Title: LSR Dart, June 16th
Post by Bud_Bent on Apr 2nd, 2012, 10:15pm

I notice that LSR is having a Dart on June 16th. I think we should put together a recumbent team. We need a team captain and a route. Any takers? For those who don't know what a Dart is, here (http://www.rusa.org/dartrules.html) are the rules.

EDIT: We also need a name for the team. The last recumbent Dart team we had was called Dart Vader.

I would love to ride.

A ride like that could get me out.  Unfortunately, I'll be out of the state for that.   [smiley=undecided.gif]

It sounds like the Dart will begin at Lynn Creek Marina at Joe Pool Lake, so here's (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/recumbent-dart) a proposed route. It makes a stop at Venus, then Itasca, then Italy, then the ever important stop 25k before the end of the ride (you have to do the last 25k in the last two hours) at Midlothian.

I'll join the team, but there's a chance that my shoulder surgery could happen just before the ride date and make me cancel, so someone else should be team captain. Peggy and I make two, so we need three more. Steve? Daniel? We need to start out with the maximum five team members, in case I'm a last minute scratch. Should we recruit Mark M as the token upright?

If I can get permission, I'll ride.  But I gotta ask first  ;)   I guess we have to be LSR members to ride, or just RUSA?

if I can get myself back in shape by then, i'd be up for it, but I'd be happy to bow out to a spouse.

That's a good question, Shellene. I was assuming it was just RUSA membership required, but I don't know that.

Bud do you think we could come up with a team? Steve is a maybe, he has a other ride he may be doing. But I missed the first Dart you guys did. We had so much fun on the Fleche.  Peggy

Post by Killer Bee on Apr 9th, 2012, 9:38pm

Yeah, I have this little ride called RAAM (4 person team) as an alternate, so I can't commit to the DART. Bud, I remember the DART we did a few years ago (with Nelson, & Greg). That was a lot of fun.

Title: Re: LSR Dart
Post by Bud_Bent on Apr 9th, 2012, 10:40pm

I didn't even think about RAAM being at the same time. Peggy, it only takes 3 to 5 riders for a team, so let's do it. Any other rando riders interested? It's 180k and you have to take a full 12 hours to do it, so it's not like you have to be a fast rider at all.

How about it, Shellene, you going to slow down for a day? What about Bryan?

I appear to be free that weekend!  I'm not sure if I'm fast enough (14-15mph) to be a desirable team member, but if you'll have me it sounds like fun.  :)

Shelley, as Bud said, you don't have to be fast. In fact, there's generally a lot of down time as the team cannot finish before the 12 hr time limit. a 15 mph avg. is just about perfect for a DART.

I'm in since Bryan is out of town.  Slow down?  I'm going to have to train to be able to keep up!  (just about 0 miles so far this year - school)  However, school will be finished in early May, so I will have plenty of time to train.

Post by shellenefoster on Apr 11th, 2012, 9:06am

One more rider and we could form 2 teams and if anyone has to back out, then we could consolidate into 1 team (if I'm counting correctly - you know how well mathematicians count  ;))

Title: Re: LSR Dart
Post by Bud_Bent on Apr 11th, 2012, 2:42pm

Ok, here's the list so far:

Bud
Peggy
Shellene
Greg
Shelley
Paul

Teams are to be 3 to 5 members, so we do indeed have enough riders for two teams. With two teams, we could add 4 more riders, so who else wants to join us? I spoke with Pam Wright on a ride last Saturday, and she thinks since LSR is sponsoring the dart, that both LSR (http://www.lonestarrandon.org/LSR-Membership.pdf) and RUSA (http://www.rusa.org/memberservices.html) memberships are required.

Anyone who is interested should read over the dart rules (http://www.rusa.org/dartrules.html). As has been mentioned, you don't need to be a fast rider, since the team rides together and needs to use almost all of the 12 hours to complete the distance. You do, however, need to be able to complete a 112 mile ride. Greg hasn't done this kind of distance since he's been riding again, but with over two months still left to train, I'm confident he can do it. So can anyone else who wants to start training for it now.

If we do two teams, we'll need a second dart route. It should start at or near Lynn Creek Marina and be at least 112 miles long. I still need to check some of the roads on my route. Who wants to design a second route?

Title: Re: LSR Dart
Post by Bud_Bent on Apr 11th, 2012, 2:51pm

Mark Metcalfe says he'll join us. Mark doesn't ride a recumbent, but he's one of the most savvy rando riders I know, and has been friends with several of us rbenters for a long time. So the list is:

Bud
Peggy
Shellene
Greg
Shelley
Paul
Mark M

Bud what do we need to do next. I know Vickie is the one how is oragizing this Dart. I don't have a route. Im not sure how to design one. Help!!!

Title: Re: LSR Dart
Post by Bud_Bent on Apr 22nd, 2012, 10:43pm

Ok, I'll captain one team, but there is the chance that shoulder surgery will keep me from riding, so I need at least 4 riders on my team, in case I have to bail last minute. My ortho evaluation appointment is just over a week away, so hopefully I'll soon know when the surgery will be. I've been waiting since early February, and my shoulder is getting worse by the day, so there's no way I'm going to postpone when I get scheduled.

We'll call my team Dart Vader. I have a route made up, though I still need to test ride some of the roads, and get all the info on the controls. I'll email Vickie and see what else I need to do. Do we have a captain and route designer for a second team? There are existing 200k routes out of Joe Pool that could be used for a second route. Who's riding with me?

Post by Kwijybow on Apr 23rd, 2012, 10:53am

I'm trying to get some riding in, and would love to put this on the calendar for motivation.  I have some undetermined travel this summer, but think it is more likely that will happen in July.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Title: Re: LSR Dart
Post by Bud_Bent on Apr 24th, 2012, 1:35pm

I talked to Vickie. She didn't know all the details yet, but the Dart will definitely be on June 16th out of Joe Pool. As long as all the teams use different routes, we can all start at 7:00 am (if two teams use the same route, they can't start at the same time). There are lots of existing 200k routes that start at Joe Pool. If we field a second team, it could use one of those existing routes (Vickie said no one had claimed Rio Vista Rumble yet). Here are the 8 riders who've said they wanted to ride.

Bud
Peggy
Shellene
Greg
Shelley
Paul
Mark M
Nelson

Is everyone still riding? We still need a name for the second team. And who wants to be captain of it? Paul? Nelson? Shellene? Peggy?

I'm still in, and if someone else will captain it I don't care which "team" I'm on, so long as I get to ride with you fine folks.

Though may I suggest the other team be "Dart Mouth" :)

Thanks Bub I will help an anyway I can. If you can't ride I will happy to be a back up captin. It looks like the bents will have 2 teams.  [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] That would be so cool.
I know we can't use the same route but could we use the same controls? That way we might all get to see each other.
This is going to be so much fun, its like a slumber party but on bikes.

I've heard nothing about a route for the second team. As soon as there is a captain, he or she should claim Rio Vista Rumble for their route.

Recumbent Dart riders are dropping like flies. I'm still waiting for some replies, but it looks like there will be no more than one recumbent team. The team name is Dart Vader. I'm the captain. The ride will start at 6:30 am on the 16th at Lynn Creek Marina. There will be a dinner at the Oasis right after the ride finishes at 6:30 pm. One member from each Dart team is required to attend. I plan on being there, so our team is covered.

Creating a route proved more difficult than I had imagined. There are so many county roads south of here that are gravel, now (I wouldn't want to ride Rio Vista Rumble on road tires right now). But I've submitted a route that I think will be fun. I'll probably submit it as a permanent after the Dart. It's called Itasca Disasta (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1259312). There will be hills (it goes up Orphan Hill backwards, and that's not the highest point on the route), boulder seal, and stretches that really catch the wind, everything we like on a Texas ride.

I'll notify everyone who the team members are as soon as I get that finalized.

What bike is everybody riding?  I'll be on the Xstream, but am still deciding which seat to use -- I think the Slingmesh might be a better choice for long-term comfort, although it's less aerodynamic...

I'll be on the Corsa. Besides being my fastest bike, it's the most comfortable. It won't be a fast pace tomorrow, so comfort above speed.
