Title: Rear DR cable fray
Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Mar 14th, 2017, 12:54pm

Jay posted a pic of the SRAM X-9 10-speed shifter on his Performer, where the shifter cable had frayed and broken after only about 1500 miles.

As I was swapping out rear wheels on the SprintX last night, I felt a wire poke my finger...   and lo and behold, the shifter cable on MY X-9 10-speed shifter is starting to fray, after only 1,200 miles / 4 months.  I've never had a cable break on any X9 9-speed shifter, before.

Not sure what to do to the DR to help prevent this, but I've showed pics of it to John Paulus, and will be taking it down to him later this week...

That bend is not a great design but I have gone over 5000 miles on cables with the same X9 derailleur on the Meta. I think the angle of cable entry is the critical factor.

The angle is worst in highest gear, 50/11 -- wondering if it's an issue with the installation of the DR, with the orientation angle.  Oh, well, it'll get resolved.

ICE and the SRAM rep say that this has occurred a few times, and they are investigating.  In the meantime, John replaced the cable, and took some emery cloth to the leading edge of the derailleur ramp to round it off a bit.  I'll keep an eye on it, over the next couple of months...

"...took some emery cloth to the leading edge of the derailleur ramp to round it off a bit."  That's what I did to my X-9 derailleur. Cable hasn't frayed again, but haven't really put very many miles on the bike, since.

I anticipate doing more riding over the April-July timeframe than I did over Nov-March, so we'll see how things compare...
