I bought my first bent from Joe several years ago.  Can't say that we were close friends, but we did chat from time to time by private message and phone.

We had planned on doing the Tour De Cure together, but Joe had to back out due to the injuries that he had received in an accident recently.

Joe was scheduled to receive a brand new trike this weekend courtesy of ARFA of Texas.  He and I were planning on going riding as soon as he got it.  He was very excited about this.

He will be missed by the bent community.

Urbinrider, do you know any details about Joe's passing?  Was it related to his recent accident or just his physical issues that he has been living with.

Yes he was very excited about getting his new trike and Urbinrider and I had planned on going down with our trikes to ride with him on the Trinity Trail. I've contacted Jane and Greg (ARFA)--their heart goes out to Joe's family and friends.

According to Joe's oldest son, it was a respiratory issue which I wouldn't think was caused by his dislocated shoulder.  I'm  sure Urbinrider will post more as he finds out more from the family. This was quite a shock to us all.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I received the called from his son today about Joe's passing. I was totally in shock when I heard the news. I talked to him just yesterday to let him know I had picked up the TerraTrike Cruiser and sent him pictures last night. He was so excited about receiving it next week and we were so looking forward to meeting him. Joe seemed to me to be a person just so full of life no matter what. We here at ARFA were thrilled to have known him for the short time we did. Our hearts reach out to his family and friends during this time of mourning and healing.

May there be a TerraTrike in Heaven waiting for you Joe and happy Triking.

I am so sad to hear of this.  If anyone has info on his funeral or anything, let us know.  I'd like to send flowers, at least.  Joe was a funny guy, and very kind as well.

Next week, Joe was to have been the first recipient of a new trike from ARFA of Texas.  The mission of ARFA of Texas, Assistive Recumbents for All, is to assist people with different types of disabilities, disorders and/or injuries who cannot ride traditional two-wheel cycles to receive recumbent style cycles.

As I and others have stated, Joe was very excited about this opportunity to continue riding.  He was very thankful for this and had communicated his gratitude in a letter to ARFA that Jane has posted on the Easy Street Recumbents Facebook page.  (I've reposted the text of his letter below).

I am sure that ARFA will find another deserving recipient for the trike they had arranged for Joe, however, their work doesn't end with just the one trike.  I think that it would be a fitting memorial to Joe, for those that are able, to make a donation to ARFA (http://www.arfaoftexas.org/donations1.aspx)

<Joe's letter of gratitude to ARFA>
Wow. "I can't begin to tell you what your gift of a TerraTrike has meant to not only me but my sons who have constantly worried about me and my riding on 2 wheels.
The 4th of July should be for family fun as we celebrate our countries birthday. Not only was I in a great deal of pain because of my crash into a bike bridge but I had to push my long wheelbase bike abt quarter of a mile to the park road so I could be found, let me tell you you really do see stars when the sharp pain from an injury is rudely disturbed by each little bump in the road.
My boy's (Josh age 32 and Justin 28) knew I would ride again rather than rot in my Lazyboy chair. So the news that a group was out there who was able to help folks in my situation was a godsend.
They have seen me survive brain/spinal surgery I live with spinal chord damage and had to have the base of my skull carved out to relieve pressure where the skull allows the spinal cord connect to the lower part of brain. They were just little guys in 1990, when they watched me fight to walk again (not well but enough to take care of myself with just a little assistance) then just 2 years after my surgery we lost my mom to a stroke, dad passed away 3 years prior from sorted lung complications from 25 years of working for Shell Chemical Plant in Deer Park.
So, I'm not a guy who opens up a lot about my life,, but in this instance wanted you to understand just what a really big positive this event is not only in my life, gut to my sons as well. Recumbents forge an alliance between folks who have chosen to say no to despair and yes to possibilities. From now on we are part of a great loving caring group of people from all walks of life. When you see another recumbent on the road, you instantly feel a common bond with them. When you smile at strangers as you ride, you usually are treated to smiles back at you.
Here's mine
God bless you in your mission to put even more smiles on the road and witnessing positive changes in our part of the world.
Joe "

I think if folks are interested and the family ok with it, we should do a memorial ride for jman.  Maybe if diannalightning or someone knows one of his favorite routes?  And a good place to stop after to eat and chat would be good.  Maybe his sons would like to ride too?

Since he was going to ride the Trinity Trail with the new trike, that might be an acceptable choice. A ride from Benbrook up to the Stockyards perhaps?

Yes, he rode the Trinity Trails often, since he lived in the Hulen area and his primary transportation was his bent.  I have a trike I could lend to one of his sons if they needed/wanted something to ride.

Though it would be a bit further for me, it might be a good idea to start at Gateway Park off of Beach St.  A bit closer than Benbrook for any of the folks who might want to join from the Dallas direction.  The Stockyards would still be a great destination.

I don't think it had anything to do with his falling he has been battling with a condition in his spine for the last 20yrs. I also bought a bent from him that is when I meet him at River Legacy Park.

:'(  A very nice man. I met him only once when I purchased the Mach2 as shown in pix#2. He was very knowledgeable about bikes and helpful to me. I always enjoyed reading his posts. I wish I had lived close to where he rode. I am sure he was a great cycling friend to all who knew him.

Please let us know when the memorial ride will be and we would like to attend. In Joes memory I will be bringing the Cruiser for this ride. Maybe one of his sons would like to ride it in his honor.

I think for all concerned, it would work best to have the ride some time after the services at National Cemetery.  That way the family will have had at least that, taken care of, and maybe their lives will be settling down a touch.  I would like to attend, provided the chosed date & time work out. (Don't forget HotRocks ride and REd River Rally on the 11th, and HHH is the 25th.)

I would just like to suggest something -- I know Joe would appreciate my bring this up.

Joe was off the charts excited about his new Terra Trike Cruiser that he was to receive from AFRA August 8. We at ARFA were as excited as Joe. His outpouring of thanks and his testimony how receiving this trike was going to make everything better in his life just made us realize the impact AFRA can have on the lives of those who need help getting a recumbent trike to change their lives for the better.  We are so very, very heart broken to lose Joe.

ARFA depends entirely on donations to acquire  recumbent bikes and trikes so they can get them to those who nee them.  I am sure Joe would appreciate any memorials in his honor that are made to ARFA. Please visit our website at www.arfaoftexas.org.

Happy trails Joe while riding your Terra Trike up in Heaven. It was an honor to know you.

I emailed ARFA and offered them some of my TEXAS print posters that I have come out with in limited edition to sell or raffle off to make money to buy trikes for needy people.     They said they would love to have them.  I am making arrangements with ARFA to pick them up the weekend of aug 5th.  Is anybody  here connected with the newspaper as this would make a good story in memory of someone who liked bents?

Ok here is a posting from FB from Josh Martin Joe's son
Information Time and Day of funeral proceedings for my Father Joe Martin are as follows: Service Will be on Friday August 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. sharp. These services will be held at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway Dallas, TX 75211 (214) 467-3374. Anyone is welcome to attend if they desire to, but nobody needs to feel obligated. My Brother and I would love to see as
many friends and family as possible but are aware that getting out during a weekday can be difficult and we understand everybody’s circumstance is different. The ceremony should be fairly short but we will be having BBQ for lunch at our mothers House in Fort Worth Texas after the event and spending time with friends and family celebrating our Dads life and sharing stories. This will be a “Wet” party so beer will be supplied and fun shall be had, it’s what Joe would have wanted. If you can’t make it to the service anyone is still more than welcome to swing by the house to pay their respects and have a beer if they like. If anybody has any questions at all please feel free to contact Joshua Martin (817) 908-8274 or Justin (817) 204-4406

It was a very nice memorial for Joe I got to meet his family.  some were like his brother he talked about and his Ex wife. They were all very nice people.
Now lets talk about that ride in his honor.    I will post something in up coming rides but it looks like it will be Sept 1 at River Legacy Park

What about Sunday, the 9th or, if the preference is for a Saturday date, the 15th? There is the ride in Greenville on the 15th so there may be some folks with a conflict.  However, the Cowtown Classic is on the 8th and I expect there might be more folks here that will attend that one than the one in Greenville.

Patti someone else also suggested we do it at the Cow town Classic. we want to ask the boys (Joe's sons)  to be included.  so lets find out, it is in the neck of there neighborhood  and Joe was going to ride it anyway.
