I'll be doing the 100 miler (OK, "Beer Stop 98" miler with a three mile chaser
) again this year, but am thinking of doing it a bit differently than my first couple of years. The first year ('06) was basically just about survival and finishing in the 100+ degree temps, although I finished with an 18.5 mph average, which was my fastest century average to date. Last year, ('07), with the cooler temps, Bud and I attempted a "hammer" ride (although we split up after RS3, and I caught him again before the beer stop), and I finished with a 20.5 mph average, breaking 5 hours of "bike time"...
But for this year, there have already been discussions of holding a "recumbent paceline demo," which I think is a pretty cool idea... I'm even toying with the idea of using Terrie's Zzipper full fairing... So while we might still have a pretty fast bunch, it wouldn't be so much about trying to finish in a certain time or certain speed, as much as about
keeping a group together for the whole way, and enjoying the experience -- not unlike what some of us did at Mesquite last year.
I certainly don't see myself attempting to set any new personal speed/time goals this year, but holding a fast group together the whole way could be fun. At least to the Beer Stop!!!!! ('cause I'm stoppin'!!!)
Just throwing it out there, for those who want to try to ride at 18+ as a group the whole way...
