I have updated and redesigned my Itasca Disasta route into a 200k permanent, and I plan on riding it on Saturday morning, if anyone wants to join me in Midlothian. Email me for start time and exact starting location. A RUSA membership is required.

The route now starts in Midlothian, rather than the traffic heavy Lynn Creek Marina. It still goes out to Itasca for the second control, going up Orphan Hill in the opposite direction from other routes. It no longer uses the rough FM 934, taking a better route to US 77, then going on to Italy, then on to the next control at Rice.

With the new Rice control, I considered changing the route's name to Rice-a-Roadie, but decided to stick with Itasca Disasta. From Rice, the route heads back to Midlothian. The route can be viewed (or loaded onto a gps) here: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2369862

That sounds NICE!  I am committed to riding in Muenster with Alexis - we are determined to keep her from sagging at the "mailbox of shame" as she puts it.  It's one of her few real goals this year.  Next weekend is possibly the shiner ride, but if that falls through and you're up for another 200, I'd gladly tag along.  Or May 18th.

I'll be in DC next weekend. That's why I want a 200k this weekend.

I'll have to take a rain check, so to speak...  my daughter has asked me to help out at the Arlington dinosaur excavation - also known as the Arlington Archosaur site -- for the day.  I'll get my miles in to Shiner next weekend, instead!

I'd forgotten about Paul leaving a part of himself, several times, on that route.  :)

Paul, is your daughter an archaeologist?

That's pretty cool, Paul. I hadn't heard of that excavation. I recently found a large piece of an ammonite fossil on a fishing trip to Benbrook, and that little 80,000,000 year old fossil has me thinking of adding another hobby.

Yes, she graduated from UNTx a few months ago - show her a fossil, she can tell you what it is... (and no, I don't consider myself a fossil)  Not sure what kinda paying job she's going to hopefully wind up with, but for now she's continuing to work with the AAS dig, and possibly volunteer at the Perot.

That is cool :) Below the dam at Benbrook has always been good, as well as several of the hill cuts on county roads above Rough Creek near Glen Rose and below Chalk Mountain. Five inch rains= bonanza.

I've heard that before, about the Benbrook spillway. I found my ammonite segment in the roots of a fallen tree in a creek on the upper end of the lake. The next time the lake gets really low, I may have to dig and look for the rest of that ammonite. It would be a big one. I may have to get better directions on those other spots.

I poke around the Glen Rose area every two or three years, usually going to or from the Leakey Death Ride or when I visit my beagle breeder friend. I need to locate both spots and save them on my Nuvi instead of thrashing around each time trying to find the right county road, although that's half the fun.
