Essential repair kit for riding??
Jul 10th, 2008, 6:55am

Road kit?

What are the essential tools and repair consumables that you carry with you?   I'm assuming tube(s), pliers, tire levers, etc. etc.      What's a good pump or is a compressed gas cartridge better?    Recommended brands would be appreciated too.

Thanks,
Travis

I recommend  co2 and a pump. At least one of those mini pumps to put some air in the tube before applying the co2.
If you get the CO2, make sure it works. I helped a lady on a ride once. Her cartridge would not fit into the adapter. Her adapter would not fit on the tube.  I had to use mine to get her going.

I carry a lot of crap with me - 2 tubes,  a patchkit, 2 levers  including a speed lever, multitool, electrical tape, zip ties, a folding tire, and some handiwipes.

I found that multi-tools never seem to have the right tool in the right location for me to use.  So I went through the bolts and nuts of each of my bikes and bought specific tools just for that bike.  It is surprising how few allen wrenches fit almost all the bolts on a bike.  For example, my Bacchetta only uses 2 allen wrenches for almost all the bolts.  I also carry a philips/straight screwdriver combination.

For the Bacchetta I carry spare AAA bateries for my rear lights (although having multiple lights probably makes them unnessary) and a bungie cord being my commute bike and having a rack.

For the beach cruiser I carry an adjustable wrench, since it doesn't have quick release hubs.

For the trikes we also carry hand sanitizer, chapstick, toilet paper and some other nice things to have on a longer outing.

At a minimum you'd want tube/tires/patchkit/pump or co2 if you prefered. The allen wrench(s) the fits the bolts that would disable you if they loosened a few zip ties and maybe a master link for your chain in case it breaks (it weight next to nothing). Oh Cell Phone!, ID, CC, Cash?

On my giro right now
Cell phone on the stem

Organized into categorized zip lock bags:
Multi tool with torx bit (I have disc brakes)
6" of chain and a 2 master links.
Adjustable wrench
Electrical tape, Zip Ties (2 sizes), Velcro straps
Handiwipes, Latex Gloves
6 spare AAs
2 spare AAAs in case my speaker amp goes dead
A 2AA to USB charger for my phone/mp3 player
Pump (topeak road morph)
Glueless (park is the only one I have found that works well) and Glued patch kit
Folding tire
2 spare tubes for my tires
3 Tire levers
Quik Stik tire changer (jury is still out but I'm trying it)
1 spare tube in 700c (must have been carrying for my wife)
-Soon to be 20" tube for my wifes new bike
Schreader/Presta adapter in case my pump goes and I have to use a schreader.
2 fiberfix spokes

A couple fruit leathers and granola bars (save stopping at a store for a little something)
Sun Lotion, lip balm  Cool
Local maps
Few $ Cash
Credit Card
ID

On my xtracycle I carried a spare rear wheel with tire already mounted for a few weeks. I did it mostly to try to get a reaction out of my old director but somewhat because I just put a new wheel on and had been having alot of problems with heavy loads and breaking them. 100lbs+ of dog food and things like that.

Folding tires have a Kevlar or (rarely) Spectra bead material instead of the more common steel wire. This allows the tire to be folded for storage instead of having to be kept round, or twisted. Wire bead tires can be made more compact by twisting them into a figure 8 which reduces their diameter by half without damaging the tire. Having toured with both in the spare parts bag I much prefer the folding variety. Wink

In addition to most of the stuff mentioned above, I also carry a few spare spokes if I'm traveling any appreciable distance without sag.

Somebody posted a vid showing how to "fold" a tire with a wire bead. Come on, attach that vid.
