Team "Those Fing Bents" prep thread
Aug 25th, 2008, 10:43pm

Ok y'all, team name is a go, so get your apps in.  Considering haveing some t-shirts made  with the RBENT logo and team anme on the back for team and crew.  We need to talk about a day for the team itself to get together and ride the course once more all 4 of us together, and dutie, crew, food, accommodations, and all that crazy stuff.

Sundays are bad because of the church having it's services, but either the 6th or the 13th will work for me - Mark, Paul?

Copyright the word Fing. I can just see some smart sports marketing firm using that word.

Master Paul have you made a final decision?  Are you going to do the 500 solo or ride with that team with the anti-social name?   Smiley

By the way, for general knowledge, I believe we've changed the team name to something less potentially offensive...  as in "Reclining Flyers II"...

Let's do the Cleburne practice run on the 13th, shall we?  Although I think that's the same day as the '"Patriot Pedal"...

Just talked with Scott, Mgr at Performance on Walnut Hill and 75, and he's going to donate some nutritional stuff to the TTTT cause -- I'll be getting it on Wednesday....

8AM rollout at the TTTT course this coming Saturday, like we've done before?  Or should we perhaps do it in the EVENING, to do a night riding version???  Say a 6:30PM start, with the 2nd lap and more requiring lights???

I'm going to be there in the morning with Lindsay.      You can do all the night stuff you want.     My lights still are not 100% on the bike and I"m not feeling motivated enough to fix it by then.

I think morning is better anyway.  I've got plenty of night practice by now and Mark hasn't run the course yet at all, so it'll be better for him to check it out during the day.  8am rollout sounds great, and then afterwards we can have lunch at the Purple Turnip and discuss strategy, who's bring what, etc.

Assuming wind is UNDER 30mph, this is rain or shine for me.    We're out of time for practice.

I'm taking the spoked wheel as well as the disc, depending on the wind.

Waaal, I know tha 'bents are supposed to be much more aerodynamicable, but riding the TTTT course in a 50 mph wind does NOT interest me... rain or no rain...   Although it might be interesting going down Goatneck Hill!!!!!!  Too bad we didn't arrange to go down there tonight, instead!

Additionally, the TxTough charity ride on Sunday has been postponed, to merge with Autumn In Bonham.

So, where/when should we get together for detailed discussions and plans, otherwise???  Conference Call?

Is that a Tyler forecast? Everything I see shows the rain and real wind starting around noon here. Keep in mind, Cleburne is a lot further west of the storm than you are.

I think we should bag it -- sorry, Mark, I know you need to ride the course...

We still need to meet up for some planning - how about if we meet for dinner Sunday night at 6, somewhere centralized to the four of us, say around Macarthur and 635 or 114 and Northwest Hwy?

Or depending on the rain, possibly going down there Sunday night instead, for dinner and some night riding?????

I'll be there in the morning if anyone else wants to show and see what it looks like.     Feel free to call me about 8 and I'll give a more accurate weather report.

I suspect I'll get 2-3 laps in before the weather gets real ugly.    The further west we are, the less ugly the storm will be.  Any spin-off Tornados are expected to be east of the storm, not west.

Good, glad you got a lap in...  it helps to know what hills are 'grinders" and which ones you can try to carry your speed up to the crest...  Once you're past the 15 mile point, it's mostly downhill, except for the climb just before Goatneck Hill.

Scott, the manager at Performance on Walnut Hill, donated some supplies to the RBENT TTTT efforts...  I have:
    *  Cytomax drink mix powder, orange flavor, 24 oz.
    *  Endurox Restore drink mix powder, lemonade flavor, 32 oz.
    *  GU gel, 24 pack, mixed flavors
    *  PowerBar Performance energy bar, peanut butter flavor, 12 count
    *  PowerBar Energize bars, fruit smoothie flavor, 12 count (OK, 11, I ate one...  Roll Eyes )

Since Plano Cycling has offered to do something similar, I was planning to go up there this coming week...  What other products (Or more of something on the above list) would youse participants like for me to ask for?

ell, since this weekend was a total bust, we'll have to do most of our planning here.   Peggy was *so nice* and will have a canopy for us there already.

We need to get some lists going:  things we need and thing we're bringing:

need:
camp table
peanut butter sandwich supplies
ensure for calories and protein
fruit
gallons of water
paper bowls/knives/spoons for eating and such

Bringing:
coleman stove
enough whole wheat spaghetti with turkey meat sauce for everyone
spike energy drink - strong stuff
hopefully a tent for us to crash in when we're off duty
2 camp chairs.
cooler

this is a quick off the top of my head list - what else do we need?

Individually may i suggest 2 complete changes of jerseys and shorts, sweaters, long warm pants and a jacket.  I think it'll be much cooler this year and I don't want to go into the near-shock I had last year.

I'll be posting our schedule tomorrow!

I'll have a couple of chairs,  lunch-meat, bread, a cooler,  water, the Baron for a 'backup' or backup parts for someone.     I'll probably toss in a few bike part spares, including a wheel or two.

I agree on jackets and clothing. I'll prepare for just about everything.

A first aid kit, bug spray and the such wouldn't be a bad idea.

As for the ride:
We should be warmed up and ready to roll at 47-50mins past the point of the last rider left.   I doubt we'll have many in that range, but being prepared is good.      Riding every 4 th hour worked really well for me last year.   I know there was some talk about us going to a 2 man rotation after dark,  but it won't do me much good as I won't sleep more than 2 hours at a time anyhow out there.

The one thing that I learned last year:    2 of our riders were hurting pretty bad at the end and we would have benefited by substituting a different rider.    *IF* anyone is getting weak, stomach issues, etc,  it should be mentioned so that someone stronger might consider jumping in or adjusting rotation.

I'll have a hotel room in town until Checkout time (around noon) on Saturday.  Everyone is welcome to go shower there.

Lindsay will be there to help support us Friday morning and through the day Friday, if you guys could return the favor Saturday during her 12 hour time trial, it'd be appreciated.   Most of us will be out there anyhow, so it shouldn't be a bit deal.

I've got a couple of coleman gas lanterns, for lighting purposes, and I'll be putting a tent up among the trees, with an air mattress and blankets inside.

It definitely got chilly at night last year!!!

Terrie and I have plenty of plates, plasticware, etc., so we'll bring that.

I've got a coleman stove as well, as a spare.

We should have a table set up in one of the canopies with all the nutritional stuff, water, ice, etc. all in one place, as a centralized location -- last year we were all digging through plastic bags, etc....

I'll also have the whiteboard for our RBENT logo sign....

So I get ready to go for my ride, but before that want to change the tube in my front tire.  I put on the new tube and hear a ping.  Now there's a rattle.  I figure it's just hot glue that cracked and sure enough one of the hot glue points has broken.  Still, I get paranoid and take a side off - somehow a spoke spontaneously broke.  I'm glad it happened this week and not next!

ell, since this weekend was a total bust, we'll have to do most of our planning here.

I was going to hit REI within the next few days and will see what I can get

Mixed Bag of Nuts will just jump into your thread here too Smiley
Just got through updating all the reflective tape on the Corsa, Everybody all reflective?
The 3M stuff marketed by Nathan for $2 is very effective.
I have a rear triangle and 2 blinkies to go with the dual headlights, one high and one low.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Okay I broke down and bought a truck tent, it should be here before the event so it give an alternate place to crash if needed. I'll also have a cooler, water and whatever else we need

I'm already bringing a hot chick...AND we're going to help support a solo 500 rider (female) flying in for the event, so technically I'm bringing two!  You want more than that, you're too much man for me, bub   Tongue

guys, don't forget the stuff you were planning on bringing!  I'm prepping my ist now and checking it twice.  Make sure you review the rules and especially the parts about lights, reflectivewear, etc.

The Apex Predators are jumping in here too.   I purchased my reflective tape from Plano Cycling.  They sell it for 2 bucks a foot.   But I dont know what to do with it.

you put it around your dingle and use it as a night-time dog lure.  That way I don't have to worry about the bumpus hounds at 4am,..... Grin

Terry, they want reflective stuff on "all four sides" of the bike.  So put some on the sides of your bike, and perhaps on your pedal cranks and seatstays.

For Sure man.  We got your back covered.  Those bumpus hounds no doubt remember you.  So for extra coverage you also need to douse yourself with your wife's perfume to mask your sent.   Cheesy
