I've looked at the city's website, but can't find any email addresses for the mayor and city council. I'd love to email them and tell then about all the money I spend there and that this race is the reason why. If you can help me out Kevin I'll draft a form letter that everyone could send to them and let them know how many tourists they're missing out on 3x per year.

bicycles are _allowed_ to ride on the shoulder. I'll be loving my marathon + riding in the shoulder!

Ummm....lets send a letter thanking the city for hosting the race instead of talking like they've cancelled it, which they have not.

Regarding the "we are traffic"...yes, as long as you are going no less than 10 mph under the speed limit. If you are in the non-shoulder lane at 30, and a car is waiting, you are impeding that car. This is the Denton County and City of Aubrey interpretation. And since they have sirens, guns and ticket books....its my interpretation as well Cheesy

Common sense...if there is a car behind you...move over. You guys have both common sense AND rear-view mirrors and have never been an issue. A few bad apples that act like the course is closed make for a lot of angry, vocal residents.

I'm pretty sure that the impeding traffic thing would be a bust if I took them to court, regardless of their interpretation. I am a legal vehicle, there is no minimum posted speed. Since when did having guns make you right? I can't get too upset though, the car-centric world is going to be rocked on its heels in the next few years, so I'll just keep riding my bike and organizing my life in a car-free manner and help others do the same.

All that said, I did see people not pulling over onto the shoulder, which seems like the neighborly thing to do, after all it is available, but I get plenty of people who yell at me to get off the road onto the sidewalk, or just out of there way in general so they can continue to exceed the speed limit by at least 10mph so I'm a bit sensitive on this subject.

Hmm I feel I need to make my position (which is consistent with Texas Law) a little clearer. Basically I'm doing car drivers a favor by relinquishing the traffic lane to allow them to pass, but because I'm operating my legal vehicle (bicycle) in accordance with the law regarding it I am under no compulsion to do so. The car is free to pass me as soon as it is safe to do so and in a safe manner, but because they might have to slow down before passing is safe is not a valid reason to require me to not ride in the traffic lane. Now I'm put in the uncomfortable position of having to choose to condone their incorrect and illegal interpretation (disenfranchising my rights, and not recognizing the equality of my vehicle to a car) by my participation or choosing not to participate and help my friend's race and fundraising. I'm certainly not asking Kevin to fight that battle, but they are simply wrong.

Ok just found something that relieves my dilemma a bit:

(c) The local law enforcement agencies and the sponsoring organization may agree on safety regulations governing the movement of bicycles during a competitive race or during training for a competitive race, including the permission for bicycle operators to ride abreast.

So they do have the ability to make this "interpretation" for the conditions of the race, they could not enforce it with the expectation that it would be upheld though if I were not participating in the competitive event.

Yes, we sweep the shoulder/emergency lane before each event, but I cannot gaurantee we will get everything. I look at it from the "will this object make me crash or change my line" perspective.

Dead animals go (yuck)
Rocks bigger than a golfball go
Shredded tires go
Anything else I wouldn't want to hit as a racer goes.

This takes 1-3 hours each month, depending on how much stuff there is. Pushing a broom twelve miles is part of promoting. I do have a number for TXDOT that is ging to try to get a sweeper out there a day or two beforehand.

All that said, if a truck drops a load or there is fresh roadkill between 7pm Friday and 9am Saturday, we'll just have to dodge it.
