TTTT course test ride - May 28
May 28th, 2007, 3:18pm

Well, it sprinkled some, enough to get the pavement wet for a little while, but we got three laps in on the TTTT course today. The five riders were myself, Greg, Terry, DJ, and our special celebrity guest upright rider, Kalleen Whitford.

The second lap, we went for time, with DJ, Greg, and I all finishing within a few feet of each other. Acording to my gps, my time for the lap was 1:00:47 for a 19.7 mph average. That's a lot closer to the less-than-an-hour time that was my goal, than I expected. I'm not sure if it was the course, or just me today, but I really seemed to struggle climbing anything. Either the hills are tougher than they look, or I was just not that strong today. It wasn't for lack of effort; my average heart rate for the lap was 173. I'm not sure how much more than that I can sustain for 20 miles.

The roads aren't that rough at all, as long as you avoid a few serious chuck holes in the middle of the lanes. Traffic wasn't bad, either, although I did have to report one road rage infested driver to the authorities.

I enjoyed riding with everyone. It was nice to meet you, DJ. If DJ ever gets around to buying clipless pedals, I'll never be able to keep him in sight. And if Terry ever figures out how to get himself up hills, I'll have the same problem with him; he really moves on the flats and downhills. With all the rain, I hadn't been on a bike since Tuesday. This ride did a great job of curing my cabin fever. Thanks, everyone.

I just woke up from my nappy-nap, so I guess I can chime in  Wink

It really was an excellent course.  I was not happy with the amount of semi traffic on such narrow two-way roads, but otherwise we were left pretty much alone most of the three laps.  It shouldn't be too tough to navigate with only two turns.   In spite of the constant uphill and the screaming headwind, I really had a good time on the loop, and was quite pleased at how fast I made the loop on the P-38.  It bodes well for when I'm riding the Tica later on.  None of the hills were steep enough that I had to get out of the middle ring, and st I could take in the big, since it's only a 48 tooth.

Rawhide lives up to his name - he was truly heading them up, moving them out, riding em in and cuting them out.  I kept expecting to see him a shiftly disappearing dot in the distance, but every darn time I hit a downhill, there he was, flying right behind me.   Im very please to start seeing more speedy bent riders.  I have visions of some insanely fast pacelines and roadie kills in our future.

Terry is gonna be speedy too as soon as he gets some hills and miles under his belt.   I was quite shocked when he put the screws to us on the third lap.

All in all a great 60 miles with some nice scenery (on a DF, no less!)

Hey, it was great to meet all y'all and check out the TTT course today.  I had a great time and it was nice to have a goal.....trying to keep up with Bud and Greg!  And Bud says he wasn't feeling all that great.  You must eat lots of roadies when you're feeling good, brother. I'm gonna have to get out on that course some more to train.  You know, toying with the idea of the 6-hour challenge.  If not, I sure want to volunteer and help out any way I can for that event.  Hopefully I can get out to Joe Pool for the Tues/Thurs rides out there sometime.
Terry, thanks for inviting Kalleen.  I know who to talk to now about helping with the TTT.

I like the course and plan on racing it this fall.  I agree with the consensus the TTTT course is recumbent friendly with no steep killer hills.  But it has some long, easy, ascents that requires someone to have something more then a fast aerodynamic bike.  Riders will need to be in good shape to make good time on this course.

I had intended to visit the Cleburne State Park after the ride, but forgot. Since there seems to be quite a bit of interest in TTTT among rbenters, I went ahead and reserved a campsite for that weekend, anyway. State Park campsites typically get booked up months ahead, and it just cost $18 to reserve a site (the $15 first night fee, and a $3 internet booking fee). If I cancel before then, it will all be refunded except $5 plus the $3 internet fee, losses I think I can handle.

I figure if we participate in TTTT, a campsite there would provide us with three nice things:
(1) A place to recharge headlight and gps batteries, without competing for a probable limited number of outlets at the New Hope Church.
(2) A more quiet place to nap between laps, for those competing on a team, and for support people who need some sleep.
(3) Showers.

I reserved for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, figuring we would want shower access after the normal checkout time, Saturday. All rbenters are welcome to share in this site, but campsites are supposed to be limited to two vehicles, so if quite a few of us are going to participate in TTTT, another of us might want to consider reserving a second campsite.

In addition to campsite fees, there is also a daily park entrance fee per vehicle, another incentive for us to shuttle back and forth to the church with a limited number of vehicles. I have an annual park entrance pass for my truck.

D00D!  U R SMART!  Grin  I knew there was a reason I hung around you!  Great thinking.  Now all we need to find is a team masseuse.  I dunno how some things work, but I'd like to see some sort of lighting on the two turns, and it might be nice if we had someone with a walkie-talkie at mile 15 to let the next rider know to get ready.  We should talk to some teams and find out how they conducted themselves and maybe avoid some pitfalls.

nevermind - I went through the rules for the race today and they preclude much of what I'd like to see.  No support staff allowed on the course or the team is DQ'd.

I think Bud has a good idea.  Because the long drive from Dallas, I will think about planning a few Friday night camping trips this summer at Cleburne State Park so people can get up and pedal the course at dark thirty before it gets too hot.

I need to find out what restrictions they have on Camping at the park.  Like how many cars and tents per campsite.  Otherwise maybe I will camp-out at the church and give a thankyou offering  in the mailbox.

Im at a point in life where an RV is starting to interest me.  Unfortunately they depreciate almost as quickly as Computers so Im hesitant.  There is a company in Austin that will do custom Dodge Sprinter conversions.

Terry, you might want to consider a used RV or pop-up, just to see if that's the direction you want to go.  Let someone else take the big hit on depreciation.  If it turns out not to your liking, you're not out much   I'm like you though, wanting to do the same thing.  With my two kids in college, a purchase like that is a few years away.  I've been working on my wife for a few years about me cycling across the USA with her driving the RV.  It'll happen one year.  DJ

Sounds like you guys had a good ride, and some fast times!  Any ideas about the team vs individual and distance combinations your interested in?  Just feeling you out, would be honored to ride with you guys.

We've decided on the 24 hour 4 man team.  I'm not going up against John Schlitter!

I thought we were leaning toward the Tejas 500 with a 4 man recumbent team. If no rbenters are doing the 500 mile race, we don't need the campsite Thursday night (the 36 hour start for the 500 mile race is 5:00 am, Friday morning).

It looks to me like we might have enough interested riders to ride in several different categories.

I was thinking that if just over an hour was my best effort, my 6th lap (as a part of a 4 man, 500 mile team), might not be too good. And the more I think about it, I was riding on 5 days rest, my bad day story doesn't wash very well, that may be as good as I get. Hopefully, I can improve a bit between now and September, though.

Im concerened about my skill-level.  I dont want to be the wet-blanket in a 4 man team.  Im looking to ride the 6hour challenge solo.  Or possibly spilt the 12 hour challenge with one other team mate so I can get off the bike every few hours.

According to the TTTT website the 6hour solo recumbent record holder for 40-50yr olds is a man named Mark Milam who in 2003 pedaled 87.29 miles which is only 14.5 mph average.  I could beat that now!    See http://www.tt24tt.com/results/TTTT_Course_Records.pdf

BTW Using John Schlitter as a bench mark, according to the 2006 TTTT spilt stats:
http://www.tt24tt.com/results/2006/FINAL_2006_24HRTT_SPLITS.xls
John blazed his first lap 54m:30s for 22mph average speed.
His slowest lap (11th lap) was 1hr:21m:57s for 14.65 average speed.
For a 24hr total of 400.2 miles at a 17.69 avg speed.
