I have an idea for a good ride
May 10th, 2007, 10:07pm

I make regular trips to visit a friend in Sherman who is a resident in a nursing home. I was thinking that it would be a good idea for a few of us to go up there and say Hello to a bunch of the residents and have lunch with them. This would be good for 2 reasons: #1 would be most of those residents never get visitors and would love to have lunch with someone besides the other residents. #2 would be to make me look more "normal", to the residents at least. If we could get a bunch of people to show up we would be heroes. Heck if we could get 4 including myself we would be heroes.

If we meet up and leave from the Parker Road station the group portion of the ride to Sherman would be about 90 miles, +/-, round trip. So, what do you say? Sound like a trip?

I'd be up for that some weekend...  need a few weeks advance planning, though, May is booked already!

I usually go there on Fridays, but for the group ride I think Saturday would be best. The home doesn't like getting visitors on Sundays, because so many of the residents have scheduled outside religious services to attend. I'll see what I can set up for early June. Last I talked to the people at Mission Oaks we could each get one of their lunches to visit with the residents during lunch time. That would require us to get there before 12:30. Leaving from Parker Road Station around 8 AM would give us 4+ hours to go 45 miles, a pace that I think almost everyone can maintain.

Oh, I should mention that I'm trying to get to the point that I can have lunch with my friend every day for a week before the RRR to HHH (we need a T-shirt for that).

How does the Saturday before Tour d' Italy sound? My friend at the nursing home is making sure we will get fed. I checked the ride on BikeRouteToaster, and it's about 91 miles and just under 2000 feet of climbing if we leave from Parker Road Station in Plano. It's not that hard a ride, just the wrinkly bits near Sherman, and that part is just a few miles in the middle of the ride right before we stop at the nursing home for lunch. We will have to spend at least a couple of hours at the nursing home with the residents, just mingle a bit and try not to make me look like I'm too crazy for riding out to visit my friend there. I was talking to the nursing home, they need to know what day and how many people we have riding up. Should I post this to the Upcoming Rides area, and see how many people want to do something nice for old people?
