White Rock Lake Bike Ride and Picnic -Input needed
May 1st, 2007, 6:13pm

Your input is needed

I tentatively would like to schedule a White Rock Bike Ride and Picnic for Saturday May 19th.  The idea here is to ride like we always do, but have a picnic as a venue to invite our friends/family/spouses who are not all that much into biking. Or haven’t been on a bike in awhile and want the opportunity to enjoy themselves.   Or maybe they just want to picnic on a fine spring day.

Please give me some feedback and let me know if this is a good idea.  No scheduling conflicts etc..   I plan on scoping out picnic sites this weekend and making an official announcement  of this event on Sunday.

How does this sound:  The riding will start around 9 and the picnic at 11:00 UNTIL ???    I plan on bringing my old Peugeot Hybrid to offer to bike-less folks who may want to do a lap around the lake.   We can fire up a grill for BYOM (Bring your own meat) I will supply some bottled water and ‘Tater Salad from Sams.

thanks,
Terry

This sounds fun....a little riding and socializing.  I haven't asked Richard if there's a ride scheduled that he may be wanting to do, but it really sounds fun.

I could bring some of my (in)famous beans and rice. Y'all want regular or extra-Cajun?

Brain damage is a strange thing, before the wreck my B&R was inedible, but my chili stew was award winning. After the wreck the beans and rice are wonderful, but nobody can eat my chili.

I don't know of anything I have to do that day, but Rose won't usually take off work on a Saturday.

Terry, what do you say about moving this to the 20th - the Sunday?  That way Rose could join us, and those of us who want to do the wildflower ride on Saturday could do that as well.  I should have the tica race ready by then!

I was about to propose getting a couple groups together to do the Richardson Wildflower Ride for that day, but I see that now after May 1st, the registration fee is $35...(!!!!!)   So, a relatively free picnic at White Rock sounds like a pleasant alternative possibility.

Terrie and I are volunteering at the Wildflower fest acoustic music venue in the Eisemann Center later that day, so we'll have to doublecheck the schedules.

Even better, since it's a century.  Provided we don't get kicked out of the TMS! Wink

Thank YOu for suggesting if it could be moved to a Sunday.  I work every Saturday..and would love to join most of the events with my husband.  Being a hairstylist...Saturdays is an extremly busy day...and find it very hard to take the day off.  Thanks Gregg for thinking about me.

I'm with Rose--I like the Sunday option so that the hammer heads can do the longer rides on Saturday and Sunday can be a lazy day.  Well at least not a 100 milie day.

Thank you so much for this worthy feed back and show of support.  I agree  Sunday would better fit this occasion of having a lazy-day-picnic.  Folks can do as many 9mile laps around the lake as they want too and hang out at the picnic.  I will go and scope out locations at White Rock this Saturday and prepare a PDF flyer we can pass  out to friends and family on Sunday.  We will have two weeks to work out the logistical details.

Saturday is also the day when the lake is crowded with marathon/distance runners -- as we've seen before.  So Sunday should be less congested.   Count me in.

Terrie can't join us, since she works a church job, but dat's de way it be...   Sad   She also hasn't even been ON the bike this year yet, due to her work and teaching schedule!

The idea here is to have BOTH a picnic and a bike ride and invite casual bicyclers and folks who just want to picnic (and see Greg’s bike)   The tentative date is Sunday Afternoon May 20th.  This is a good weekend since its a week before Memorial Day weekend.  I scoped out a locations on the Westside of WRL.  The first is midway down the lake at the 3800 block of Lawther.  Wasn’t too busy and plenty of parking.   It right up against the lake and the bike trail but has two Porta-potties for bathrooms.  The second is near the bottom of the lake  (3300 Lawther Drive) near the Boat house and has a real restroom.  This a more popular spot so parking is a little somewhat tight.  Im not looking to reserve a picnic area with a shelter, so at either location we would need to find someone that has a canopy so we can at least cover the table with the food.

We could recruit folks to get their early enough on Sunday to set up the Canopy and stake out a nice location away from the reserved picnic areas.   This will be the morning rally spot.  We will have an official lunch starting at 12:00PM with a Bicycle Show and tell at 1:00PM.  So if your out riding.  Be back by 1:00PM so that non-bicycling folks can see your recumbent.  Rather then have a pot luck,  I want to have a BYOM (bring you own meat) and have generous volunteers (Like myself) supply side dishes like Potato Salad from Costco/Sams.  This is a perfect opportunity to invite your non biking friends.  I plan on bringing my old DF Hybrid Bike for anyone who wants to ride.

What to YEE say?

Sounds good to me.  Those of us who want to ride could show up at 9am and run around and around.  I don't have a canopy to lend, but I think I have some plastic chairs.....
