Title: Ride The Link June 1 Post by Action Lad on May 22nd, 2013, 9:53pm ...a Saturday event to celebrate the linking up Oak Cliff, the Katy and Santa Fe Trails. Hmm, does this mean that instead of the Santa Fe trail going to a dead end, they actually, have a bridge in place? Well, check out the post in DORBA's website. http://www.dorba.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3525&view=unread#unread |
Title: Re: Ride The Link June 1 Post by Action Lad on May 22nd, 2013, 10:07pm Well, I guess it means that there are sharrows or something to lead from the end of one, to the beginning of another, judging by what the looks of the map: http://www.dart.org/images/bikes/ridethelinkbikemap.pdf |
Title: Re: Ride The Link June 1 Post by Patti on May 23rd, 2013, 2:50pm OH, duh. I read Santa Fe Trail but was thinking Santa Fe Trestle Trail instead. I thought maybe I'd missed a development on it. Yeah, I just love that dead-end on the Santa Fe where they make you climb the two bridges before you have to stop and either carry your bike or ride it through the rocks, broken glass and goatheads to get back to the street. Doable if you are a Dorba member on a mountain bike but not great for recumbents and road bikes. Even better than that one, though, is the end of the Santa fe Trestle Trail. The SFTT one goes from Oak Cliff, by the Corinth Street DART station, across the river to downtown. The ride is really very scenic but when you get to the downtown side, you have to ride or walk through some of the gnarliest railroad ballast plus climb over the levee to try to connect to Riverfront Drive (right next to the old Longhorn Ballroom) and back to Corinth Street. If you want to go from there on into downtown, riding can be very dicey because of speeding traffic, blind corners and tunnels. |
Title: Re: Ride The Link June 1 Post by rmillay on May 23rd, 2013, 5:33pm That's why, when Patti or I want to go downtown, we use the Jefferson St. viaduct, which now has a separated bike lane on it. You can tell it's a bike lane by all the debris on it. A huge puddle can stay on it for two days after a good storm. It's nice the city is looking out for us! [smiley=wink.gif] |

Actually, I prefer the Large Marge (Margaret Hunt Hill) to get into downtown, but the bike lane on the viaduct DOES make it easier to ride during rush hour without having someone yell something obnoxious at me. By the way, we rode it yesterday and not only had to negotiate broken glass but nails that someone had dumped out. Interestingly, I didn't see any of them in the traffic lanes. |
Title: Re: Ride The Link June 1 Post by artcat on May 24th, 2013, 4:23pm The last time I got on the Santa Fe Trail (at the dead end) They had improved the get on get off area and we went smoothly from road to trail on asphalt. You still have to go uphill though. Easily doable on my Bachetta. That was about 2 or 3 weeks ago. |
Title: Re: Ride The Link June 1 Post by rmillay on May 24th, 2013, 4:24pm I've often contemplated a broom attachment on my trike... [smiley=chinscratch.gif] |
