Title: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, 9AM Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Mar 7th, 2013, 12:59pm [NOTE 3/11 -- if there are strong south winds, I recommend we only do the 24 mile route...] Let's gather in Lancaster, Saturday the 16th... the longterm weather forecast looks good right now. Anybody interested in meeting at John's Bicycles in Lancaster, and riding either the 24-mile GDB Rally route, down to Ferris around and back, or a 40-mile version that avoids the hills northwest of Palmer, followed by lunch for each group? The concept is to all ride together in a no-drop, moderate pace down to Ferris, then the two distance/speed groups can split up there. We probably wouldn't necessarily meet up again afterwards, because it'll take at least an hour plus more for the longer distance group to get back -- so each group could go to the cafe next to John's shop, after they return. And maybe even throw some dough John's way, in support of his shop! Rollout will be at 9AM -- which is the same time as John's regular "very casual" group, so we may get some joiners from his regulars... The short distance group should be back by 11ish, and the longer group sometime after 12. Note that the longer distance has some significant climbing along Sugar Ridge Rd... and if it's a strong south wind, you get a headwind going down 660, but a tailwind in the 2nd half. Here's the 24-mile route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2208161 Here's the 40-mile route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2208111 Please indicate your interest in either distance, so we can get a feel for who's doing what... Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by Monkeywrangler22 on Mar 7th, 2013, 2:25pm I will see if Dave is interested in the 40 miler. He might enjoy some training before the Ataxia ride in 2 weeks! |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by Patti on Mar 7th, 2013, 6:18pm Sounds like fun. I'd be up for the shorter distance and if there aren't enough others interested, I'll just join up with the casual group from the shop. I haven't been riding much lately and as much as I enjoy that longer ride, I know I can't keep up with bikes. :) |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Mar 9th, 2013, 3:53pm I'm thinking Terrie and I will be on the Seavo tandem, so we'll be doing the 25... You won't be alone!!! |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by Patti on Mar 10th, 2013, 10:59am HAHAHAHAHA! I can see me trying to keep up with a tandem. Yes, I WILL be alone ;D Maybe I'll need to bring a bike instead... |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by jayg on Mar 10th, 2013, 11:32am Will there be any rest stops, or will the two routes be suited only for those with iron bladders? Older riders with inquiring minds want to know. :) |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Mar 10th, 2013, 2:52pm There are gas stations in Ferris (Mile 9), Palmer (Mile 24), and about 5 miles from the finish, as well as the bathroom in the back of John's shop... |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by jayg on Mar 10th, 2013, 6:42pm Thanks, Paul. Will be riding one of the routes. Need to check with fellow Clowns that might ride to see what route they want to take. |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Mar 11th, 2013, 8:09am Wind forecast at the moment is for strong south winds and gusts... if so, I would suggest we only do the 24 mile route!!! Terrie cannot make it, so I'll be on the Xstream, FWIW. |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by Action Lad on Mar 11th, 2013, 1:18pm Paul, what do you suppose might be the average speed of the 40 mile gang? |

That's always a fun thing to try to guesstimate... I would think maybe 14mph overall, considering the wind and the hills... and if it's too windy, there might not even BE a 42 mile group... |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by artcat on Mar 11th, 2013, 5:10pm I'm thinking about it. 24 if it's very windy. Not at all if it's very cold. You know I'm a weather wimp. |

NOAA forecast -- definitely not "very cold"! http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae256/pbrown8js/satmar16.jpg |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by aikigreg on Mar 12th, 2013, 9:03pm Well, Alexis and I would like to come do the 40 miler, but not if we're going to be the only ones doing it. |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by Bud_Bent on Mar 12th, 2013, 10:18pm I'll be doing a 200k out of Italy. Y'all have fun. Love that wind... |

At least south winds make the 2nd half of Italy a lot more pleasant!!! |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Mar 13th, 2013, 9:26am For those skeered of being able to keep up on the 24 miler, there will be the usual "John's Bicycles" group ride rolling out at the same time, which is a more casual pace, for about 18 miles... Greg, if there are plenty doing the 24, I could also switch to the 40 once we get to Ferris... and Jay was also interested in the 40... The GDB gang is also riding out from the town square at the same time, to do the full 42 and 62 mile routes. So, there are all KINDS of choices for Lancaster group riding on Saturday!!! C'mon down!!!! PB |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by shellbear on Mar 13th, 2013, 8:48pm I'm in! I'm probably more up for the 24 than the 40 unless the 40 sticks to that 14mph average. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by aikigreg on Mar 13th, 2013, 9:39pm Shellbear that's pretty much exactly Alexis' average, so there won't be a choice in the matter. But unless there are several people doing the 40 from the Rbent group, there's just no use driving all the way over there. We can ride by ourselves any day of the week. |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Mar 14th, 2013, 7:41am Shelly, plan on the 40... |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by aikigreg on Mar 14th, 2013, 9:02pm Well, last call - who's doing the 40 besides my wife and I? |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by shellbear on Mar 14th, 2013, 10:27pm Sure, I'll be glad to do the 40, assuming my compadres know the route! I do not know Lancaster well but will study the route anyway. I just don't want to get lost. :) |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Mar 15th, 2013, 7:21am Jay also indicated doing the 40, at Barbecs yesterday. I can also, assuming another 24mile leader can step up. Again, we're all riding together down to Ferris, then splitting there. There are at least two eatery options right there next to John's shop, for after the ride. However, I imagine that it'll take at least another hour and a half longer before the 40-mile group gets back, so there's not really much socialization opportunity afterwards for the whole group... |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by rmillay on Mar 15th, 2013, 11:50am LSR's Saturday 100 blew up, so this looks like a good ride for the trike. If there is enough interest in the 40, I'll do that, otherwise the 25. More recent NOAA forecast shows low 70's by noon, but even windier (trike and low racer conditions)! [smiley=runover.gif] |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by jcsadowski on Mar 15th, 2013, 8:03pm I plan on doing the 40 and I have the track in my GPS so I wont get lost when I ride too slow. |

John, let's get a 10 mph pace line going into that predicted 17 mph southerly headwind. :D |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by Patti on Mar 15th, 2013, 8:42pm I won't be able to make it to Lancaster after all. I'm going to spend the day with my little girl who is home from school. Y'all have a great day! |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by Tiger_Mike on Mar 15th, 2013, 8:51pm I'll be there for the 24 miler |
Title: Re: RBENT Lancaster 24/40 gathering, Sat Mar 16th, Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Mar 15th, 2013, 9:28pm I'll have 5 copies of the maps and cue sheets for both routes. Note that the 42-miler is detouring at Palmer, NOT going past the hilly section with the Wild Animal Farm... You're turning right on 813W, just after Palmer. |
