Title: Post/log your PRs here!
Post by aikigreg on Apr 3rd, 2015, 7:44pm

I thought we might add another ongoing thread along the lines of the Did you ride today? thread.  Everybody seems to be doing so great this year - going further, going faster, doing some fast club rides and races like Joseph and Reever.

Here is where you can post your PRs, whatever they may be, and keep track of them.  It's not about comparing yourself to anyone but YOU.  I can remember when it took all day to do a 10 mile ride and I thought, "Nobody can do that kind of miles on a bike.  I'm a stud."   [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

So most of this won't actually be PRs since I'm just now jotting them down, but it's as good a place as any to start.  This is just the data from last Tuesday's ride on the carbent.

                                 power        Speed
Peak 90 minutes:         150           18
Peak 60 minutes:         158           18.3
Peak 30 minutes:         174            18.8
Peak  2 minutes:          293           29
Peak 60 seconds:         342           30.5

1 Mile Sprint PR:  28.8 (carbent)
                         30.1 (VK2)
                     31.3 (M5 CHR)

6 hour PR:  113 miles
12 hour PR:  221.5
Century:  5 hours 5 minutes bike time - 5h7m total

Swimming:
300 yards:  6m13s

Strava PR's?

Whatever you want.  I got the idea from your hubby talking about nabbing that kom.

Wow! I guess I need to invest in a power meter. I guess all of those times are on the flats??? I don't know if I have the technology to get all of that data. I've been using map my ride, and it just tells me my time, distance, average speed and split speed every mile......along with playing my playlist as I go.

My family doesn't know it, but for my birthday I'd love to get a Garmin VIRB. Greg, what do you use to get all your data?

Title: Re: Post/log your PRs here!
Post by aikigreg on Apr 3rd, 2015, 11:25pm

Map my ride is a perfect way to get data.  You don't have to keep the same stats as me.  There are a thousand things you can count as PRs.  Distance, speed, whatever.  Hell, sometimes just getting on the bike is a PR.

I do use a power tap, combined with training peaks/wko software.  I've had it for years, and really just now figuring out how to use it.  I think a Garmin virb would be cool!

Completed another 50 and it has a MMR Course "Lakeview."  I have used this as measure of where I am with conditioning and just a way to make myself push a little harder when I was riding DFs.  It is a 2.4 mile run with one of those 'ha ha gotcha" double bump uphill finish.  Set a PR this morning on it.

MMR Lakeview course - 2.4 mi 6:57 minutes 20.97 mph average ;D

Nice!  Do you happen to have a Garmin file for the map?  I keep thinking we need to have a database of local routes for us benters.  Maybe I can put one together.

Greg - remember the rbent strava group - you can see the routes there folks are using.  We have currently have 20 members in the group, that would be a great primer for your database if you decide to do it.  I think anyone with a premium account can export them, if you need any help give me a shout as I started that group for this very purpose so folks could see where others are riding.  Your idea takes it one step further for those who don't use strava and opens it up to everyone.

Strava is a free app for both Android and iPhone.  Mapmy ride should allow you to export your ride and import it to Strava as well if anyone is interested in doing so.

Great idea, Greg.
Last summer I was sprinkling my high 17 mph laps around White Rock Lake with 18s.  Yay!  I'm back in the low to mid 17s, but at least I am riding more regularly before the my summer riding season hits at the beginning of June.
Yesterday: 59.17 miles (cumulative)

Ride 1: Errands
15.86 miles @16.5 mph
470 calories
33.7 mph max.

Ride 2: White Rock Lake (quite windy)
43.31 miles @ 16.6 (cum.)
lap 1: 17.1
lap 2: 17.7
lap 3: 16.1
lap 4: 16.3

Those look like great times to new, Key.  I dunno how anyone rides WRL with any speed.

I need to join the Strava group.

I don't know if these are PRs or not, but I'll use this as a baseline to compare any future efforts to. I rode to Clyde and back after I stopped at a convenience store for a fried apple pie, pack of little white donuts, and a gatorade. So the ride appears as two separate workouts--one uphill and then one downhill. Wind was from the south at 15mph.

For me it was that first 16 miler with Key.  He was VERY patient!  I'm still at about 12-13 MPH average no matter the bike or the conditions, so it must be the motor.  Funny on my commute this morning (finally) I was telling myself on that little hill: "If it was easy everyone would do it!"  Then I remembered the Cardiac Attack triple hills out north of McKinney...I've grown weak.  Must ride more.

My stats this morning's commute:
24 minutes
4.9 miles
11.88 average
18.95 max

First time traveling with my Axiom panniers loaded for work too.  the 700 actually 'feels' a little more stable with the extra weight back there on the rack.  Maybe just an illusion though.  UK bank holiday so only about 5 cars out the whole way @ 6:30 am.  Very nice ride.

Only three come to mind worth mentioning, all back in the 2008 "glory days" of the XStream prototype testing:

1) Clocking a team-best 51 minute-and-change lap time on the 20-mile Texas Time Trial loop (~23.5 mph avg) with the Reclining Flyers II (with Greg, Mark L, and Brad B all on lowracers), then pulling a 54-minute anchor lap (#7) at 5AM to help us break 24 hours for the 500 miles;

2) Breaking (and still holding!) the GDB 12K Time Trial record of 18:14, with a 17:51 (25 mph avg);

3) Doing the Italy 300K rando route in just under 12 hours total.

But my REAL Glory Days were apparently in 6th grade, where I set the standing long jump record of 7' 6" at South Elementary School, which apparently still holds to this day...    ;D   :D   8-)

I remember four years ago after heart and kidney cancer surgery the doctors telling me to get more cardio. I had not ridden a bike in 40 years. The first time I couldn't make it 1/2 mile at 8 mph. Yesterday on two split rides, 40 miles at 18.2 mph average. I was passed by a 20 something on a rode bike going the opposite direction. I counted to 30, then turned around, and the pursuit was on. It took me 3 miles to catch him. He told me he was trying real hard not to be caught, then when he saw how old I was, he was a little taken aback!

Phantom Rider Joe, it looks like Benttrekker Matt has thrown you a challenge!!! [smiley=pepper.gif] Are you up to it? [smiley=vrolijk_1.gif]

Jerry, I didn't realize I was throwing a challenge... it was more in jest than anything[smiley=lolk.gif]  More of a personal goal, really.  I'll tell you right now it's going to be a while before I can catch up to the speed demon that Phantom Rider is!  I may be young, but I'm not stupid enough to think I can easily beat someone who consistently rides 19+ MPH  ;)

new tires, new shorts

rode a normal 35 mile route this evening with 6 Strava PR's, a #2 best time and a 3rd best time. Averaged 19.9 according to my garmin for the entire ride, I'm still chasing that elusive 20mph avg ride.  Mind you this route only had 900' of climbing on it but it sure was fun.

Looked at strava from this weekend's race.  Even though I wasn't riding for speed - I was working solely on normalized power - I ended up with the 7th best 100 miles ever in this race.  Even ahead of Raam machine Chris Hoppo Hopkinson.  5 hours 7 minutes for the century.  I was off the bike for exactly 2 minutes the first 126 miles.

That's not an.all time best.  I've broken the 5 hour mark before once, but I'm going to call it a PR anyway.

That puts my 200k at exactly 6hr28min, which is certainly a PR.

Way to go Greg!! And I thought I was doing good with 10 miles in 32 minutes for an 18.75 average with 452 feet of climbing, a personal best! It is real good for me. I took 4 days off before yesterday and my legs felt almost young again! ;D  The end of June will be 4 years since I started back riding. I only started training in December of 2014. Even with this old body and health issues, I have gained over 4.5 mph average since December. I need to lose 20 more pounds and another year of training for holding my average for longer distances. I am going to add a body sock to the Phantom and see if that helps. I am trying to spin faster, I stay in the middle chain ring and try to spin 90-100 rpm's, sometimes faster. No more knee pain. And what a cardio workout!

That IS good.  No, great.  And if you're doing it on a phantom, that's smoking!  I feel you on the health stuff, believe me.  Spin is king.  I could have gone a bit faster if I'd been willing to let my cadence drop below 80, but I want.  My knees never hurt, not even the next day, thanks to high cadence.

Thought today's last lap may have been a P.B. for me on my trike.  Lap time 38:30 (approx.)  Dist. 10.6 mi. (conservatively)  Speed 16.4 mph.

My best Clown ride on the trike was on 06/24/14:  42.8 mi., 2:37, 16.36 mph.

I hope to keep improving my speed for longer distances. And by spinning faster instead of using a bigger gear is really helping my cardio! I'll probably will never be as fast as you or Phantom Rider, but I sure have been surprising some people. The Phantom is a lot faster with the big front fairing and long tail box. By adding a body sock I hope to pick up 1-2 more mph's. I am going to a few hpv races this summer in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, and Texas and see what the fastest bikes are. Maybe next year I'll have a new bike!

Until I met and rode with Phantom Rider, I was just a long distance tourer. I could ride 40-80 miles a day at a steady 12-13 mph pace. Now I am obsessed with speed. I have  lot more work to do!!! I found out that I need two easy days after a hard, fast day. I may never reach my goals, but it is fun trying!

https://tt24tt.com/ . I believe a certain Greg Gross and Kent Polk still holds a record there at Glen Rose! That same Greg Gross and a 4 man team also in Cleburne! I would be happy to have you as a car buddy. I'll be headed that way in September  for the Texas time trails. I think the Zenia races have been changed to this, http://www.calvinschallenge.com/ in Springfield, OH May 2nd. Ahh, I see the confusion.  Calvin's and the TTTT are really considered "ultra" races.  Hpv races are usually recumbent only and take place on a closed course such as a raceway or velodrome.  See recumbents.com.  battle mountain is the biggest hpv race of the year.

I had the single recumbent lap record too in Glen rose.  I may try getting it back this year.

I have this saved on my favorites:http://www.recumbents.com/wisil/calendar.asp . But there are others, they just include any human powered bike, recumbents, streamliners, velomobiles, and even upright wedgies! And yes, most are at a velodrome. The one near Chicago is very bumpy. I would like to see you get the record back at Glen Rose. I just hope I don't get too embarrassed Saturday trying to stay with the local fast group, all uprights. I know I can stay with them on the flats and down hills, but I am slow uphill. I really will not be embarrassed, just more motivated to kick their asses one day!!! [smiley=runover.gif]

You have improved greatly since our ride in Argyle, keep up the good work.  I to started on a Phantom and have migrated to high racers since, be patient, enjoy your ride and research everything before you drop money on the next one.  If fast is what you want there are several folks here who can help steer in that direction.

[quote author=jrob_bent link=1428108261/15#27 date=1429015819]Way to go Greg!!

[/quote]

I may never reach my goals, but it is fun trying![/quote]

You have improved greatly since our ride in Argyle, keep up the good work.  I to started on a Phantom and have migrated to high racers since, be patient, enjoy your ride and research everything before you drop money on the next one.  If fast is what you want there are several folks here who can help steer in that direction.[/quote]

Thanks Joe. Since our first meeting I have put in over 1,800 miles of training. I now realize you have to train and rest properly, not just ride miles and miles. I really love the Phantom. Best money I have spent on a bike. Instead of a new bike, I might turn the Phantom into a streamliner. I'll weigh all my options before making any plunge. Thanks for all the kind words and wisdom.

The storm was on it's way in on the return trip from tonight's easy spin with my wife - saw lightning in the distance and the wind was picking up a bit, so I thought, "Why the hell not?" and tested out the VK2 on the almost mile long flat sprint zone.  Given that I am not adjusted to the bike, still recovering, and haven't ridden much this week, I figured I'd end up stopping the sprint early.

Last time I set my PR for this route it was 28 something.  Today's new PR on the Vk2 was 30.1   [smiley=dancer.gif]  The bike was mud encrusted and the drivetrain was dry and in want of re-lubing.  So I could go much faster when trained on the bike.  We'll see what the year holds.   That was the 2nd fastest sprint of the year, but still good enough for only 39th.  Another 1 mph would be top 20.   The guy who holds the KOM is 34.0mph with an avg of 628 watts.  Yeesh.  I'm gonna need some tailwind!

I have a friend who lives in St. Peters, MO who is from Lexington. I have had a drink or two there in my younger days!

My wife just informed me that we would be back in Texas in about 3 weeks. We are going to be looking at a house on Bridgeport Lake in Runway, TX. Maybe we could get together then for a ride. Then ride again in Missouri when you go to Kentucky.

Maybe we could get together and ride the Argyle ride with Phantom Rider, Benttrekker, and others. Hey Joe, how about it in about 3 weeks. It would be a site to see several recumbents flying down Crawford Rd and Yarborough Way(Robson Rd) and back down Hilltop Rd to Country Club Rd. Maybe have a little pizza afterwards! I'll try real hard not to be the anchor.

Way to go Monkeywrangler22! [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif] I did a personal best today myself. I held 26 mph for almost 1.2 miles. I had 42 pounds in the tail box. Yes, I weighed everything! I also topped out at 50 mph down a hill that I could only get up to 46 mph before. Just as I hit 50 mph the wind moved 90% and hit me broadsided. Pushed me over the center line. Here is a link to both videos if anyone is interested.

The first one is 26 mph.

The 2nd one is 50 mph.

I am going to try for 60 mph down a 20% grade this week end! [smiley=bounce.gif]

Thanks Greg,  :)  I am faster than I was last year.  I just am whining about my surgery next week and the time I will have to be on the trainer instead of riding the roads.

Jrob, wow!  I've been at 41-42 mph on the Seavo as stoker, and I think that was my fastest.  The Encore could beat that I think at Muenster, but I don't have the legs for distance yet I think.

Title: Re: Post/log your PRs here!
Post by aikigreg on Apr 22nd, 2015, 7:58pm

It definitely could.  I've had the carbent over 50 there.  Anytime you want to test out speed without going all the way to Muenster come over here.  I've got a nice long hill where you can hit 40 without much effort.

The trainer sucks, but don't fret too much.  I basically had 2 solid months on the trainer without much outdoor time.  It's not the most fun, but get a fan and point it in your face, and nab some spin videos.  You won't lose anything.  Might even gain if you don't slack ;)

I just hope it turns out well for you and you are back riding real soon. The shoulder is the most complicated joint in the body and I found this out every time I rolled over in my sleep! I finally got smart enough to sleep on the sofa with my back to the back rest and a  big wedge of hard foam in front of me to keep me from rolling. Good luck!

Several PRS between yesterday and today.  Last night was a swimming night.  Normally I swim about 1000 meters to warm up, and do drills.  Sometimes it's more.  Then I do one work set of 300 to 500 meters are a cruise pace.  Last night I had a great swim even though I spent most of this week off the bike due to an arthritis flare up.

Today I did steady state intervals.  They are pretty taxing but I felt decent at the end of the ride so I decided to go for the sprint.  I ended up with 4 PRs.  Plus, my 60 second and 2 minute power went up quite a bit.   Every one of my speed measures went up.  But the best was my 1 mile sprint increased to 31.3.  I moved from 37th place to 13th all time, and 1st for 2015 out of 860 riders.  updated stats are below.  There;s q good rivalry going on now between the vk2 and the m5.

Went out this morning to start my hill repeats back up and to see what my fitness was doing.  For my hill repeats I find convenient local hills that have Strava segments on them that I can use as a measurement.  I'd done some hill work last season and HAD KOM's on several of them.  However a couple of them had been nabbed by the local racers, so I had a bit of a motivation to get back out there.

Since these were short hills it was all anaerobic, full gas and sheer power.  I guess spending the off season with the weights did something for my power.  I grabbed two KOM's on my morning ride, Strava link HERE (https://app.strava.com/activities/298520586).  Was about ready to  [smiley=puking.gif] after my second run at Abbey road but fortunately I didn't.

On my commute home I had the wind in my teeth for all but the last leg. Since the wind was gusting 20-25 out of the SE I took advantage of the tailwind and beat my previous KOM by 3 seconds, Strava link HERE (https://app.strava.com/activities/298857559/segments/7030383079).  I left a lot of time on the ground so to speak on that KOM as I didn't time the light properly and had to come out of a full stop.

Cool, I'm going to try to make it.[/quote]

Bring Phantom Rider and Cruzbike Chris with you and anyone else who wants to ride. This could be the start of the West Metro ride since it was rained out Sunday. I hope it is okay for me to invite everyone.

Of course.  Anyone, any speed.  It's an out and back and you can't get lost.

Have family commitments so I will be out early to ensure finishing early to keep momma happy.

Let's hope the weather is good and we have an enjoyable ride in the sunshine!

Sounds cool, but it will depend on last-minute events.

Hope you can make it. That would make four of us.

If you are interested bonzai cyclewerx has a drop and a no drop ride Saturday at 0730.  The no drop route is typically 20-30 miles and the drop usually takes on a couple different forms of 30-50 with a varying pace between 17 and 20 mph

Routes are listed on their website

Let me know if you are interested in doing this, I will probably join them since it starts early enough for me to get a good ride in and get home early.

Greg - don't mean to hijack your plan, just another option if you guys are interested...I'll let the shop know if there will be any bent riders in attendance.

No worries, Joe.  I'm just not an early riser, so I'll pass on getting up at 5am on my day off.   [smiley=laugh.gif]  But y'all feel free if you want to do the group ride.

This is the only way I can compete with you speedsters is do a ride with a 26mph tailwind and have my wife come and get me. Did 55 miles from Abilene to Haskell and averaged a little under 24mph, I think.

New PRs from yesterday's Pedal to the Medal race.  Peak 30 minutes went from 174 to 231 watts.  Peak 30 minute speed went from 20.2 to 24.    I definitely could have gone harder, but glad I didn't.

Nice day today......winds not too strong. Nice workout.....maybe not a PR for this, but a good effort and 25 miles of sustained moderate effort with high cadence and speed over 20mph.

Funny how this cadence thing works. I've always had this mental trigger--ooooh, I'm pedaling too slowly--I would look down and see I had dropped down into the 70's. Today I'd get the same feeling and I'd look down to see I was at 85RPM. I'm just trying to be like Greg......except for the torn up ass!!!!

With 30.5 miles yesterday, it is a personal record of over 2,000 miles of training and 66,000 feet of climbing for the year. Actually, it is the 1st year I have really trained. It does make a big difference. My best year of just riding, since I started riding almost 4 years ago, before June 1st was around 700 miles. I don't like riding on a trainer, so I spent some very miserable days riding in January, February, and March. A little snow, ice, a lot of cold and wind. Now that I know I can do it, my new goal for next year is 2,500 miles by June 1st.

Winds not so strong today. Rode 23 miles out into the wind to a little town called Tuscola, ate a few bananas and drank a big G2, and then headed back. I averaged 16.5mph going out into the wind and uphill. Going back.....

18 miles at 23.7mph. Felt fast.

Mitchell to Sioux Falls, South Dakota
partly cloudy, SSE wind @ 5-10, start 82, end 82
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/830246924

Today's ride was similar to yesterday's ride - flat to rolling farmland, partly cloudy skies, pleasant temperature. 74 miles done today with about 1700 ft of climbing. It was easy today. Wind was SSE again today but much lighter than yesterday's. Tomorrow we have a day off the bike so a chance to enjoy exploring Sioux Falls.

Winds around 15 mph from the south today.....did my little criterion course at the park.

Had two really slow miles to begin with and gradually upped the average to exactly 20mph at 20 miles. Woohoo!!!!!

Got several PRs week before last in Chicago.  All set in the Northbrook velodrome which is smooth concrete covered by epoxy.  Smoothest surface you will ever ride on outside of perhaps a wood velodrome.  You can really tell I am not the type of rider who has power off the line.  I was speeding up in the 1 hour race - my last lap was my fastest, unlike every racer on the velodrome.  I think had the race gone a while longer, I would have jumped several places.
200M flying start - 15.348 seconds 28.98mph
1KM 29.603 seconds - 24.96MPH
1 hour TT - 23.937MPH
40K - 1:01:38 - 24.2mph

Here's the link to everybody's results, if you want to see the crazy speeds some of these guys can do - especially the streamliners.

Okay.....this has to be in the PR category for me. After doing one of aikigreg's type of interval workouts a few days ago (7 x .6mi all out with .9mi rest interval in between) that got me as sore as I could be, I was finally able to ride at a decent pace today.....

Did 40 miles at 20.2 miles per hour on a little @1mile loop in my neighborhood. I'm really trying to keep my RPM's up. Hope it all helps at HHH.

I tired myself out this morning, but milder summer temps and light winds helped me do four longer laps, 43.6 miles, in 2:24:30, for an 18.1 mph average.  Looks like I peaked early for the Texas Time Trials.   [smiley=grin.gif]

Bob you could not have asked for much better weather Saturday at HHH.  There was basically no wind, and what little there was, tended to follow us around the course!

Two similar laps at the lake in 1:11:00 (now for 21.4 miles), 18.2 mph.  Baby steps.

On a whim, I joined in with the Airport Ride "fast group" last Saturday...  For the "Out to the Shell Station" leg, we averaged 22 mph for the 22 miles...   never did THAT before!

Two new KOM strava segments are mine, thanks to a really strong wind today. One was a 9/10 mile segment that I was able to average 30.9mph on, and another one that I am proud of was the last part of our time trial course out here--almost 2 miles--the last 1.6 miles of which were uphill--averaged 28.4mph. On the first one, the next guy is 4.6mph behind me. This Encore is wicked fast!!!
