to know if they work - John

I went and downloaded the GPX file.  It loaded into my BlackJack2 cell phone (running Garmin XT for smart phones).

OK I took a look at it.  It looks good as it follows the route.  The only change I might suggest is to set the way points immediately after the intersections where you turn instead of right in the middle of the intersections.  Im running  Garmin XT software on my BlackJack2 smart phone, so this change might be ONLY valid to the Garmin XT while its runing voice commands.   The software gets confused and the Voice-Lady guides you to the way point then trys to tell you to make the turn without any advance warning.     I supose this would not be an issue if I was scoping the GPS screen instead of watching the road.   If you make the way points immeiatly after the turn the Garmin XT software voice  will FIRST voice a warning to make the turn on the route then it will annouce that you are at a way point.

I dont know how the Edge GPS computer work.  I heard tht they flash there screen while approaching turns and way points.

I suggest doing an experiment on a short route around your neiborhood to see what happens with your GPS and way points.

I'm interested in joining the ride.  However I'm not sure if I will be up to 100 miles.  I'm hoping I can start the ride and decide between 100 and 65 miles when I get to the point the rides split.

Is the town square between 2nd and 3rd off Main?  The satellite view looks like there is a little park.  Where do you normally park?  To help determine how much water to carry, how far apart are the stops?

The ride starts on the south side of that square. You just park on the side of one of the streets near there. They stop every 10 to 20 miles. There are cue sheets here.
