Title: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by LukeBent on Aug 12th, 2013, 9:55am This will be my 2nd HHH after about 7 years. I recently got back into Bent Bike riding and looking forward to trying out the Baron on the 100K course. Who's joining me? |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by TonyWard on Aug 12th, 2013, 1:18pm Yep - 100k as well on my Corsa. Will be my 5th HHH. |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Bud_Bent on Aug 12th, 2013, 7:09pm This will be my 7th HHH in a row. I always do the 100 miles. I'm currently at my poorest fitness level for any HHH ride, so we'll see how it goes. |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Phantom Rider on Aug 12th, 2013, 7:56pm I'm on the fence about this, I've never been. how can it be fun with 15,000 of your closest friends trying to run over you? LSR is doing a 200k the next day over much of the same course, will be a whole lot less people and lots of free water bottles along the road. enlighten me. |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Monkeywrangler22 on Aug 13th, 2013, 7:53am I will be there on my Giro, on the 100k course. This will be my first HHH. Phantom, don't count on any free waterbottles....I plan on snagging as many as I can squirrel away on the bike! (At least the good quality ones!) |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Phantom Rider on Aug 13th, 2013, 10:49am cant say that I blame you for that. |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Patti on Aug 13th, 2013, 2:08pm My husband and I are still planning to go, IF we can finally get the move from Hell accomplished this weekend. Between unexpectedly needing to move Steve's mom to an assisted living facility (in Houston) and planning to move Kestrel to an apartment in Kansas City, August has not been pleasant. |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by jdorlon on Aug 13th, 2013, 4:34pm I'll most likely be there, riding 100 miles. If you've never done it, well, it's really something to see. It's kind of like the Woodstock of bike rides, except without the drugs and free love. |

If you've never ridden HHH, you should ride it. It's a unique experience that every rider should do at least once. The consumer bike show on Friday is worth the trip, by itself. And I don't think there's a city anywhere that supports a bike ride at the level that Wichita Falls supports HHH. |

Not likely, although they did have someone selling some recumbent-specific jerseys last year. |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by johnnybent on Aug 13th, 2013, 10:08pm I've been lucky to do every one since '91, seen a lot of changes over the years. But the people of the area always seem happy to have us. I wish the second rest was not so crowded as it had some of the best food. Then there's the guys serving the brats and playing rock around the fifty, Water melon rest stop has suffered due to the dry weather. Finally there is the unofficial it isn't really there but it is rest stop. I guess I'm in for another year. |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by JimFPU on Aug 14th, 2013, 7:35am I did this last year and it was my first time. Got left in the dust by all the bent riders from here, but no worries, I knew they would all be much faster than me and I just wanted to finish. After training for the 100K, and once we got up to a beautiful cool morning and predictions of upper 80's for the highs, after some encouragement from my fellow Lamar/RBENT folks, I went for the 100 miles (the final decision was made right at the turn for the 100K/100 miles) and completed about 91 total in like 9 hours or something like that. NEver before or since have I gone that far at one time. The 35 MPH headwind after riding all day, and the fact that I need to get back to my shared ride helped my decision to SAG the last few miles. I'd still do it again if I could but the ride from GA is too much this time. Maybe one day... For those that have never done it, do it- it sure was fun! |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Andy on Aug 14th, 2013, 8:34am My girlfriend Becky and I will be there on our Seavo Tandem. Can't wait to see all our RBENT buddies in "the cage" at the start!! Becky and Andy. P.S. You'll be missed Paul but we'll see you next year. Maybe you and Terri can bring the tandem? |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Monkeywrangler22 on Aug 14th, 2013, 8:53am Hey Andy, can Dave & I pick y'alls brains about your Seavo? We are thinking about getting back into a tandem, and it is on our list of possibles. |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Andy on Aug 15th, 2013, 6:43pm Sure, ask away! But I gotta tell you Paul Brown is the expert, he helped us set up our pedals out of phase and it made a HUGE difference in splitting the work load. Andy. :) |

Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Phantom Rider on Aug 22nd, 2013, 9:23pm I'm still on the fence, sooooo if I decide to go can someone provide some insight. Where to park since I would be driving up from fort worth. gotta register and then where is this cage i hear of anything I need to know??????? |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by JimFPU on Aug 23rd, 2013, 7:55am I can answer one of your questions...the "Cage" is at the beginning of the ride, where (at least last year) they corralled all the bents at the front of the line. 6 foot chain-link fence to give the bents separation from the DF's. It was cool to see so many bents all in one place...including a very cool custom built velomobile. I heard that guy finished the 100 miles in like 4 hours... |

Park wherever you can find - seriously. And get there early - I usually get there at least an hour before the start making my arrival before 6am. It gives you plenty of time to find your spot at the starting line. The "cage" seems to fill up fast. I'm headed to WF here in a couple of hours - hope to see a lot of RBENTers there! |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Monkeywrangler22 on Aug 23rd, 2013, 9:03am I'm heading out around noon for WF. I'll be staying at First Christian Church on Taft. Long ways from the start so I will be driving in, Sat. morning to hunt up a parking spot in the big lot. Probably around 05:30.... blech! |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by LightningPilot on Aug 23rd, 2013, 12:44pm Warren had his best week on the bike since his Collin County Classic broken collar bone so he left at noon. There is always plenty of parking at the edges of the HOJO parking lot. It's a couple of blocks from the start with very little traffic. |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Bud_Bent on Aug 23rd, 2013, 7:33pm Lots of spaces here at Lamar if anyone wants to come late. |
Title: Re: HHH, Hotter than Hell 100, Aug 24 Post by Phantom Rider on Aug 23rd, 2013, 8:56pm you folks have fun, I'm going to ride a 200k with the LSR group in the morning. may the wind be at your back and your bent grin so wide that folks wonder what you've been up to. |
