Title: Schwalbe Duranos
Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Apr 23rd, 2010, 11:37pm

Got in a set of Durano tires (1.1") that I'm going to put on both front and back on the Xstream, planning to run them at 110psi -- we'll see how they run...  The Stelvio I had on the front has several thou on it, so it'll become a folding emergency spare.  I'll do some updates here as things develop...

I recently priced these for my Corsa, but couldn't pull the trigger on $116 for the pair!  Currently running some very tough performance metro tires for $26.00 a pair, I just couldn't justify the differential for commuting.  Still thinking about a pair of continental gatorskins for about midway between the price difference.  Do update us on how you like them though.  -- Nelson.

I had to change from stevio's to conti 4000.  My tires inner cord tread separated after gettig cut by glass. But partly my fault cause i was running them a little too hot ( what's 20 psi anyway).

By the way, I put 'em on today, and went out for about 15 miles...  I like 'em!!!  We'll see what kind of difference they make on the Tuesday night popsicle ride...

Are those the wire bead? Unfortunately I was locked into to getting the narrower kevlar bead ones for the Corsa.  but will check again on the pricing.

Nelson.

The Durano is just a renamed Stelvio with a slightly different tread pattern, apparently they lost the rights to use the name which is odd

I had a pair on for 2 days then I got a pinch flat and put Jesters back on, if anyone wants my 406 and a 559 Durano pair let me know

I thought you were running kojaks. Jesters?

I had the stelvios for a short time and they seemed to roll pretty smooth.

Who loves you baby!

Well Paul based upon your positive schwalbe experience I'm going to give them a go again.  The tubes have been good to me lately, but that whole exploding ultremo situation awhile back definitely put me off.  Also got the folding variety cheaper than I could find them last month.    Mark what size is the 559 Durano you willing to part with (ie is it the folding 1.1" or the wire bead 1.35" version).

Take Care,
Nelson.

I'm getting a 2nd rear wheel (28-spoke) for WRTrail and other bumpy-type riding -- if the Durano is a 1.35", I'd like to have it if Nelson passes...

Duranos are 1.1's although Hostel does show a 1.3 lower pressure tire available

If you want to sell them Mark I wouldn't mind getting them, only the 1.1's will fit on the Corsa.

Nelson.

Looks like I'm going to need to return the pair I got, even with a bead jack these puppies are not going on my velocity fusion rims.  No way they would be field changeable.  Maybe I just got a couple off spec, but Schwalbe fails again for me.  Sticking with Michelins or Continentals for the time being. --Nelson.

well they say they are, more like 554's if you ask me!  I need the bead jack to get the even the first side on, and with the thinnest tube I had something was going to break before the I got the other sidewall on.  Never had the fusion's have an issue before, I use them in 622, 571, 559, 451, and 406 ERD sizes.  This particular wheelset has only had Stelvio's, and now the performance Metro K's mounted on it, but those would go on without tools.  Seems like Bike Tires Direct has a good return policy, will avail myself I do believe.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Oh, I thought you were running 571's. That's pretty strange; I haven't found anything to be that tight on the Velocity rims I've used. Now with Sun DS2's, it's another story.

Title: Re: Schwalbe Duranos

Back in late 2006 I build up a pair of 32 spoke, 559 velocity fusion rims with a Schmidt Generator hub, and Ultegra rear, and mounted Stelvio's on them.  I used them throughout 2007 for many long rando rides, but finally moved towards the lighter/faster original 571's with either continental gp4000, or michelin pro race 2's and battery lights for my rando riding when I became convinced the faster ride was worth the loss in robustness.  I started using the 559 wheelset on the Strada and now the Corsa for commuting, and switched to the even wider Metro K's last year after my last round of Stelvio's literally blew apart on me.  I also have pretty much quit using the schmidt hub also, and  have gotten a spare front with regular hub that I now mostly use.  The Velocity Fusions with 32 spokes have been completely bomb-proof, just need to settle on a new @28 width tire for them.

so that's the history.

Take Care,
Nelson.
