I've not seen the email, but I'd be up for a team.   Although, I'm considering doing it solo on a 'bent this year.

If someone can tell me how to get faster between now and then I might be up to being an alternate if you have absolutely no other options Wink I might just head down anyhow since it is so close to me to spectate or something.

Yeah ride more and lose weight. I've done both and I just get slower  cry Edit: (started another thread on this)

I just read the e-mail and jumped here to create a post, but you beat me to it Nelson.  I've been waiting for this almost a year...

YES YES YES

Peggy - are you still available to ride with us on a 4 person mixed team on the Tejas 500?  The mixed female/male 500 mile overall record (DF, bent, etc) is something that should be fairly easy to beat as long as we don't have any major mechanical or other issues.  That record is 31 hours, and we should be able to go under 30 hours!

Let's get the teams formed now?

Greg - I hear you're riding a solo 500 to qualify for 2009 RAAM.

Hmm, start a new thread on this topic.   It's much more than a little subject.   I suspect your problem is fueling and maybe over-training.    If not that, you're just riding and not 'training'.

Fark NO I'm not doing it solo.  If I do raam it'll be on a 4-man team.  I am however going to try and get a 4-man lowracer team going.  Though I am loathe to break up the Flyers!

For those who haven't competed in the past, thus received the e-mail announcement, here it is
===============================================================

THE 2008 TEXAS TIME TRIALS

The Texas Time Trials Lives On: With your help we will once again resurrect The Texas Time Trials, to life. With a new date this year, The Tejas 500 will start on Thursday September 25th (48 hour start). We will need all the supporters, riders, sponsors and volunteers we can find to make this event a success, again. Please join in by spreading the word and helping with the list below. If you know a website or chat room that you can forward this to or post it to, that would be greatly appreciated.

Racers:  The website should be updated before mid Aug., with more updates to follow. If you are planning on doing a team, get your pick of the litter before they are gone to another team. Many think that the 4 person 500-mile "Tejas 500" is the most fun and I can see why, you get to spend three fourths of your time resting.  With a 4-person team, each person rides 125 miles with-in two days and your done! Every member of a team completing 500 miles earns a * GORGEOUS trophies (http://www.tt24tt.com/awards.php).

Volunteers:  You make the difference volunteers!  Bring out your squirt guns, fireworks, wigs & noise-makers.  With racers starting Thursday night and all races ending Saturday evening, volunteers are critical to keeping a festive and safe race.   Camping is available on-site, so bring your tent.  Except for smiling and yelling, no experience necessary, won't you join us?  Check out our cheerleaders and volunteer info!  http://www.tt24tt.com/volunteers.php  Every volunteer will receive a T-shirt with their name printed on the back, and their name will be placed on the website, but more importantly by volunteering you will become a part of something much bigger than any thing we could do on our own.

Sponsors:   We need sponsors, preferably cash sponsors, but product is great. If you know a company that would be willing to sponsor The Texas Time Trials, we will add their logo to the event T-shirts and more. Check out the sponsor page on the TTT website.

The Atmosphere:   What I love about this event is that amongst all the world class athletes, are regular riders like you and me,  Last years event brought riders from more than  a dozen different states and even another country. Let's show the world that long distance riding is alive and well in Hospitable North Texas. The Texas Time Trials has become a reunion, we get to see and talk to people that we love, but may only get to see once a year at The Time Trials. It has become  our annual pilgrimage to a place were all pitch in to keep a worthwhile tradition alive. It has become our own cycling Woodstock.

Lone Star Randonneurs:  Although this is not a Randonneuring event per say, it is the way that we the members of LoneStar Randonneurs can give a little back to rest of the world. It is due in part to Lone Star Randonneur members like Rani F., Bill F. Pam W. Don E., Rick H., Jorge R. Mark-Linda-Lauren M., Brad-Julie F., Steve-Kelly B., Carl F. Frank B., Pat N., Brenda B., DeeAnn J., Phil S., Kyl S., Shanna B. and a bunch more, that really  make it happen.  I'm counting on every member of LSR to help in some way, if possible. Any one got some fresh ideas ? Please let us know where you will fit in to this part of our "History Book".

 www.tt24tt.com

Thanks, DanD

Ray, Nelson I'm very flattered to be asked to ride with you. But I'm not in the some class as the two of you, I can promise you one thing I will give it my all and I will train very hard. I think I will still be your Achilles  heel. With all that being said if you will still have me on your team then count me in Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy.I'll start training in the morning.

What about the Flyers cry Bud your the team captain, Paul are you riding???? So does that leave Paul, Steve and Greg with out teams?

Peggy - you silly woman.  You are certainly in the same league as we are.  I'm sure I speak for Nelson when I say we've been looking forward to the opportunity to team with you since last year's TTTT.

At the moment, we still have one spot open as our team would be Peggy, Nelson and Ray.  While it would be awesome if your husband (I forgot his name)  Grin  could be on our team, I don't have any salary cap money, so he'll have to decide....

Steve - Please consider joining a team with Peggy, Nelson and myself for a 4 person, mixed TTTT Tejas 500 team.

Peggy we're going to be extra motivated just to keep up with you!  I am so excited this is going to happen!  While the solo race of any length can be a epic, the team is just FUN!  20 miles then rest/socialize for 3hrs / repeat.  Now I regret not training more, and I coulda taken the Corsa to AL for hill/mt. workouts.

Take Care,
Nelson.

There are lots of different distances and team options. You don't have to ride with a team at all. Go to the TTTT site and check out all the different posibilities.

Oh, just a reminder that " 'bents can't climb hills..."   two photos taken during last Saturday's Plano Eastside ride:

1)  At the bottom of dump hill -- I think that's Lynn, just over to the right, and Peggy's slightly behind me...

2)  At the top of dump hill -- notice Peggy essentially right up there with me, and all of the riders in the previous photo are still climbing...   Smiley

I suggest we declare a date, such as August 1st, as the deadline to individually commit to either ride solo or to a team.  After August 1st, if not committed, those people would become free agents and should not feel guilty if joining a different team from the past.  That gives everyone two weeks to decide, before becoming free agents.

Does everyone agree to this?

You can come help support the riders,  no need to be cheery, just make sure their water bottles are full and the riders REMEMBER to eat.

Like they told John Schlitter in the mountains of West Virginia in the middle of the night, when he was going down hills -- "Just keep the pedals moving, so we know you're awake!!!"   Cheesy

One interesting thing about last year's TTTT ride, was the full moon we had -- it was ALMOST light enough to ride without a headlight...  (almost)

Indeed it was, I snuck up on a couple of riders by turning my light off and talking to them.        My favorite part was seeing riders, out on course, on the side of the road taking a 'nap'.

OK Im trying to understand this motion.  (Bicycles have lots of motion)
Help me break it down.  (No we dont like broken down bikes)
You propose that folks should make decisions with the following parameters:

  •  Humans should decide their riding status: Solo or Team by an August 1st Deadline.
  •  After August 1st All Humans not already committed to a team AND have declared them self as team-able are available for assimilation into a new team of the type they choose. (Robot, Human or Combo (aka Cyborg) ).

Is this correct?   Im agreeable to this!!!  I second this Motion!

"Roberts Rules of Order" prevail even here!

I'm looking for a Team, either DF or 'bent.    IS there a category for DF& 'bent mixed? Smiley   I have a couple of soft committal DF people, but nothing firmed up yet.

I don't know that an Aug 1 "deadline" is necessary...  the event is still 8 weeks later than that. Nelson and Ray were already lobbying Peggy after last year's fun, and she seemed amenable -- although IMHO, a "mixed" team should be 2 men / 2 women   Wink     If ya wanna form up a team, form up a team!

Regarding the Flyers, Bud's already out, obviously...  I'd be happy to ride with Greg and Steve again, adding a fourth -- but for the moment, Greg is looking into a "lowboy" foursome possibility.  Personally, I still haven't decided what my involvement will be this year -- and the Flyers weren't really a whole foursome until about three weeks beforehand, last year!  I'm 99% confident, though, that my lap times won't be significantly different than last year's, without a change of steed courtesy of RANS...   Wink   However, I can definitely see Steve doing faster laps than last year!!!

One unique thing about the TTTT, is that EVERYBODY who finishes within their allotted time gets a trophy -- the SAME trophy (except for nameplate differences).  And having one year of experience with it, it's not so much the trophy that sticks with you, it's the uniquely painful yet proud memory of having done a race that 99% of the people you know would consider to be a really STUPID, IMPOSSIBLE distance to ride a bicycle!!!  Grin

Brad,

Last Year Ray and I rode on a mixed DF/bent team, we counted in the DF category.  We also mixed DF and Bent on our on individual efforts, but the other 2 guys were all DF.

Ray I don't think its possible to exert any kinda control or agreement over the proceedings, things will work out on their own accord.  All I know is we got first dibs for teaming up with Peggy!  I agree with the idea in principle that it should be 2 women and 2 men, but that can be a tall order even if we were a DF team.

I agree with Paul, the experience is the reward, and having a team to share with makes it more memorable for me.  If we get to steal Steve from the flyers that would be cool.  I expect to continue my hopefully shallow and long decline in performance!  My goal is to be as near to 1hr lap averages as possible.  I think I was just under 1:05 last year over 7 laps.

Take Care,
Nelson.

I was picking up some parts from greg last night (7/16/2008)  Greg said that he had a team consisting of himself,  Lucky Mark, Tim Wolberg and some one else whose name slipps me.  I dont know if this is final, Greg would need to do rumar control here.

Each lap is essentially 20 miles -- it's 8 miles to the right turn at the "top" of the course, about 3.5 miles across the top, and the remainder back to the start.  A team can do the laps however you feel like splitting them up -- it looks like Brad took at least one two-lap turn (1:59 is excellent time for a double, by the way!   Smiley  ).  We had three riders do 6 laps (120 miles), and one do 7 laps (140 miles), alternating through the four of us, but we flipped the order during the night to give people a chance to get a little sleep, which seemed to work pretty well.  Brenda Barnell's 3-person mixed team split things differently, 120/180/200, I think (with Brenda doing the 200).

What actually helps team riders is that there are also solo contestants out there that are doing either 200 or 500 miles -- and you're a LOT fresher than they are when you're riding your lap(s), so chances are you will catch and pass someone you see ahead of you.  Rabbits and carrots, so to speak!

Here's a version of Brad's elevation map, with certain landmarks noted:

I believe it was around Mile 9 or so where the infamous "Get that kickstand offa that bike" incident occurred...   Cheesy   and "The Glade" is the name of a retirement community off to the left of the road that is essentially where most of the climbing is complete, and some nice downhills are ahead, so "If you're at the Glade, you've got it made!"

No matter how this all works out, who ends up on what team. That everyone interested in riding  finds  a way to ride.  I did the 100 mile solo last year that is a great option, you can still help a team through there race then ride your solo race making this the best of both worlds. We have to remember that we all are friends and one of our goals is to improve the image of recumbents.

No Terry, right now the only lowracers signed up are me and Mark.  Tim Woudenburg is currently considering it, and I'm trying to get one of the Chicago or Ohio nocoms to come ride with us.

Basically I want that darned record.  I want to shatter that frigging team that beat us last year and just set a pace no one can ever hope to meet.  I'm in better shape than last year, actually, and I've figured out how to work my on-bike nutrition to avoid the sour stomach I had on my last 4 laps, which alone cost our team 10 minutes I'm sure.

So I'm hoping I can get an all-low team, but if not, I'd love to see me on the tica, Paul riding the x-tream and Steve riding the f5 700, or perhaps even my carbent - I'm sure with a 17 pound bike Steve could fly around that frigging track.

I liked the idea the Reclining Flyers used in the night last year, a nice idea.  I liked my 2 lap run in the cool of the night, but not so sure the rest of the team liked the back to back laps.  So the 2 folks alternating for 4 laps, and then the other 2 for the next 4 sounds like the way to go.  Also both Jeremy and I did the last lap together in case somebody had a mechanical the other could finish quickly, we only had a few minutes up on 4th place and it would have been a bummer to see 3rd slip away due to a flat. The other topic is start time.  The 48hr start is nice and safe, but starting after already being up all day adds to the sleep deprivation.  It might be cutting fine but the morning start is worth considering.

Take Care,
Nelson.

The team that beat you set a course record for diamond frame bikes

http://www.tt24tt.com/results/TTTT_Course_Records.pdf

They pedaled five hundred miles in. 24:24
To beat this time every lap needs to be  greater than a 20mph average (giving <1 hour laptimes).

Yup.  I had that easy.  my lap times were something like 50, 52, 55, 57, 55, and 1:03.  And I'll be a heckuva lot stronger this year.

You only have to qualify for raam if you're going solo.  Teams don't have to do so.

Rose and I have signed up as volunteers at TTTT. I would encourage those rbenters who aren't riding in TTTT to consider helping to put on the event as volunteers. As a rider last year, I certainly appreciated the work done by and encouragement gotten from all the volunteers. This is the only RAAM qualifying ultra cycling event in this part of the country, and it takes a lot of work to put it on. To learn more about volunteering, check out the volunteer page of the TTTT website. You can email Dan Driscoll to sign up as a volunteer.

I've just gotten the word from the esteemed Randy Schlitter that I may keep the XS prototype through the TTTT event...   Smiley

Now, to do the 12-hour solo or the 500 relay...   undecided

And is anyone aware of any rumblings of Bacchetta B-team ringers participating?

Paul, here is the link on the Bacchetta forum regarding TTTT.  From those who posted, it doesn't look like any Bacchetta Team riders are coming to TTTT this year:

Here is what John S. said on 8-5:
"...so there is really no way to make the TTTT this year. I'm going to miss going around that 20 mile loop!"

Paul,

You know, I was looking over the schedule.  There's time for us to also do the 6 hour race after we're done with the time trial.       If scheduled right in one's rotation, there's even time for a 6 hour recovery nap.      Go ahead, do both of them. Smiley
