Lone Star Randonneurs 160k Populaire ride Sun 7/20
Jul 15th, 2008, 1:07pm

The ride's out of duncanville and is listed as a 150k, but is in fact slightly longer, being 101.5 miles I believe.  You do not have to be a member to go on the ride.  I like the toue - goes through duncanville, cedar hill, and maypearl.  I should be there afaik.

Yeah, they called it a 163k last year, when I rode it. I may ride it Sunday. It's really not a bad route for someone's first century, other than the probability that it will be hot Sunday.

That's a tough question. It can vary a lot depending not only on what kind of speed you maintain, but also how long you spend at the control stops. Most experienced randonneurs seem to be in and out of the controls quickly, but in the heat of summer afternoons, the breaks tend to get a little longer.  As I recall, my total time last year was about 7 hours. That was a 16.7 mph average speed on the bike, and a total of one hour spent at the three control stops.

Yup - that's about right.  Once it gets screaming hot like now, I like to take a little time to cool off before the next control.  Keeps me from killing myself.

This is another "Populaire" where you don't have to be a RUSA/LSR member to participate.

So this is one long course that you need a map to know where to go ? Or is it like a 20 mile laps until you get to the desire 150k?? I look and there is no old map or new. I just trying to see what out there??

This is a ride from Duncanville to Covington and back. Riders are given a cue sheet to follow. These populaires are to let new riders try the randonneuring style of riding, but with a shorter distance, and there are usually experienced randonneurs riding with new riders to make sure they don't get lost, and complete the route, but in real randonneuring brevets, you may or may not stay with a group, and you are responsible for following the cue sheet. This ride's cue sheet can be seen here. You can find out more about randonneuring in general at the RUSA website.

Im interested in this.  What bikes are you fellows rolling?  My only real choice is the barron.  Do you think I will need my kiddie flag?

Where does the ride start?

Terry - here is the link to the Lone Star Raneonndur calendar
http://lonestarrandon.tripod.com/brevet_schedule/2008/2008_brevet_schedule.html

It has all the information you should need.  Click on the location link to see where the start is, as well as a link for the cue sheet.  I'll be on my Ti Aero, and there will be other bents there as well.  You should be fine on your Barron.

I'll be on the x-stream, and I'm sure bud will ride his corsa.  I can't imagine why you'd need a flag.  Should be a fairly flat course.

The barron is 95% ready!  I just need to mount up the fastbacks and make certian I have my spare tubes etc...

Are we riding as a group?  Other wise I might try to roll out early to get a head srtart.

if you go to mapmyride.com and do a search for duncanville.  the file you want is the one that says "LSR 163K Populaire."

Terry, randonnuering is TECHNICALLY a solo ride, but most of us tend to ride together for safety reasons, and generally things split up further into a,b,c groups so people can ride and chat.  So long as there is a group that matches your speed, you'll have no problems getting around, but you also have to be prepared to ride alone if need be.  I've only ridden alone on one LSR ride out of the 10 or 12 I've done.

Greg that sounds like a good plan.  Ride at a "Recovery Pace".  Don’t worry about having to be among slow pokes all day… mid morning after our legs are and warmed up.   We will likely find a few spots where we have a gentle wind to our backs a slight down hill grade where we cant help it but put the hammer down and burn off some testosterone and get high on endorphins!  Its sort of like surfing.  When you see a nice wave you need to rise up on that surfboard and go!

Im a known lollygagger. I will still plan on getting there early so that I can be on my bike ready to go.

Sincerely
Terry
