Title: Chili Pepper Ride cancelled

Quote:
I am very sorry to say that the bike rally will have to be canceled.  The City of Dallas refuse to give us a permit unless we get 30 officers 3 supervisors and 1 lieutenant.
The cost would be over $5600.00 and we cannot afford to do that.  The committee is meeting to reschedule the13th annual bike rally and change the route so that we would exclude Dallas.  I have gotten the permits from Corps of Engineers, Grand Prarie , Cedar Hill and Midlothian but cannot do the ride thru Dallas.
We can keep your application for the ride when we reschedule or if you want the money refunded we can do that.  Thank you for supporting us.

Too bad, because this ride supports a good cause. Quote from Ride site: "This bike rally is the main fundraiser for the Calumet, a center that provides programs for at-risk youth in the West Oak Cliff neighborhood."

Looks like the city of Dallas goes after organized bike rides as hard as they go after pro baseball and football stadiums, huh?

Too bad , sad to say this problem has been growing especially for this ride. The ride in and back to the center is one not for the faint of heart. In a way this change could very well be the fresh breath of life the ride has needed for years. I have ridden the ride a few times but have been one of the radio communicators for many more while my health would allow me. Most of those years, I worked com. in the B&B suv (the one that the passenger window didn't work, you couldn't open the pasenger door from the outside and had no cig lighter power outlet for a radio  [smiley=lolk.gif] ) Like that suv, the ride suffered from no safe way back up the last long but 3-5% grade ride having to deal with wacky car drivers on a very busy street by 11AM.
So relocating the start finish is a "God send" IMHO. The organizers are perhaps the nicest folks you will ever meet and can make a dollar donation streach like no other organization I know of, and the kids they raise the funds for truly need al the help they can get, they are but one step away from life on the streets, so help the center any way you can. If you havent asked for a refund yet, please be patient , your funds are greatly appreciated by this small organization.
