Title: HHH time already?
Post by johnnybent on May 8th, 2011, 9:15pm

I got my HHH paper in the mail this week...pg. 12...a photo of three recumbent riders going throught Sheppard.  I did the hundred for some dumb reason last year but really missed the cadets as they cheered. I'll go for the sixty this year because Sheppard has a rest stop and the cadets...if you've ever been throught it, you know the feeling.

Yep, it cool going through the cadets....

Title: Re: HHH time already?
Post by Ric_Clark on May 8th, 2011, 11:20pm

And all this time I thought it was just that I was unable to make Hell's Gate in time before they shut it off....now I believe it was a desire to ride through Shepard and see them line the roadway and cheer the riders on.

It is a moving and proud time when you ride down that roadway and here them cheer you on.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Gah, it's on the same day as my wedding anniversary!  I've always wanted to do this ride, not sure if this is the year I'll be able to....

What a great anniversary gift it could be.  Start hinting now.

I wouldn't have a problem myself, she usually forgets.

My husband doesn't ride.  Somehow I don't think a day alone waiting for me to finish a hot and difficult ride will not be his idea of fun.  ;)

Aw, c'mon Shelly. What could be more romantic for an anniversary than a trip to beautiful Wichita Falls?  Well, ok. I guess there might be a FEW more romantic places...   ;D

And you could spend your anniversary sleeping in separate sections of the Lamar Babtist Church, on an air mattress....   besides, they have an IHOP nearby!!!   [smiley=cheesy.gif]

Did anyone notice that they're giving disposable timing chips to everyone at HHH this year? They're moving the start back one block so that everyone (who doesn't cheat the start) will go under the timing truss at the start inflatable and get their time tracked. There will be timing trusses at various spots on the course, including Hell's Gate, so you can see your time to each one.

It will make it nice for those further back who get delayed. Your time won't start until you pass under the start inflatable, so even those who sit and wait for a while can get an accurate time of their ride. You just put the timing chip on your helmet and as long as you pass under that start inflatable, you'll get timed. They say they'll end up with more ride stats than has ever happened for a ride that size. Pretty cool.

An hour-long pause at the Beer Stop makes a timing chip pretty irrelevant....   [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

But that's the kind of thing they're wanting to learn from the chips, where riders stop and for how long, along with how many really ride what they signed up for.

I hadn't thought about that aspect.  Sure would give them good intel on how to better the ride.

Got my spot reserved, too.

I notice the start for the pro racers has been changed from 7:00 am to 12:30 pm this year. Guess they got tired of those pesky recumbent riders catching up with the pack.

Title: Re: HHH time already?
Post by rmillay on May 23rd, 2011, 4:54pm

I don't know why they'd want a pack of racers screaming through a bunch of slow, weaving stragglers at the end!

Title: Re: HHH time already?
Post by jcsadowski on May 23rd, 2011, 5:04pm

So many riders started early that they got in the way of the racers.

I assume they have a different return route.

Title: Re: HHH time already?
Post by rmillay on May 23rd, 2011, 5:08pm

I guess organization is what they do.  They've organized more races than I have.

Ya know with the chips, the organizers will be wondering why it takes 3 hrs. to ride from mile 90 to the finish. Busted

Yes but that stop is more than FAMOUS, as everyone talks about the last stop, plus HHH is known for its outstanding rest stops..

Well you can forget about getting any sleep.  They're allowing the 100 milers etc. to start at 6.

Title: Re: HHH time already?
Post by Bud_Bent on Aug 1st, 2011, 8:48pm

The pace groups will start at 6:00. 100 mile Tandems and recumbents will start at 6:10. They're still starting all the other groups at 7:05. It will make for a nice early finish for we 100 milers, but it's not going to be very light at 6:10.

Title: Re: HHH time already?
Post by TonyWard on Aug 1st, 2011, 8:50pm

Does this mean I'll be the only bent starting at 7 since i'm planning to only do the 100k?

Title: Re: HHH time already?

You might be the ONLY RIDER at 7 once they open the flood gates.

After leaving at 6:10 for the 100 mile, who says you can't change your mind and do the 100K?  DJ

Title: Re: HHH time already?
Post by Bud_Bent on Aug 15th, 2011, 3:16pm

I noticed yesterday morning that it's pitch dark at 6:00 am. Guess I'll take my better light to HHH this year. I wonder if Lamar is serving breakfast an hour earlier than usual.

I have a spot reserved at the church and am looking forward to riding.  This will be my first HHH.  I was hoping to ride w/ Greg (we both have Carbents) but haven't heard from him in a while.  I'm hoping to finish within 5 hours to beat the heat but we'll see how it goes.  I look forward to meeting other recumbent riders.  Do you all have a corner of the church marked off for bents?

Thanks.  I do plan to use a taillight and headlight to ride from the church.  I believe it is required for cycling pre-dawn.  It makes sense they would apply that to the ride as well.

From the HH100 site:
Again, all 100 mile riders that choose to take advantage of the early start option need to remember that Texas Law requires lights on your bicycle prior to sunrise.

That would make sense. I received my paperwork from HHH and it shows the official 100 mile tandem and recumbent start time as 6:10.

It's definitely pitch black at 6AM...  given the number of times we've ridden over to the Start from the Lamar!!!!    Official sunrise itself isn't till 7:04...  Good question about breakfast at the Lamar...  I'll send Susan an email.

YES, the Lamar will be serving breakfast earlier, to accomodate those doing the 6AM start... basically, that means the lights will be coming on around 4AM instead of 5...    gawd.....

What are everyone's plans/goals/expectations for HHH this year?

I'm going down Friday with DJ. I always enjoy the bike show, though I never buy much. I'm doing the 100 mile ride again this year. It seems pretty certain that I'll be slower than usual. I'm going to try my best to get myself around the course in less than 6 hours.

Over 70 percent of my mileage this year has been 12 mile rides. It's become obvious that that's not the way to train for long rides. Last month at Goatneck was the slowest I've ever ridden that course. But if I can get myself around the HHH course in 6 hours, that will still get me in around noon, well before the worst heat of the day.

I look forward to seeing everyone there!

ha ha .......I was feeling really good before my vacation last week.  Rode just one day since then and felt awful sluggish.  Hope that it is just a product of sitting in the car too much.  I had been feeling aweful good before then so we will see.  I'm headed up around 2pm Friday afternoon to spend the night at my wife's grandmother's house in WF.  It is great having family there and always having a place to stay - not to mention homecooked meals before and after the ride.  okay - enough bragging   [smiley=pepper.gif]

I'm going to do the 100k starting at the later start time.  Hope there are still some bent's around at the start line when I'm there.  I'd like to beat the 16.9 avg I had at the Mesquite Rodeo but I guess we will see how I do with the heat.  Not having cold water to drink has really been slowing me down - I hope they are going to have lots of ice!!!!

I'm sorta with you on this although I've been getting decent rides in, last year I finished the HHH with a 22 average but I doubt I can do that this year, still can't tell what my endurance is going to be like.

Title: Re: HHH time already?

I've just about been the only bent in one of these rides so I'm excited to meet other riders.  I've got a goal of finishing a 5 hr century... hoping it could be HHH.  Looks like most of the climbing is in the first 30 miles and the rest is flat/rolling hills.  Only worry is how I'll handle chipseal roads.  I literally rattle so bad I can't see unless I lift my back forward off the seat.

I've historically averaged 20mph bike speed to the Beer Stop, with stops at 30, 50, 75, and sometimes 90 when it's really hot, so I should be at the beer stop within 6 hours after whatever start time winds up happening...  assuming I do the 100 again.  Been having more shoe discomfort issues with irritated heels from the top back of the shoe rubbing, so may need to cut off at the Gate.
