FROM THE HHH100 website -- THE ROUTES HAVE CHANGED:

Check out the new route for the 100 mile RIDE. For the first time, 100 mile riders will go through Sheppard Air Force Base and  PYRO PETE and Hell’s Gate will move to downtown Electra!

Wow, that's very different. I've always complained that I never have ridden through the base because I've always done the 100 mile route. I guess that will change.

I notice this new route makes the course to go mostly uphill the first half and mostly downhill the second half. That will be fun.

Email Susan Robertson at susan@lbcwf.org and tell her you want to reserve a spot on the gym floor. It's like camping out, there's always a number of we rbenters there, and we have a blast.

What advice would you give for someone wanting to ride the 100 for the first time (other than just start practicing)...longest to date I believe is 26 (leisurely) miles with no problems and felt great afterward...for some reason I just want to do this ride.

I want to get with someone that can already do this kind of distance and see what it feels like.  Maybe some laps at WRL or something just to see if I can go that far...I'm planning to start riding more after work other than just my commute, but we'll see how that goes with the family priorities...

Jim - I can give you fresh perspective on this as HHH was my first century back in 2010.  Send me a PM or email or something if you want to get together Saturday morning and ride.  More than likely I'll have to be back by noon so I will be starting early!  WRL might be good so that we can ride together and start/finish whenever we are ready.

I've done near every one of them. Lots of riding, nothing is better than miles. Otherwise...

OHMYGAWD! My thighs are cramping!!! OH, my quads are cramping!!! AHHHHH, I am getting a cramp in my midsection. OHMG is that even possible? I think I may huuuuuurrrrllllll~!! (new little wife standing over me, "shall I call an ambulance?" NNNOOOOOOOOO!! AWWWW, make it stopppppppp! I'll never do another &$*&$ bike ride again as long as I live!!!!

Excerpts from "an evening at my home" after HHH#1 circa 1982.  A mere 11 hours from beginning to end. Kegs of beer at every rest stop. Trained at night, doing laps around the local track, on my pawn shop 40# bike - good times...

In further conversations with Tony, I recalled a 50K I did while I was deployed to Diego Garcia.  I did it on an MTB and I was sore and tired afterward.  I dropped off our group to help a friend with a flat and never recovered the group.  Towards the end I met up with another lone MTB rider and we exchanged drafting as best we could just to finish.  Of course there was only support (water) at the 25K turn, but I was still able to finish.  I did that with no training at all...just jumped on my bike and went!

I'm now looking into training, riding nutrition and eating on a bike.  I also calulated that with at least a 10.9 average I could make Hell's Gate by the 12:30 closing time.

I should have also pointed out that you should mention in the email that you're with the rbent group. Drop Paul's name so they'll know for sure which group you're with, and they'll put you in the same area with the rest of us. If you are a loud snorer, don't mention rbent at all...

One tends to have a faster than usual average on the HHH ride, because it's relatively flat terrain, and you get some random drafting help with all the packs passing by, and you might even hook up with others riding at your pace.

HOWEVER -- Just because you CAN make Hell's Gate just before the closing time, doesn't mean you should attempt the 100 miles...  because at that point you've still got 40 miles to go, and it's already getting hot out there.  I might strongly suggest the shorter cutoff route...

As this will be my first attempt at anything beyond my work commute, I am now considering the 100 K.  I'll see what tomorrows 51 miles feels like.  If not this year, one day I will do the 100 mile.

Am tempted to bring the Burley trailer and collect all the stuff people drop or that falls off their bikes.

I remember seeing everything from water bottles to spare wheels one year..

There is also the unofficial 72ish route. Continue straight instead of turning at Hell's Gate on the 100 mi route. Several miles down the road the shorter routes join this road. We always see the sag trailer on the short off route stretch, and there is one more rest stop as well. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Thanks, Bud. I forgot about that. Looked at Paul's map, then went to the website to look at 2011 maps, which the site states are available, but found nothing. The link for the new 100 miles is no longer active.

Title: Re: HHH 2012
Post by Bud_Bent on Jun 1st, 2012, 9:56pm

The link to the proposed route (http://www.hh100.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/2012-HHH-100-Mile-Proposed-Route.pdf) still works, and from everything I've read, it sounds like that will stand as the new route. All of the shorter routes haven't changed.

The only way to shortcut the route much from the new Hell's Gate in Electra would be to just come down US 287 back to Wichita Falls, so I'm guessing that's where they'll direct anyone who doesn't make Hell's Gate before it closes. I haven't tried to figure the mileage that way.

Title: Re: HHH 2012
Post by JimFPU on Jun 2nd, 2012, 6:49am

The site says it will be about 82 miles if you are directed to take the shorter route.

The map downloaded from the site has the "bail-out" route going down 477 to join the 60 milers

Title: Re: HHH 2012
Post by Bud_Bent on Jun 2nd, 2012, 8:54pm

Ah yes, the new map that shows the bailout can be seen here (http://www.hh100.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/HHH-OVERALL-RIDE-MAP-2012-with-Bailout.pdf). It joins the 60 milers alright, but going the opposite direction as them. But then it doesn't show were the bailout route goes after they hit 368.

My shoulder surgery has been scheduled for August 10th, just two weeks before HHH. Will I be able to ride?

Title: Re: HHH 2012
Post by Monkeywrangler22 on Jun 15th, 2012, 1:59pm

I'd think about cancelling the HHH, Bud.  I was in the pillow-sling for 8wks post-op and another 4wks without the pillow.  I don't know just how extensive your reconstruciton will be, but even if you can ride 100mi one-handed, the risk of a fall on the repaired shoulder that soon after surgery would not be worth the risk, if it were me.

I know it's not the words you wanted to read, but discretion is the better part of valor, and all that.

Now, IF you can borrow a trike...then I'd talk to the doc post-op about maybe doing the ride.  But I bet you will have only had at best, your initial post-op followup visit, where they will check to make sure the incisions are healing.  Do you know yet if you will get arthroscopic, or the full incision surgery?

Title: Re: HHH 2012
Post by aikigreg on Jun 15th, 2012, 2:12pm

Most of you guys may not know or remember this, but Bud was riding two weeks after he had half a lung removed.  I can't remember, Bud, was it before or after you'd had the staples removed?

However, in this case, I bet MW is right.  I expect a fall could undo repairs.  I'm sure the doc can give you a specific time table.

If he/she allowed it though, I'd captain your tandem and ride with you if we fit and if I got used to the bike well before your surgery.

Title: Re: HHH 2012
Post by Bud_Bent on Jun 15th, 2012, 6:00pm

In my case, I don't think a fall would undo repairs. The surgeon says the joint needs reshaped and rebuilt, but none of the tendon tears I have need worked on. It's just a matter of degeneration, over use, normal wear, and arthritis that are making everything in the joint not pivot and slide like it's supposed to. For that reason, it's only supposed to be a 4 to 6 week rehab. I know better than to ask the surgeon when I can ride. He'd say six weeks, which is exactly what my lung surgeon said.

I'm thinking I'll be at HHH. I might ride a shorter route at an easier pace with more stops, but as long as I feel ok, I'll be there.

Hey bent-friends,
I've done HHH a few times a long time ago, before discovering bent riding.  Should be a lot more comfortable.  Is there going to be a group from the Metroplex? Bents and Tand's are starting at the bridge. I'm not sure if that's good or not.  What ya think? I'd like to go if there are going to be some from here, like Bud. I've got lodging taken care of.

What, is that the less than 6 hours pace group?  I'm going to find out if my friend-non-bent rider is going before I decide for sure. I guess I better decide by Sunday as on-line regis. closes then.

I would really like to get to know other bent riders.  Bud is the first one I've had an opportunity to ride with.  I can't keep up with him, of course. I'll be looking for events in the Metroplex to ride with the group.  Maybe I'll see you at something, if not HHH.

Come on out - there will be a lot of us that will be there and have not yet admitted it yet - like me.  Though I have never ridden with him - I know I can't keep up with Bud either (in miles or pace).  I'm going to be riding the 100k on my Corsa at an avg somewhere between a snails pace and 19 mph.  I guess I'll find out once it is over but I intend (at least now) to not work too hard.  That is subject to change once I see the DF pacelines to chase.

Guys,
I'm driving my new RVan which has room for a couple more guys and bikes.  Don't have any more space for sleeping unless you want to bring a cot or sleep on the ground under my awning.  Hope I can get a RV spot with hook-ups would be great.  If not, it's still OK.  I have one friend with me, a wedgie rider.  He just finished RAGBREA (sp?), so he a good rider and a great friend.  Be glad to have other riders though.

If you show up on Friday most all the RV spots but you might be able to squeeze in somewhere. bring extra water hose and if you have a extension cord bring that to. I took a Pop Up camper a couple years ago and barely found me a spot.  that was on a friday. Good luck.

Oh........ everyone that is going, try to wear your RBENT jersey if you have one - it will be very cool to see all those red, white & blue jersey's up at the front.

I used my Fathers Day money to get a HHH shirt, and so I'll be wearing that..

yea, I called and they say the RV spots are ususally taken by Thursday.  I can't go that early so I made reservations 6 mi. down the road at Coyote Ranch RV park. Wasn't free, but not too much.  not sure if I can dirve it to the staging area or not.  Its 24 ft. long. May be hard to find two spots end to end.  Any thoughts on that by anyone?  I haven't been there in 20 years.  They say the have mapped a back road route from the RV park to the staging area that is a little over 6 mi if I want to ride up there.  May do that.  Guess I better take my lights for that.

I'm open to any other suggestions and comments (well, the friendly kind anyway). [smiley=grin.gif]

Looking forward to good conversation with Bud riding along up to WF.  I'd like to wear the RBENT jersey but may favor my Marine Corps one instead (for the benefit of the Air Force folks, I know they'll love it).  ;D

I might have to break out my Marine jersey also...  We could team up and steal all the Air Forces beer and girls.   [smiley=stirthepot.gif]  [smiley=stirthepot.gif]

I'll bring both jersey's and see what happens...as far as the weather I've (selfishly) been praying for great weather and I believe God answered!

Jim I think your prayers are being answered.  The current fotecast is for a high of 88 degrees!!

They might have to rename the ride if it holds.

What weather you checking?  I see high of 97 w/ 30% chance of rain and 18 mph headwind for the last 1/2 of the ride.

Ah, so with 18 MPH air conditioning, I should really see the aerodynamic affects of the Aerotrunk!

Actually I think I ride faster into a headwind. Nothing like watching roadies struggle to try and keep up to get you motivated.

I park at the Bridwell Ag Center. Located across the river from HHH Registration and Consumer Show.
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=birdwell+AB+center,+wichata+falls+texas&ie=UTF-8
I usually get there about 6:00 am and there is plenty of parking at that time.
I have seen quite a few RVs parked there.

Note: this parking is only 4-5 blocks from the HHH start

Riders of the HHH,
Have a great flight!  I'll be praying for a safe, and fun passage.

Tailwinds to you all!

Thanks Key!  The problem is tail wind turn into headwind sooner or later...in this case they were 25-30 for the last 20 miles or so.
