Title: Bike Rack Post by jcsadowski on Dec 5th, 2007, 9:36pm I am seriously considering trading in the ole truck for something that gets better gas milage. This means I will need a rack for my bent. I would prefer some kind of trunk or hitch rack because I just know I would drive right into the garage if it was on top. I have been told that there and no trunk racks reccomended for bents. Does anyone have any suggestions? |
Title: Re: Bike Rack Post by Opus the Poet on Dec 6th, 2007, 1:35am ATOC makes trunk and hitch racks for 'bents. Draftmaster hitch racks also work well. I have transported my bike on a Draftmaster and don't hesitate to reccommend one if it fits your vehicle. Opus |

Title: Re: Bike Rack Post by Bud_Bent on Dec 6th, 2007, 2:05pm John, Refresh my memory on what bikes you have. Is it a V-Rex and a Stratus? If so, there are lots of hitch racks that will hold the V-Rex. I think the Sportworks like I have are the best. Thule bought out Sportsworks, and made their version of the rack a lot cheaper, but it's still not bad, and they're modular; you can add on or take off individual trays. Most any of the racks which use a hook and ratcheting arm do a nice job on shorter recumbents, and you don't have to remove a wheel. The recumbent specific ones which have hooks for both the front and back wheels, like I use for my Corsa, are especially nice. But none of this style are long enough for a Stratus. I modified an old Sportworks rack tray to make it long enough for Rose's Stratus, and it works pretty well, but I think the longer bikes are better off being carried lengthwise, and not crossways. The Draftmaster which has already been mentioned is the best I know of for that. |

John,I know your Giro(phantom bike)has a 46" wheelbase(same as my Strada). I'm not sure about the wheelbase of your Vision? Peggy & I have a Thule carrier. The Stradas fit fine in the carrier. It's kinda on the expensive side($300+) and the hitch was another $200, but with $3,600+ worth(2 Stradas)of bikes sitting on the carrier, I ain't cuttin' any corners. The Thule rack is rock solid. The front wheel has a "J" hook that fits over the tire. The rear wheel have a strap that goes around the rim. Very simple to use. If you want specifics on my Thule carrier, let me know. -Steve |
Title: Re: Bike Rack Post by Bud_Bent on Dec 6th, 2007, 8:10pm LOL, so I didn't remember either of his bikes correctly. They say there are 3 sure signs of old age. One is loss of memory and I forget what the other two are....... As long as the bikes' wheelbases aren't much over 50 inches, the type that Steve and I mentioned work really well. |
Title: Re: Bike Rack Post by jcsadowski on Dec 7th, 2007, 11:02am Thanks for all the help. BTW: I have three bents: 1. Suspended USS Vision - R-45 I think. 2. Vision R-65 "Saber" with twin 24" wheels. 3. Bachetta Giro26 It sounds like the thule rack would do the job. JohnS |

Title: Re: Bike Rack Post by Bud_Bent on Dec 10th, 2007, 5:59pm You can find a bolt-on hitch for just about anything, these days. I even bought one for Rose's Corolla, made to bolt onto factory holes, so no drilling. I did it just to put a hitch rack on her 40 mpg car. |
