Title: Oak Cliff Mardi Gras parade
Post by Opus the Poet on Feb 10th, 2013, 10:32pm

Had an "interesting" ride to the parade this afternoon as I forgot my directions from Google Maps when I left the house and go a few "bonus miles" looking for the form-up for the parade. In order to get there in plenty of time I left from church and skipped lunch, not a good idea as my memory goes to pot when I'm hungry. I could remember I was supposed to follow 8th to Davis and move over one block but I forgot the name of the street I was supposed to switch to after the intersection of 8th and Davis, so I spent about an hour riding south of Davis in Oak Cliff looking for the parade form up line. I eventually found it and was the first person to show up at the BFOC spot in the lineup. I was posing for pictures all afternoon long, almost as much as the guy that made the reproduction Roy Rogers bicycle and dressed up in '50s TV cowboy garb. I had my winter mask on without the balaclava and with the bolt and wingnut holding my glasses on. I'm sure there will be pictures posted tomorrow... In the parade the bicycles were used to help clear the route of people hanging over the fence and standing in the street. I was supposed to ride along with people pulling beads out of my kitty litter bucket panniers but that plan crashed and burned shortly after I got to the lineup, instead I would pick up beads that got dropped in the street and make sure they made it all the way to the crowd because I was riding closer to the ground and could reach them better than other riders. I'm sure that job would have gone to a low-racer pilot had there been one there (hint, hint). Next year we will try to get that "You have a cargo bike with bins in the back, you carry the beads while we throw them" thing all worked out ahead of time. Maybe I'll have a few more bucks to spend on beads too.

I had just over 16 miles total for the trip and no major pains other than the one I get from standing around not riding my bike waiting for the parade to start.

Sounds like it was a lot of fun, Opus.  A trike with a side bag would have been helpful also.  Surely someone has one of those.  Glad you attended and represented.

Hmmm... Yes, I'm sure I can think of someone who could do that.
