Title: Any Good Fort Worth Wheel Builders out there?
Post by Tiger_Mike on Jul 29th, 2011, 10:43pm

Can anyone recommend a good wheelbuilder here in Fort Worth?
I've had a Rans V2 for a couple of years, and just bought an Xstream. I love the bike, but hate the wheels that came on it (650 x 23C tires). Actually the wheels are fine, I've discovered the problem is my fat ass  [smiley=sad.gif]. I could (and should) lose some weight, but it's easier to change the wheels! So here's the backstory, for those that want some humor: I had two flats that were caused by having thin plastic rim tape. The tape wasn't broken anywhere, but it had stretched way down into the spoke holes, and the tube was pooching down into the hole too far and failing there. Switched over to velox tape, and that fixed that problem. Then the next day, I was riding slow on a graveled detour along the Trinity Trail and just nicked the edge of a larger stone with the rear tire, and heard the pop and whoosh. dammit. Had about 100 psi in the tire at the time, and was only going about 6 MPH. It was kinda dark at the time...couldn't see things very well, didn't take time to remove the headlight to use as a work light. Put in a new tube, pumped it up, and it popped. nuts. Thought maybe I pinched it or something. Pulled it out and patched it, put it back together. Pumped it up, it lasted about 60 feet and went flat. double nuts. Fortunatly, a good sam came along just then. He said "lets try it again", so I patched the tube again and pumped it up. Everything seemed fine, but while we were standing there talking, it popped again. Triple nuts. Anyway, the good sam gave me a ride home in his truck. It was pretty funny about that - he was worried about having two bikes in his truck - he was worried about scratching the paint on his new $175 bike from Walmart. I didn't tell him what mine cost. The next day I looked at the tire, and saw it had a small tear in the sidewall where I hit the rock. I think the tube was protruding thru the tear, getting strangulated, and popping there. So I bought a Bontrager R3 to put on. Pumped that bad boy up to 125 psi, put 110 psi in the front, pulled off the Look pedals and put some platforms on, and went for a ride. I figured it would be better if I was wearing comfortable walking shoes, just in case. Did 18 miles with no problems, got home just fine, but I didn't like the ride quality with the tires pumped that high. I think I want to get some 26 inch wheels (559), and be able to run a tire with a lower pressure. So who shoud I get to build the wheels for me?
