TTTT general comments
Sep 19th, 2007, 4:36am

[Bikerteam posted this elsewhere, I'm moving it to a new thread - PB ]
Hi guys - In regards to TTTT I'd like to caution you.  If the weather is cool/cold at night at the start/finish area (since it's at the bottom of a valley), don't spend too much time sitting near the fire place, which is at the pavillion and close to the team exchange area.  I did that last year, and as I rode my next lap, I had so much smoke in my lungs I could hardly breath.  My lap time was around 1:15, maybe slower.

Best of luck to you all.  See you out there next week.

That's the "secret" part of our training ritual these last few weeks -- increasing our cigarette consumption from two packs a day up to four packs!!!   Ain't no chimney smoke gonna bother US!!!!!   Cheesy

If I had known about this strategy ahead of time, I would have kept the Wheezing Geezers name for our team.

I like the confidence. If you can beat 47 minutes(John Schiltter's time last year),you're a stud. 57 minutes is the best I got.

Dang - that's a tall order.  My last lap was 53:50, but I've gotten faster and better at climbing on the tica since then, with a lot more miles on the bike under my belt.  Still, I don't see myself making that kind of leap.  Sad.   I need to start fasting.  15 pounds ought do the trick Smiley

But you don't want to scarifice your strength by fasting. 53:50 is still very, very impressive. On a perfect run I might be able to get close to 56+.  I think I would have had on Tuesday had it not been fot the storng S/W wind & the S/G trucks blowing me all over the road. Also,I didn't feel like I had my normal strength(who knows why).

Don't know how much it'll help, but I'll be out there cheering on the Reclining Flyers & Mrs. Strada.  Got confirmation from Mr. Driscoll to work as a volunteer.  I'll be taking some pictures on my own too.  Good luck to all y'all!!  DJ

That's impressive, indeed...  Greg Blanks of the Assassins did a 53 last year...  Schlitter did a 47?  Yeowch!!!!!

47!  I'm not sure about that one, I think John turned in a couple of back to back 54's at the start of the 24hr solo (which is surely crazy!) but I don't think he did any 47's.  The quickest I saw on the lap times from last year was a 52:43.  But historically somebody may have gone faster.  My goal, and I think it will be plenty hard is to average 1:06 for my laps, or 18mph.  last year I don't think I made that, despite only doing the 12hr 2 man team.  I think I was just under 1:07.  I started way too fast for the later conditions, and length of the race.  This year I intend to try to hit nearer my goal time and not suffer as much fall off of speed.

my lap times last year were

1:00:18
1:02:40
1:07:03
1:13:48 (ouch)
1:10:36

we made the mistake of doing 2 lap pulls, which was a bit much.  After my first 2 laps I was a bit fried, and did not really recover.
The wind killed me on that 1:13:48 lap.  We did 1 lap each after that and called it quites with less than 15 minutes left.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Nelson,in talking with Ray Torrey during our Flower Mound ride,he mentioned Schlitter turned in a 47 minute ride last year. I don't think I mis-understood him,but I could have.

I hear ya about lap times,I don't think I could consistantly ride 56-57 minutes laps.

The fasting comment was in jest, fo course.  I'm feeling as strong as I ever have been.  Tonight I got around our hilly-arsed 32. whatever mile course in 1:28 exactly, and I was out in front the whole way.  Still had a bit left in the tank.

But I don't plan on getting crazy at the TTTT, either.   If my lap times and team times are decent, I might try it on my last lap of the day, or the next morning.  It all depends, but I'm not banking on it.

After being nothing but slow ever since I got sick in early August, I finally had a better ride this evening, doing the 31.4 mile Texas Wheels ride in 1:34, for a 20.0 mph average. That's the first time I've averaged 20 mph on this ride.

It's getting so dark at the end of this ride now, I'd already decided that tonight would be my last Texas Wheels ride of the year, so this was a great way to finish.

...and surprisingly, I was 45 seconds slower tonight riding the Velocity 26 on the GDB time trail (7.5 miles) than two months ago  (20:20 tonight vs 19:35 in July).  It may be the difference between the SXP having a fairing and the V26 not, despite the more "aero" positioning of the V26...  or maybe I just had a bad night...   lips sealed   But I still think the V26 is a better climbing machine...

Yep. Like my ride Tuesday in Cleburne vs the 1st time I rode the course with Peggy,Bud & you(Paul). I was a lillte slower Tuesday. Me thinks a lot of variables are involved.

Sorry Paul, I wasn't congratulating you a slower ride. You posted just before me.

Also I did a pretty thorough search of the past years splits and the best I saw was a lap of 51:43, so that might well be the record.
Won't see me challenging that in any way.  I'm trying for 140 miles in 7:35, and will be thrilled if I can make it.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Excellent job my friend.  My GPS showed approximately 1,000 feet of climbing, and bikely showed the same elevation.

I thought Schlitter's 2nd lap last year was under 50 minutes?  I was at the start/finish line when he came flying through in excess of 30mph and saw the clock.  Oh well, guess I was wrong.  I do remember Dan saying that Schlitter recorded the 2nd fastest lap ever.  Considering it was his 2nd lap of a 500 mile race, makes the time even more impressive.

Well, I may be out for my fastest lap attempt.  I came down with a NASTY sinus blockage Sunday after my fishing trip with Bud, and today it's moved into my lungs.   Roll Eyes  Just what I needed.

But if the mucinex-d helps clear it out y Friday, then I will make Schlitter my b!tch!

The the mucinex-d seems to be helping a bit.  Still somewhat blocked, but I can breathe a little.

Oh and I was debating about putting some reflectors on the rear wheel cover.  Any reason why I shouldn't?

I think I would recommend reflective tape instead, reflectors might be a little heavy and fly off.   Tape on wheel covers or disk wheels is VERY noticeable!  That said I have none on mine, maybe I should by some more hmm?

Email from Dan said they would have reflective tape at the start area...   And I'd agree, tape is defintely lighter than reflectors, and won't bounce off!
