LSR Populaires on July 6, 13 and 20
Jul 1st, 2008, 6:47am

Lone Star Randonneurs is hosting the following rides this month.  These rides are called Populaires.  You do not need to be a member to participate:
July 06 - 170k - 8:00 - Plano
July 13 - 100k - 8:00 - Princeton
July 20 - 150k - 7:00 - Duncanville
http://lonestarrandon.tripod.com/brevet_schedule/2008/2008_brevet_schedule.html

Please respond to this post if you plan on participating in any of the above Populaires or plan on riding in the 7-26 200k Brevet.

I might get tempted to do the Princeton ride as it's only 100K and possibly within my distance limitations.  I think that's the date for the Peach Pedal however, so might be doing that if anyone else is going.

I'm going to do the Puttin' on the Styx permanent brevet on the 4th, but I may do the populaire on the 6th, as well.

These populaires are great for anyone wanting to try out the randonneuring style of riding. They are ridden just like brevets, but shorter distances. Brevets are not races; completing these long distances at all is the accomplishment. They do have time requirements for finishing, but you only have to finish them with less than a 10 mph average, so you don't have to be a racer type to ride them. You can learn more about randonneuring at the RUSA website.

I am very interested in the 100k on the 13th.  Since my longest ride so far has been 54 miles, this is my next distance goal.  I went to the Lone Star Randonneurs web site and down loaded the Membership and Release form.  I plan to send this in along with my $25 membership fee.  I also downloaded the cue sheet.  Here are some questions on what to expect at the event:

Is the event registration done at the event site?  Is there an additional fee for each event?  How far in advance of the event should I arrive?  I see the event starts at 8AM.  Does everyone start in mass right at 8?  How many people normally participate?

Thanks
Richard Reed

Richard,

There are no membership requirements or fees for these populaires. You'll need to sign a waiver and pick up your brevet card and cue sheet, so I usually try to arrive about half an hour before the start.

I haven't seen more than 30 people on an LSR ride, but this is a joint ride with Plano Bicycle Association, so there might be a lot more.

I won't be riding in tomorrow's LSR ride.  I rode my DF with the local shop ride, and my lower back is worse than I thought.  I doesn't hurt when I ride my bent, so lesson learned.  My DF days are over, and surgery is imminent, probably in the fall.

I do plan on riding in the 100k next Sunday.

I won't be riding tomorrow, after all. I had made my weekend plans based on Rose being out of town. Her trip got canceled, so she and I are going fishing tomorrow. Have a good ride, everyone!

I'll definitely be riding Plano tomorrow, and I think Brad Bedell is going to ride Rod's old LTX...

Brad emailed me that he is riding tomorrow.  I might have a buyer for the LTX from Brad.  I got a call from one of the guys at performance asking if they could give my number to a fellow asking about bents.  I sent him over to PCF but it appears like what he wants is basically the LTX.   So we shall see who knows..  Looks like I have an upgraded Bellandare showing up in the next month or so.
