Title: Replaced my SX5 with X-9 today
Post by dgholmes59 on Aug 12th, 2009, 10:01pm

Well, I got my new parts in today and just finished putting them on.  Replaced the SX5 rear derailer and twist shifters with X-9 on my Giro 20.

Had to cut some of the handlebar tape to slide the brake levers up a little on the bars to give more room for the grip shifters.  I like them better than the SX5 because the shifter itself is shorter with a longer grip.  Overall it probably has a 50% larger total grip area for your hands.  You have a regular size hand grip and slide your hand up to twist the grip for shifting.  The SX5 shifters were basically half grip and half shifter.  I like the feel of the X-9 shifters much better.

The cable that came with the 9-speed shifter was a little short by about 2 to 3 inches so I used the old cable.  It was still in good shape so no big deal.  The left microshifter cable was plenty long.  Connected the cable to the front derailleur and cut off the excess.  Worked like a charm.

Got the rear derailleur dialed in and all is working great.  The x-9 is hitting each cog a little better than the SX5 was.  It is a little quieter in all of the gears.  Really crisp and accurate shifting.  Love the way everything looks.  I cannot wait to go ride tomorrow and give it a good shakedown.

Took some pictures today.

Pros:
- Accurate shifting.  A flick of the wrist and shifts to next gear quietly without chain noise.
- Very quiet drivetrain in all gears now.  Each gear sounded like the other.  Only could hear chain running across cogs.  Very nice
- The extra grip area is more comfortable for my hands.  Instead of having a half grip and half shifter as with the SX5, the X-9 has a complete handgrip + a smaller shifter portion.  The shape of the shifter allows for a better grip when twisting.
- Cable adjuster on the grip shifter is easier to reach on the X-9.  Both the SX5 and X-9 have a find adjustment for fine tuning the rear derailleur.
- X-9 shifter has a spring assist on the grip shifter.  It shifts easier going to lower gears, but harder going to higher gears (con)

Cons:
- The X-9 shifter is harder to twist going to higher gears.  This could be a problem for some if have a weak grip or weak in a twisting motion of the hand.  Much easier going to lower gears.
- I could not get the derailleur set properly in the smallest cog (11 tooth).  It appeared the derailleur was too close to the smallest (11 tooth) cog.  No matter the adjustment of the "H" screw, it sounded like it was no completely in gear.  I installed a SS shim between the derailleur and the hanger and moved the derailleur far enough from the cog for quiet running.  Could have installed a washer on the axle as well, I guess.  All works fine now.

Overall, I am very pleased with the X-9 grip shifters and rear derailleur

Looks like a nice upgrade.

The derailer is quiet and does shift really smoothly.

My Volae Expedition came with X.9 shifters and X.9 rear derailer.

The one complaint that I have is the handgrips tend to slide down the bar away from the shift grip an 1/8" to a 1/4" after about 20 - 30 miles and I am always having to push them back up.

Well, that and the pranksters walking through the warehouse at work that adjust my brakes and shifters for me every now and again [smiley=chinscratch.gif]

I am not sure why they work their way down.  I am usually griping the shifter grip more than the hand grip portion since I am frequently shifting to deal with the constant rolling hills on my commute and really focus on pushing against the seat rather than pulling against the handlebars when going up a hill.

What did you use to adhere the grips to the bars? Hairspray or liquid soap of about any kind is traditional (spray cleaners work pretty well). Hairspray is not as readily available as it used to be.

After getting fed up with moving grips I finally put on some of the clamping kind. (Summit $12 MTB grips) and that certainly solved it.

Take Care,
Nelson.

I only recently became aware that there was such a thing. I think I'm going to try some, too.

oury mountain bike grips are what I love.  They don't move, are very tacky, and gave a tab on the end to keep your hand from sliding off.

My Giro 20 has plugs on the end of the bars that keep the grips from working off the bar.  They work pretty good.  I could not find the Summit MTB clamps you are talking about.  Where did you get them.  I would like to see a picture of what you are describing.

I got them at PCF.  I'll take a picture later.

The ODI grips are the ones I've been looking at. They require a special clamp made just for them to lock them down. There are ODI's and others on this Colorado Cyclist page (http://www.coloradocyclist.com/product/display/20556/).

Those Summit grips really look nice.  I appreciate you taking a picture.  Here are the inserts on my Giro 20 that keep the grips on the bars.

My CA2 came with those grips and Thursday almost I pulled one off.  I pushed it back on and tightened the screw.  Today it stayed on.

They came preinstalled by Hostel Shoppe and I havn't messed with them yet.  It was never an issue until recently when I started experimenting with the cockpit layout.  I lowered the stem down a couple of inches on the riser and tilted the handlebars into a less vertical and more raked back position.

The gearhead in my likes the idea of getting new grips but toys for my bike cuts into my lunch money so we'll see.

I just used soapy water.  I didn't know about the hairspray trick.  Sounds pretty good to me.
