Prayers go out to both families involved here, very sad situation and goes to further educate all of us that lights and reflective materials are REQUIRED.

AMEN!!
You know, sometimes it isn't the driver's fault.  ...not even reflectors?!!! Wearing dark clothing at NIGHT?!!  Come on.
This is a tragedy and is still worth our prayers for God's peace to pervade all loved ones involved.  To those not associated, and ride, take note.  After the bike's purchase, the very next thing you need to do is to get lights, not only to be seen at night, but to flash during the day.  Eyes are cast askance sometimes when they see my luminary artillery, but one thing's for sure, brightest day or darkest night, they ALL know I'm there.
Okay, I'm off my soapbox.

Riding without lights and/or reflectors is not  the way to lead a long healthy life. The closest I've ever come to hitting a cyclist was a group of LDS missionary kids, riding their bikes after dark, during the winter. They all had dark bikes, black shoes, black pants, and were all wearing those long, black duster-type coats that hung down over the seats, covering any light or reflector that should have been there. None had visible lights, none had visible reflectors and none wore a helmet. The only reason I spotted them was by their silhouettes against some lights farther up the road and I only got a glimpse. Had I looked elsewhere at that moment, such as my rear-view mirror, I would never have seen them.

It has always been a sore spot that RBM put no reflectors on my trike.

I've had to give out tail lights to youngsters visiting here on their bikes until after dark.  I still don't know why they think their luminous personalities will show in the dark!

Yes, during my years of pre-dawn commuting by bike, I was amazed at how many riders wore dark clothes and had no lights. When you combine that with all the drivers who have bad night vision, it's not good.

This reminds me of coming home from a nighttime cycling trip of 30 miles or so.  I was at my home's intersection.  I stopped at the sign, and thought I was the only one at there.  I was nearly across, when from the right a shadow was moving quickly in a collision course.  If I didn't jam on my brakes, I definitely would have hit him.  He MUST have seen me, I am Alpha Centauri moving down the street at night.   [smiley=shrug.gif]
