(Whoops, sorry, I meant to move this to a totally different area of the board, but it seems that I don't have a way to do that....   SO, onward...   PB)

That's a riding position question, I think. The less laid out you are the more you get your glutes activated. A closed up position like the P-38 will use the glutes more than high racer like the Volae. My Trashbike show bike is almost completely laid out and I had almost no glutes, but my Stratus gets lots of glute activation even as reclined as I have the seat now.

Some of it is riding position, and some of it is muscle fiber makeup, and some of it is body mechanics and muscle memory.  I thnik you can train to use other muscles, but you have to be conscious of what you're doing.  I am primarily a hamstring dominant rider, which I think also allow me to use my glutes a bit more.  It's why I used to be a good cvlimber, I think.
