Title: Rim Check
Post by Kwijybow on Feb 27th, 2010, 5:58pm

well I was going to ride the Barcroft on Peachy Keene tomorrow, but I'll be back on the Corsa for the first time in awhile.  This past week I've noticed my front brake thumping and attributed it to a dirty rim, sometimes the dirt and rain runoff cause a buildup on the rims, But while cleaning the rim today I noticed the rim wasn't just dirty, but actually cracking and separating longitudinally along the sidewall.  Hmm less than 2000 miles on these, and with the lower pressure of my 1.5" tires I don't think they would be all that stressed.  Hoping Velocity covers the rim under warranty. I think I'm going to to take this opportunity to switch the bike back to a front disc and give up the 9, and 10 cog the capreo hub provides.  I really don't use them all that much in practice. Once I finally got the hang of adjusting the rear disc brake I kinda like it.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Velocity should replace the wheel gratis....  they did for my Thracian a couple years ago when I had a cracking problem at numerous spoke points.  However, it took 'em a while....

Yeah the rim is being covered, but the Barcroft is currently down while I wait.  If its not back from warranty after I return from spring break I may have to break down and put the 451 wheelset back on there.  I've been riding my trek the past 2 weeks, and will ride my old upright I have at my mom's next week while in Alabama.  I'm taking the opportunity to rebuild the wheel with a disc brake hub, and give up the capreo gearing on the top end (which I don't use anyway for commuting) and have dual disc brakes.  I've been missing my little bike.  Upright riding has been OK though.  Good to readjust once and awhile. Missing spring pics with the Barcroft though.

I have a 406 rear (your front) that is non-disk if you want to use it for a while. It came on the bike but I switched to the heavier wheelset because I need more exercise or something  [smiley=rolleyes.gif]
Rereading makes me think you might not be on 451s currently.

Thanks Mark!  If my wheel isn't ready after I get back from Spring Break I'll give you a call.  Only one more commute day before then so I'll survive.  My butt has mostly adjusted to being sat on again!

Take Care,
Nelson.
