Title: First ride around the 'hood on our new tandem
Post by texpug on Mar 8th, 2013, 5:27pm

Okay, maiden voyage around the 'hood on Deuce, my new Terra Trike Tandem Pro.

Weak Knees Knight has MAJOR work to do on her knees in the next 2 weeks. YIKES.

Had to adjust a LOT of stuff -- seat distance, seat angle. Put the seat back as far as it would recline -- miss that 700 angle. But when the seat angle went back, had to re adjust Sweet P's rack. Done.

First impressions: that thing runs a lot better than I thought it would on Marathons. The tire diva does NOT like Marathons. Rolls a LOT better than I was expecting. We have not ridden for MONTHS AND  MONTHS, and probably averaged about 12-13  mph. Hmmm.. TOO LOW GEARING. May have to deal with this issue as our riding improves.

Very comfortable to ride. Easier than riding solo. Every kid in the country is SO JEALOUS. Add a Pug riding on back, and we could probably sell posters to the kids.

Overall, very pleased and frankly, surprised, at how well it rolls. HOWEVER, I would only have one with independent pedaling. Greg and I do NOT pedal alike!

I was thinking that this would be just a lazy ride, but I can see it has the potential to have much more kick than just an 8 mph pedal around the block a couple of times. Deuce (what we named him) is definitely going to be a permanent member of the family!

I know you all were to cool for words.  How do you tansport it, and how well do the SS couplers work.  Congrats.

Hi Jane!

I am so glad you love your new trike tandem so much!  Becky and I were checking it out at the HOT rally and just LOVED the color!!!  You and Greg have a wonderful time!!.

Jane, glad you guys got it tuned up and running so good.  Gay was planning on riding with you at Ataxia but now is not sure if she can keep up with you on the 700.

Gay will ride circles around us, trust  me on that one! but at least we are not as slow as I was fearing!

Haven't figured out how to transport it yet. Our son had to leave his Forester for repairs (he was nearly killed in a wreck on Interstate 10 in outsiana and that Forester saved his life. should have been totaled, but insurance insisted on fixing it. This is going to be the most expensive repair they ever have. They already are at the same point they would have been it financially if they had totaled it. And my son was 0% negligent, so he is determined to have a car that works right. He is an attorney too.) and took our Honda Odyssey back. So haven't been able to play with getting it in the van yet. Say prayers it will go. Otherwise, we'll be on the 700 and Pugtrike at RAD.

I need to find some bags for the tandem like the Catrike bags. I feel naked without having the "necessities (cochlear implant batteries, arm and leg coolers, etc) with me!

I wish Karen and I could afford a tandem right now.  We tried yours out at the HOT and loved it even though we didn't ride for more than a few minutes.

Oh well, we'll just have to put it into the budget planning for next year.

Very nice choice -- I can see having something like this sometime down the road...

Jane, there was a very good thread over at BROL about adapting Outward Hound bags for trike use as side pod bags. Unfortunately, the thread got deleted so I cannot post a link.  Outward Hound bags are packs that people buy for their dogs to carry gear. They come in a variety of colors and adapt well for triking purposes. The original poster was using both the large and extra large size to convert to trike side pods.  Here are a couple of links.

This one is a picture of "official ICE Radical Side Pods", just to illustrate what they look like:
http://www.calhouncycle.com/productcart/pc/ICE-Side-Pod-Panniers-p1542.htm

And this one is to the Outward Hound website page showing the dog packs:
http://www.myoutwardhound.com/backpacks-for-dogs-dog-backpacks.html

If you know someone who sews (and I believe you do) the packs can be separated and turned into really cool side pods. IF the thread gets re-posted on BROL, I'll send you the link. In the meantime, I'll send the original poster a request for the pictures. The bags looked great and were less than half the cost of  the ICE bags.

Jane, the Wands are just able to get their Tandem Pro into their Odyssey if they deflate the rear tire.

Wow thanks for that tip Robert! I wish we could talk to the Wands.

Kenny definitely put the Tandem Pro IPS on your must have list.  It is quality time spent together riding on the same trike. What's neat is that I have a listening system that allows me to hear everything Greg says (and still listen to my MP3 player!) when we ride. Makes for a great time spent riding together.  And Paul, you don't have to be geriatric to ride a tandem! :)  We don't "need" to ride together, but WANT to! :)

Patti will check out Outward Hound.. Sweet )P has a LOT of that stuff! Thanks for the tip.

Jane,
I am 5'10" and my wife Mattie is 5'2" to give some idea the length of our tandem. Yes it will go in our 2002 Odyssey with the rear tire
deflated and press up against the dash.
