RBENT Picnic at WRL in May
May 13th, 2007, 5:55pm

***THANKYOU*** EVERYONE FOR ATTENEDING THE PICNIC

*** CORRECTION ***  HEAD EAST TO WEST LAWTHER DRIVE NOT WEST TO WEST LAWTHER DRIVE

Official Announcement !   Spread the news!  RBENT and Friends Lazy-Day Sunday Picnic  May 20th    Starting Early AM until ??? Official Lunch @ 1:00PM  Snacks available after 11:00AM.  Open invitation, bring a friend.  This is your opportunity to invite friends who are not much into bicycling,  I will be bringing my Tandem and my old Hybrid DF bike to loan to folks.  If you’re a road-runner get to the lake early and do laps.  Mark Leuck will be there early, setting the Road Runners pace.  After lunch we can do a slow pace casual ride with all our guests.

The Location is on the west side of the lake off on W. Lawther Dr Between Fisher and Bransfield.  There is no address marker posted, but the equivalent address is 3800 W. Lawther Dr.  To get there tell people to exit 75 Central on Northwest Hwy.  Head EAST to W. Lawther Drive.  Then turn right to go south on W. Lawther Drive about 2 miles.  Turn right into the parking lot.  There is plenty of Parking here.  Base camp will be on the west end of the lot under a huge Oak Tree.  If you get lost or confused, call my cell at 469-853-4015

The format is BYOM  (Bring your own meat)  with coordinated  Pot Luck side dishes.  Most Pot lucks have way more food then folks can eat.  So its OK if you want to enjoy others hospitality, or if you want to invite friends and family and not ask them to bring anything.

Remember to bring yourself a lawn chair (bring extras for guests).  Sunscreen and any other picnic items.

We need a people to volunteer to bring one or more of the following items:
Beans&Rice -  Opus Will Bring  (Cant wait to taste them)
               Watermelon.  - TJ
Broccoli slaw -  Greg and Alexis
Dill Pickl Spears Morning Ride Snack-  Terry, Mark
Bananas for a Morning Ride Snack ride snack.  Terry, Mark
Baby Carrots, cherry tomatos and maybe Celery.  Sharon, Connie

Still Need:
Potato Salad -   Get a big tub of it from Sams
Chip and Dip -  Potato Chips preferred (potasium) Maybe get a couple hug bags of Ruffles
               Interesting (non alcoholic) beverages.
               Baked Beans
                         Ice
Other stuff is OK.  (Pasta Salad etc) Just let us know what it is.  I will modify this post with official List

We also need:
               Canopy Shelter -  Paul.
Still Need:
Grills – At least 2.  One for the keeping the beans warm, one for cooking the meat.  I have some to bring.
Colors to keep drinks cold and store ice

I will bring the following:
A banquet table – So we don’t have to worry about grabbing a picnic table
     Paper Plates and Cups.
Eating Utensils.  A pan to put cooked meat into
     Bottled Water
     Garbage bags.

Look at my list and let me know what Im missing?

You are encouraged to modify/personalize this message and forward it to Friends and Family.

If this picnic works out, we will do a bigger picnic in early June after Labor day.

Baked Beans - Opus you still good for Beans? (Cant wait to taste them)

I still got the beans and rice, not baked beans. I will probably be a little late. My church is having their annual Congregational Meeting that Sunday, and Unitarians are notorious for being long winded.

Alexis and I will be there, and she will likely be up for helping set up and watch the supplies while us morning riders go round and round.

Terry -- I assume riding begins at 9AM???  The "start time" was left off the announcement.....   I'm copying the posting to the GDB discussion board.

In addition -- one turns LEFT into the parking lot, from West Lawther...!!!!!

I was planning on bringing the Nimbus and doing a recovery speed ride with Rose following a hard Saturday ride, but.............. plans change. I'm going fishing Saturday, so I'll be there with my Corsa. With Mark setting the pace, I should have no problem getting a good workout. Let's smoke some df's, Mark!

Traditionally we ride in the morning and eat at lunch.  On this occasion we will be doing an additional social no-drop ride after lunch in the afternoon for guests who are new-again skill level 1 bicyclists.  For them, doing a ONE 9 mile loop around the lake will be a big deal.  Remember how things where for you when you got back on your bike?

If you invite anyone needs to rush down to White Rock Lake after church, tell them not to worry about bringing pot-luck food.  And to change into picnic clothes in the churches restroom.  This will work if we get enough people to volunteer on the side items.

9:00AM  OFical Start Time for morning riding.
1:00PM Lunch
2:00PM  No drop Social Ride around the lake.

To answer Paul’s Questions

9AM sounds like a good OFFICIAL start time.  We need to try and get the Canopy setup by then and have some snacks available.  People can get their earlier then 9AM if they need to put in a lot of miles or want to race the fast riders who get go to WRL early in the morning.

YES I can drop off your canopy after the event.

I have charcoal but no grill.  There is a grill at that location but I dont know if someone will reserve it.  So we need a couple of our own grills hauled in or one huge grill.  A gas grill would be really Cool! (Or Hot).  If needed we can figure out a way to haul the grill it to WRL

YES you turn left into the Lot.  Remember W Lather running along the west side of the lake.  The instructions I gave have folks driving south down W Lather.  As you see in the satellite photo it’s a left turn into the parking lot.

Hey Paul What part of the Metroplex do you live?  Also please give me your cell phone number I would like to give you a call.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pasted from the old thread:

"Terry --
Is there a grill available at the particular spot, or are we counting on someone transporting a gas grill from home?  More details are needed with regard to cooking of deceased animals...
I've got an overhead canopy that I can set up, but I would need someone who lives locally to take it down and take it with them when everything's finished, since I have to leave at 1PM.  I would pick it up either later that night or a day or so later.

Paul "

Alexis said she doesn't mind watching the canopy and such while we ride.  We'll likely be bringing broccoli slaw.

I  say we try and steal a picnic area untils omeone kicks us off!

Yes Greg, There is at least one picnic table and a grill at the location.   I just talked to Paul and he says its first-come first-serve.

Its a really nice spot right up by the lake with some HUGE shade tress.  I have never been a big fan of Picnic shelters.  They are like takeing a shower with a rain coat on.

That looks like the same lot as the Ride of Silence started from. Is it the same?

Oh, yes, I should tell y'all I can't bring the beans Sunday, I have to leave home about 1030  to get to church on time, and even if I can get to WRL by 1300 that would leave the beans and rice sitting in the back of my bike for 2 1/2 hours in the "Danger Zone" for food poisoning. Since y'all are nice to me I think I probably don't want to give any of y'all food poisoning since I can't be sure you have developed any immunity like I have. I feel real bad about not being able to hold up my end of the arraingment, but i would rather that than  make someone sick.
