Title: Sunday ride 06/17/12
Post by Monkeywrangler22 on Jun 15th, 2012, 7:05pm

Anybody wanting to ride approx 44.6mi with me at 12-13mph, I will be leaving the Kroger parking lot at Lake Forest & Eldorado in McKinney at either 1:30 I possible (Key let me know), or 2pm if the 1:30 time is too soon for folks.  Current plan is this route:  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1322856  but if folks want to cut some corners, there are various ways to shorten the ride by a few miles.  There is only one possible site to refill on water, and that needs to be before 3pm, IIRC, at the Weston Cafe.  So be prepared to haul all your water...and food.

Oh, I'm all the way with this ride.  I am not in any hurry at all.  If people prefer 2 p.m., super.

We'll see what tomorrow holds...maybe I'll meet up with y'all towards my house again about your 12.5 mile mark... [smiley=shrug.gif]

I actually saw a 2nd watering spot today when taking Dave his headset tools.  There is an external hose on the east side of the City Hall bldg in Weston that a roadie was using to refill bottles.  Given the opportunity though, I like to give the cafe a little business and use their porcelain... Did he ride by himself today?

Yes he did.  Key had a conflict with the start time, and then Dave got a 30min late start.  I will post later on this thread, what sort of start time decision Key & I reach.  I'm leaning toward 1:30, but don't know if that works for his schedule or not.

Key says 1:30 works for him as a departure time from Krogers, so that's good for me too.  Will leave Krogers at 1:30 if anyone else wants to come along.  Jim, if you want to meet us somewhere along the Weston road (like last time) that would be cool too.

FYI, Dave is just a couple miles from completing his imperial Century today!   [smiley=pepper.gif]

Dave, you go, Boy!
What was that average speed?  I rode out to the start of the ride this afternoon.  Not bad as a regular thing.  Oh, boy, I did rte. 380 on the way down.  Just a F-L-Y-I-N-G course from Community to Lake Forest Dr.  As a side note: McKinney City Council struck down a measure to make 380 more cycling friendly with a bike lane.  They said there were too many cycle/auto accidents on the rte.  Hmmm, if you painted the place to remind motorists that bikes belong there, and everyone did as they were supposed to do, Voila!  fewer accidents.

I'd like to do the course with you, sometime.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

key, Kyle and I saw you last night on 'bike friendly' 380.  You were at the light at Community and we could see it flashing all the way to the Race Trac.  I told Kyle you were there and all we could see was the light until you were much closer!  You are a braver man that I to ride on that road!  One of my office mates had his collar bone broken and his car totaled when he was hit by a truck who was trying to beat the traffic while crossing from the Target parking lot all the way over to the Chick-Fil-A.  I don't even like riding the sidewalks along there...

Still unsure about joining the ride today as I don't know what the kids have planned, and church do sent get out until around noon...someone text me at (972) three oh two -3684, and I'll let you know if I can meet up with you at the ronedveuz point on Weston Road again or somewhere else.  All depends on everyone else's plans.

Looks to be a HOT ride today...good HHH practice!

Key,

I've got a write up under did you ride today with my stats...

By the way all.  As Ken and I found out yesterday, stay away from Mackey Road, (connector from Preston Road to Howe).  The county has turned two sections of it into a gravel pit.

Neat!  I am always happy to hear that my lights are pretty visible.  (Gee, we spend enough on them, don't we?)  The rear a Dinotte 400.  Yeah, I love 380, and the service road of 121.  They're my favorite playgrounds, because they are long, and very smooth.  Really, as long as you follow the rules of the road, and ride in a predictable manner, things generally go smoothly.  The only problems occur when folks don't want to continue driving, but turn into spectators, and slow everyone else down.  The police just laugh when you ask them to speak to the offenders.  I have been riding on busy roads since I was about 11 years old in Massachusetts.  You just develop a comfort level with it.

By the way, this is what I rode: http://tinyurl.com/7lb6dpr  It looked just like this, only the shifter didn't include the parking brake, and mine had a really long sissy bar.  It was nasty to the fifth power!  So you see, I have been into dragster HPVs for some time!

Jim, I'd like to ride with you on your commute, when can we do that?

Come ride with me any time.  We'll make it home for dinner which you can join us for.  How many miles do you want to do?  I have a few routes set up, the one anlong 2933 is pretty nice (yes, I've finally built up to where I can go that far...I remember when you first told me about that and I thought it was WAY too far out of the way to go home!!)

Any way, I try and do 10-20 miles on my commutes home, I'm back on the bike today so just let me know.  If you can text me at (972) three oh two- 3784.  I have several routes that don't involve gravel roads and some that do...

Well, Key and I managed 44mi yesterday, though as y'all know Jim was injured in a gravel crash and did not end up riding with us.  Jim, whenyou texted me that you were going home, we were just a mile or two west of you at Myers Park...

The ride started out sunny (aka HOT) with a southerly breeze.  That itself wasn't bad as it did help propel me up the road some...  We got to Weston a bit too late to catch the Cafe for a refill on ice and filtered water (closed early for Fathers Day I think as we were there right at 3pm).  Moved on up the road along 134 we were feeling the heat until suddenly we got a bit of cloud cover!  Wow what a difference that made.  Then we stopped briefly at cr133, and I noticed that there were storms on the horizon.  Key may be ok riding in storms, but it is not high on my list of favorite things...

We headed back into Weston on 455, and rewatered at the City Hall hose (note:  the water is clean but tasted of sulphur rather a lot).  Then off to show Key the neat road of cr171.  That outlets on Custer(2478) near the big Methodist cemetery.  We cut down cr126 to cr125 to avoid a lengthy stretch of Custer (only shortened the ride by 2mi), and then back on the roads we had ridden outbound, to Krogers.

It was a pleasant ride, with good company.  I ended with a 12.2 avg --a little slower than my normal by a couple tenths, and I noticed a bit of power loss due to having lowered my seat recline by a notch.  However it DID feel a lot more aero.  Going south in to the wind was much less noisy in the ears, and less wind was felt on my face.  I'm going to leave the recline where it is at for a while to see if I like it.

Jim, sent you a text.

What a fun ride with Vicky through a really cool route.  I'll have to keep practicing it to get used to it.  I have fallen in love with that postage stamp town of Weston.  The themes of peacefulness, rural setting, etc., suggesting residents of high moral values, really appeals to me.  I'll  have to hit that diner when they're open to taste and drink in what they're all about.
Thanks for the ride, Vicky!  I do have a speedometer, a cateye something or other, but once you go GPS, you just can't go back.  I have relegated it to real time camera work, when the cam is attached.
