Title: Collin County RBENTers Cinco de Mayo meet/greet &n
Post by JimFPU on Apr 25th, 2012, 10:34am

Greetings all.  It would seem we're organizing a Cinco de Mayo ride in Collin County for us RBENTers (North of Dallas RBENT, or CCRBENT) whatever!  All are welcome.

Anyway, looks like we'll start at the Kroger/Chase Bank on W. Eldorado Parkway and ride north to a Wilmeth loop, and back to Kroger.  May stop and have a lunch somewhere either along the way or after the ride.  It looks to be only 16 miles, and since I'm on the ride any slow bent riders are welcome.  The intent is to ba fairly casual for fellowship and meet/greet.  Would prefer it to be a 'no drop' ride which to my understanding is so the group stays together and rides with each other.  Looking for just a fun ride with fellow bents.

Saturday May 5, 9:00 AM
Start/finish Kroger/Chase Bank  on W. Eldorado Parkway
map: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1098857

Hope to see some of you there!

There is a nice loop option on Wilmeth road for those looking for more miles.

I'll throw out a second option og a loop over at Irwin Park.  While not a closed course it's advantage is lower traffic and a chance to get some new riders road time.

So call it a late breakfast!  Or Brunch! ;D

Only food option north of Eldorado is a chicken place at 380.  I would suggest Benny's Bagels across the street from Krogers for post ride food/coffee/etc.  We could then continue down Lake Forest about half a mile and stop in Winniford Park to eat.  We could use the gazebo and tables there.  Or we could just eat at Benny's and have folks watch out for the bikes and trikes.

If we're doing 16 miles and do it in an hour, that takes us to 11:30.  But I am thinking that our chill riders aren't planning to tap out 16 miles in an hour.  We could start at 10:30 a.m. and just play it by ear...or leg, as it were.

Let's leave it at 9, that way it's not too hot, and there is still some day left to do other things.

I invited a roadie friend of mine from work who may be interested in bents.  She is going to ride with us just to have someone to ride with as all the roadies she knows from another club are hammer heads and don't want to be slowed with her riding along.  She also has some fear of road riding as she was hit last year and spent a few days in the hospital (driver did not stop).  We'll need to show her the "Take the lane" technic.

Once all the plans are finalized for this ride - please post them up (start time/location, route options/speed, food options, etc.).  If I can get a babysitter for the afternoon I'm going to ride up from Rowlett to join ya'll.  If not - I might be able to come for a little while but would probably have to be back home by 12.  Just want to make sure I don't miss it!

Jim,

Remind Vicky or myself to show your friend our Gopro camera set up.

Vicky is supposed to be dropping off a DVD of yesterday's two idiot drivers.

We're curious what McKinney PD will do with it.

Um, plans are finalized Tony-we'd love to see you there.  See the beginning of the thread.

No drop, fellowship ride to meet & greet.  16 miles slower paced.  May stop for food/beverage at the end.

Anyone have anything else to add jump in!  I'm not sure how I got to be the organizer...but since this is my first go easy!

Appreciate it Jim - just wanted to make sure I wasn't early/late or biting off more than I could chew mileage/pace wise with my commute thrown in.  If anyone wants to join me (assuming I can make it - I will post up towards the end of the week) I will most likely be taking this route to the start and back:  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1132599

Should be 56 overall (20 ride to the ride + 16 ride + 20 ride back from the ride) but I need all the miles I can get.  I'm leaving in 5 weeks to do a week long ride across Oklahoma from the Texas border to Kansas.  I started doing 60+ mile rides on Saturday in April but have slacked the last two weekends so this will get me back into it.

I learned that I can't drive to WRL and plan to ride 100k.  It is too easy load up and go home.  I have to ride there that way the only way to get back is to ride.  No easy way out!

Denman - appreciated the offer.  I'll take you up on it in the event that something goes unexpectedly.

Don't intend to thread jack but as I was drawing out my route I noticed Lake Forest continues north from the meeting point then turns west into Preston.  Preston continues North to Lake Texoma.  I have been wanting to ride from my house to Oklahoma - just because - and because people think you are crazy when you say things like that.  Anyway - that looks like it might be a good route.  Anyone else interested in joining me?  Would catch a ride in a car back.  Finding a free Saturday/Sunday to do it might be a challenge.  But if anyone is interested, let me know I'd love some company.  Also, any advice/opinion on that route would be appreciated.

Tony, you and I need to talk about Oklahoma, I'm game!

In fact I've laid out a double leaving from McKinney and ending in Oklahoma.  Some really windy day it might just be a go.

A co-worker today told me about a report from CA regarding a hit and run driver.  One of a pair of cyclists had a camera which recorded just a glimpse of the car, but police were able to slow and enhance the video to discover whose car it was, and he is under arraignment.
Go here:  http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/04/tiny-bicycle-camera-helps-solve-hit-and-run/

A camera is so important to riders.  I am normally recording my rides, and on each and every ride, on each leg...coming and going...there is some sort of foolish behavior.  I have spoken to McKinney police, and it's been largely exasperating.  They can't, or won't do anything until you get hit.  Even then, it's (s)he said, (s)he said, unless there is something to examine.  Enter the cyclist's black box.  ALWAYS record.  They must use the video if there is an accident.  One cop even told me that when they are at a crime scene, and someone is shooting a video, they will order its use for forensic purposes.

That was my experience to day attempting to file a complaint on the two drivers I recorded yesterday.  I was told they could not use the video to file charges for traffic violations since there had been no accident.

Bob,

Both Vicky and I are already members.  I've got Fleas and Trees on the done list and am making plans for the OK is OK in September and going for the 300K and my first double.  Spanish Fort is high on my to do list as well.

So it looks to be about 7 or 8 of us so far.  Any one else?

This is supposed to be a fun/fellowship ride so come on out no matter what your speed, and we'll hang together!  The Hammers I'm sure will do little sprints here and there, but that's part of the fun!  Don't be shy thinking "I don't want to hold anyone back" it's not that kind of ride-let's just get together and ride!  Looking forward to seeing/meeting all of you!

For anyone interested - here is the map of all roads traveled from Rowlett and including the CCRBENT ride.  I know there are some roads up there I want to investigate.

Tony, north of hwy 380 is nice riding, though it is chip n seal.  We know a lot of the roads up that way too, so any time you want to wander up this way for a longer ride, either Dave or I will probably be available to ride on the weekends.

What we were on yesterday was pretty acceptable, are the roads you're referring to the same grade, or coarser?

Some is better, Weston rd was just resurfaced, and the rest of it no worse really that I can think of.  My perceptions may be affected some by the difference in Giro26 vs 700.  But if yesterday didn't shake any fillings loose, you'll probably be ok.
