Title: for what it's worth........ Post by Lrodshy57 on Jul 3rd, 2012, 8:00pm I drove to town yesterday over the 'grey elephant bridge, which no one uses!and saw the west side lane painted with a bike emblem in center of it from the beginning only Sad to say I witnessed a near fatality(cycle /car) once so feel good about this marking Somhow think those new members who live downtown may have seen this already but , think it was there all the time! Title: Re: for what it's worth........ Post by Patti on Jul 4th, 2012, 11:15pm I use that bridge all the time and can assure you that quite a few other people use it regularly as well. It all depends upon the time of day. Not only do I drive it but I'm frequently on it on my trike too. |
Title: Re: for what it's worth........ Post by Lrodshy57 on Jul 5th, 2012, 5:22am m very glad to hear that! Now the next quesion is "HAve you ever seen that new member couple that said they ride every thursday regardless of heat?"Bearly recall they live downtown and have trikes?I had hoped they would reply. If you can recall their post , maybe can contact and set up a meeting Because of my responsibility to my mother, can't get out much if, at all and lady friend doesn't come over until afternoon. MY remake about 'grey elephant was in regard to article in newspaper about multimillion dollar white elephant which reported it has no traffic! When do you and husband ride? |
Title: Re: for what it's worth........ Post by Patti on Jul 5th, 2012, 4:37pm I have not met the couple in question, nor have I seen them when out riding. My husband and I usually ride on the weekends, generally in the mornings. We enjoy riding across the M2H (Margaret Hunt Hill) bridge, catching the Katy and going to breakfast at Le Madeleine or Kuby's. Sometimes we go across the Jefferson Bridge and ride to Fair Park or take the Santa Fe down to White Rock. Much of my riding is completely random right now because we have been having an extremely busy summer - I just ride whenever I can fit it in. Yesterday we rode about 15 miles but today I got in 41 before coming home to pack for a trip to Kansas City tomorrow. |
Title: Re: for what it's worth........ Post by Lrodshy57 on Dec 23rd, 2012, 10:01am Maybe I should have not mention my first post about bike signs, they are GONE not painted over, but scraped off concrete was it the city of Dallas who did it? Or a cycle hater? Lrodshy |
Title: Re: for what it's worth........ Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Dec 23rd, 2012, 6:39pm The GDB club ride this morning rode the MHH bridge into downtown -- there's definitely no bike lane, but there sure is ROOM for one! The shoulder area is wide, but it's currently strewn with rocks and debris... One of our guys got a flat as he was going around the exit loop. |

It was City of Dallas that removed the markings as even though this is planned for sharrows (the markings you saw) they aren't due to go down on pavement until 2014 or so. They couldn't allow the DIY DOT markings to remain in place because of liability and also because the markings were not MUTCD compliant. Note that if you put markings on a bike route ahead of schedule they will be more likely to stay if you make them MUTCD compliant, and also the MUTCD is online in PDF form. Not that I'm suggesting you join the DIY DOT, just saying that markings that are MUTCD compliant result in no liability problems for the Gov't. entity responsible for maintaining the markings. |
Title: Re: for what it's worth./flying lazyboy!....... Post by Lrodshy57 on Dec 24th, 2012, 10:01am opus, I have never liked to converse with ex-militay, as they all use initials when speeking, as thought all have had servise experience and know what all letters mean I need English only, Please send me your reply about the cycle markings with personal message so not to bother all others here! Also how do I join that group to help sweep and/or paint cycle markings. Please let me know whenever there is a group ready to sweep and/or paint |

Title: Re: for what it's worth........ Post by Opus the Poet on Dec 24th, 2012, 9:43pm Sorry. MUTCD = Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Gov't publication available online as a PDF. Use your Google-fu to find it because the various sites aren't always up all the time. It gives detailed descriptions of the various pavement markings and the materials allowed in making them. |
Title: Re: for what it's worth........ Post by rmillay on Dec 25th, 2012, 12:25pm The Jefferson street bridge markings were problematical anyway, since it put the bike lane on the left side of the road, to keep it away from the merge lanes coming in from the right. Then, apparently, you were supposed to cross into the right lane further along. I have always used the right lanes to cross, looking for merging traffic. It's hair-raising either way. But at least you get the thrill of having cheated death! [smiley=pepper.gif] |
Title: Re: for what it's worth........ Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Dec 26th, 2012, 9:48am For those who haven't ridden across it, here are my shots from riding across it last Sunday... a "virtual tour"... http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae256/pbrown8js/107_9872.jpg http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae256/pbrown8js/107_9875.jpg http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae256/pbrown8js/107_9878.jpg http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae256/pbrown8js/107_9879.jpg http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae256/pbrown8js/107_9880.jpg http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae256/pbrown8js/107_9887.jpg http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae256/pbrown8js/107_9889.jpg |
Title: Re: for what it's worth........ Post by Lrodshy57 on Dec 26th, 2012, 2:39pm LaZboy,Maybe you don't really need my ranger to load up the debri after all! If I recall correctly, most bridges all have drainage holes! So all that is really needed is a bunch of volunteers with big brooms to push all junk near the drain holes and allow gravity to do it naturely!btw, female volunteers would be welcomed, too Not nice to descrimanate volunteers. May sneak over there in my lime green t-shirt to do it on my own, Scince I don't have photo here, check me out on face book, am on my DragonFlyer, 70 y/o fart with full head of hair Lrodshy |
Title: Re: for what it's worth.... Post by Lrodshy57 on Mar 4th, 2013, 8:10am Have been on said new Calo bridge Lately and noticed debri is gone! could it be that City-of- Dallas might have been reading our mail? Scince it is posed to be a Dallas Land mark!, that they may actually be trying to keep it clean? |
Title: Re: for what it's worth........ Post by Patti on Mar 4th, 2013, 10:15am They just had the Marathon a while back, plus the Levee Run this past weekend. They probably cleaned the bridge for the running events. |
