Title: Odd Theft Update Post by Patti on Jul 8th, 2013, 9:06pm Someone came into our garage last night and stole my helmet, with my gloves and sun glasses sitting in it. Trikes, bikes, power tools, camping gear, mower, and everything else (as best I can tell - we have a LOT of junk) are all in place. I found out late this afternoon that my neighbor diagonally across the alley had his shed broken into and pilfered last night as well. The most annoying aspect of this is that they dropped one, but ONLY one, of my gloves. So now I'm back to having just one of this pair. My cat had hidden the same one, about 6 months back, and I finally found it two weeks ago. Anyone have any creative uses for a single glove? Well, on closer inspection, we seem to have lost our two DF bikes to the prowlers: a 5 year old Novara Hybrid bike (midnight blue) and an 18 year old Schwinn Mountain bike (red). Sad to say that we were so happy they didn't take one of the bents that it took us a while to reaize the other two were missing. Doubtful I can find serial numbers but if anyone spots them on Craigslist, let me know. I might buy them back. |
Title: Re: Odd Theft Update Post by rmillay on Jul 9th, 2013, 6:46pm Sorry to hear that, Patti. We've had several shed and garage break-ins around here the last couple of weeks. |
Title: Re: Odd Theft Update Post by shellbear on Jul 9th, 2013, 9:15pm That is so weird! At least they didn't get your 'bents. |
Title: Re: Odd Theft Update Post by Action Lad on Jul 9th, 2013, 11:04pm It would be hard for me to forget the feeling of being violated. Sorry to hear this, but oh what a relief that the bents weren't taken. ...might be a sign of how weird and undesirable society still thinks they are. |
Title: Re: Odd Theft Update Post by Monkeywrangler22 on Jul 10th, 2013, 10:44am Based on rmillay's recent experience with bike thieves, I suggest a repeated combing of the area pawn shops along with Craigslist. Most likely pawn shops though I bet. File the police report too, and keep after everybody involved, to hunt down the thieves and your property. Got any older pictures of the stolen bikes? |
Title: Re: Odd Theft Update Post by Patti on Jul 10th, 2013, 1:50pm I did file a police report but can't find serial numbers on the bikes. I have them but they are lost somewhere in the files of death. After you own a bike for 18 years, you don't think too much about the warranty paperwork anymore. I guess I should be more upset but am really just grateful they didn't have the sense to take the important stuff. Of course, I HAD just made a lovely new visor extension for my helmet. Ordered a new helmet yesterday and will have the extension made for it before it gets here. I'm sure I'll like it better than the old one, anyway. I know we have pictures of the bikes because Steve and Kestrel rode them in Waco for two years for the Skittles Ride and they also rode them at the HOT Rallies those same years. I'll see if I can scrounge them up. |
Title: Re: Odd Theft Update Post by texpug on Jul 10th, 2013, 1:53pm Scary, scary scary. I keep 2 Catrike Speeds, 2 Catrike 700's, and a Terra Trike Tandem Pro IN MY HOUSE. I couldn't sleep otherwise. I just need to install an elevator so I can get MORE trikes in the house :) But Patti I am just SICK for y'all. But at the same time -- S GRATEFUL they did not get your bents!!!! |
Title: Re: Odd Theft Update Post by johnnybent on Jul 10th, 2013, 3:49pm And now for the bad news. They will return. It happened to me; Luckily the newly installed alarm ran them off. I am not a fan of all the lawn crews, contractors, or junk guys that run around the town. They see too much. Years ago Richardson had a big problem with BMX thefts. local kids stealing from their neighbors and selling off the parts. Just keep the ears and eyes open, they may just ride past you. |
Title: Re: Odd Theft Update Post by Patti on Jul 10th, 2013, 4:53pm Yes, fully expect they might come back. We made some "modifications" to our garage for better security. I fully expected they might come back the next night and considered leaving the gate unlocked and sitting in the yard, with a shotgun. New locks, several motion sensors and a new backyard light made me rethink that. Good thing this happened while Rowan was at camp as I would never been able to dissuade him from waiting up for them. He has a ghillie suit he has been dying to try out. He'll probably want to set booby traps after he gets home. I should never have let him watch "Home Alone". I had an old bike stolen off the porch years ago. A few weeks later, a guy rode it right past me on my street. Still had my old lock wrapped around the seat post. |
Title: Re: Odd Theft Update Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Jul 13th, 2013, 6:54pm Had to have been kids finding an opportunity, and the recumbents weren't taken because they had no idea of how to ride one.... and may have realized they are too unique to blend in... |
