Title: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by bikerteam on Aug 11th, 2009, 5:35am I'm riding the 500 mile 4 person team with my original two mates, Dennis and Jeremy. A DF rider (Herb) who was on Denn's team last year will be our 4th rider. No record setting pace this year. What is everyone elses intentions? Seems people have been rather hush-hush this year? |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by barlows on Aug 11th, 2009, 6:24am I'm planning to do the 500 solo. As new as I am to bents, I don't expect much of a hot pace either. It should be a good chance to get my fueling strategy in order though. Steve |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by evblazer on Aug 11th, 2009, 7:36am I'll be down volunteering or some such but no riding for me [smiley=cool.gif] |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by aikigreg on Aug 11th, 2009, 11:17am Kent Polk and I are tackling the two person 500. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by Kwijybow on Aug 11th, 2009, 11:35am entry sent for solo 500. Should be an interesting experiment! - Nelson. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by Killer Bee on Aug 11th, 2009, 2:02pm Peggy & I are each riding the 24 hour solo event. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by aikigreg on Aug 11th, 2009, 2:29pm wow - you guys are awesome, tackling the solo. With all of us doing all of this, and all the other Bent riders coming in, how the hell are we going to handle logistics? Who the hell are we going to get to crew??? |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by Kwijybow on Aug 11th, 2009, 2:57pm well for my case I'm treating it as a rando ride, so self supported. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by goatstick on Aug 11th, 2009, 3:40pm Go 'Bents! Yeah! I'm sure glad you crazies are tackling the solo rides this time and I'm not since I still have no idea what I'm doing. I figured I'd tag along with Greg this time to try to get a handle on how it's done. Speaking of... When do we get around to the racing and fueling lectures, Greg?? Having a handle on how to keep the pedals turning for that long is just the beginning. Probably a good thing bacchettabikes forum won't let me login from home to join in on all the fun there. Especially with JS coaxing us tx boys to misbehave. I guess he's expecting Peggy and Shellene to behave. Having never met them, I have no idea but they are anything like most of the girls that ride with us, that would certainly be the bigger mistake. BTW, Gary (Corsa) and I (and ~10 other df riders from our group) are coming up for HHH. We're planning on trying to hook up with you guys for the recumbent start and a few of us are planning to ride the TTTT course the next day. Is there any chance we could get together to meet you rbent folk and talk actual racing then? Maybe check out the pit area and get an idea of how things are supposed to work? Think I could bring my 400 gal stock tank up for the TTTT? We don't have enough water left in S. Tx to fill it. Figure it might get a little use up there. Jump in after every lap. |

Hey, the non-competing Me, I'll be volunteering, although I'm strangely tempted by the 6 hour... even on the SXP... but I'm also thinking the exploratory ride on the 22nd will beat that notion out of me... ;) |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by Killer Bee on Aug 11th, 2009, 4:13pm Well Peggy & I have secured our crew-our coach(William Pruett ,whom some have met during our Goatneck-Cleburne 213k death ride this Saturday) has generously accepted the role(which is huge, managing 2 separate riders in a 24 hour event). Tracking nutrition, laps, coaching ,hydration, etc... kinda important stuff. All we have to do is pedal, not worry about logistics. Hats off to Nelson for not only riding the 500 solo,BUT crewing for himself. I'm sure I'll be getting lapped ,but that's OK, I'll find my pace & keep pedaling. 3 female recumbents entered for the TT's(Peggy, Shellene, & SK), very cool. Go ladies. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Aug 11th, 2009, 5:10pm Steve / Peggy, do you have anything prearranged with Plano Cycling for supply donations for this year? |

Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by aikigreg on Aug 11th, 2009, 5:17pm I guess I'm gonna need to buy one of those big tents. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by bikerteam on Aug 11th, 2009, 6:02pm What out of state B riders are coming, and what events are the participating in? Steve, any word on Larry Ide, and if he'll be on one of JS bikes? |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by barlows on Aug 11th, 2009, 6:58pm Greg, I've got a big tent with a screenroom for gear. Remind me and we can have a look to see if it will work. Steve |

No Larry Ide this year(too bad). Last I heard, he will be on a CA ,competing in the Ultra Cup full time next year. He's been tearing up some training rides this year, look out next year. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Aug 25th, 2009, 3:51pm Just curious, is anyone planning to enter the 6-hour competition this year, recumbent-wise? I'm strangely tempted, and think I could get four laps in... even in the potential heat of midday... |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by Kwijybow on Aug 25th, 2009, 4:10pm You know you want too! [smiley=dbanana.gif] |

Paul - considering your time on the course, you should tackle the 6 hour. You would certainly be setting a high standard for any type of bike. Everyone - have you seen the rider list that Dan posted? Other than our small bent family entered, I don't know anyone? Hopefully on the next post, he'll identify where they are from. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by Kwijybow on Aug 26th, 2009, 8:53am Hi Ray, You know Gary Gottlieb and Bob Riggs, I imagine there will be a lot more entries the next posting. Take Care, Nelson. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by goatstick on Aug 26th, 2009, 10:14pm BTW, can someone point me at the latest route sheet for the TTTT? We want to take a look at it coming back from HHH on Sunday. Thanks |

Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by barlows on Sep 8th, 2009, 6:04pm Has anyone worked out their pit plan yet? I'm riding the 500, and should be fairly self-sufficient for the most part, but would love to have some help to refill bottles and camelbak bladders while I'm out on course. Problem is, I don't know who to ask. Should I just wait until I get there and flag down one of the volunteers? I haven't done this before, so the details are an unknown at this point. Thanks, Steve |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by power_bent on Sep 8th, 2009, 6:50pm Hey Barlows, I will be there to help. Where do we get the ice and water??? |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Sep 8th, 2009, 10:55pm I like the idea of having "RBENT Central" like we've basically done the last couple of years, if we can arrange it. I believe I'm getting an overhead from PCF, and having a semi-centralized area for nutritional stuff, etc. is handy -- plus, it just adds to the general conversational abilities! For those who have specific foodstuffs for themselves, we could perhaps have some specific tables set up, as well as a general water/food/whatever area. My particular event doesn't start until Saturday midday, but I'll be down there on Friday to do my volunteer shift, then tent camping that night. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by goatstick on Sep 8th, 2009, 11:26pm Would be nice to help fund and help supply such an effort also. Maybe give us an idea of what to bring? Hoping Greg gets the thumbs up though as I probably won't make it if he has to drop out. I'm likely not mentally prepared to do a solo right now. |

I guess I just assumed we were on our own for ice and water. I figured I would bring my 48 quart cooler full of ice and water, and have 6 or 8 bottles in there made up. I'll have all the mixings already made up into baggies so it should be pretty simple to resupply. Had an object lesson in backup plans tonight. Got on the bike to leave the house to commute into work. Headlight no workie. Messed with the battery wiring a little, it comes on, then right back off. The connector came unsoldered on me. Bummer, I had loaned out my backup light over a year ago and never got it back. Oh well, better to find this out now than at 8 pm on the 24th. |

There have been a few riders (none of US) that have had their lights stop working at inopportune times during the TTTT... One GDB club rider had his go out at the lime plant, and he essentially rode the next 16 miles in the dark... and another had it go out while going 35 mph down the final hill... Kent, if Greg can't go, there's the possibility that we can convince Sandy Earl (crew chief for RAAM Team RANS, and previous TTTT participant) to come down, and do a mixed 2-person run with you... Don't give up the ship just yet.... She's consideringi it... |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by aikigreg on Sep 9th, 2009, 8:13am That's awesome, Paul. Steve, If I end up not being able to go then you can use my main light set. And otherwise I have a heavy but bright set (which you've seen me use) that I could loan you. |

[smiley=jawdrop.gif] [/quote] Wow, Peggy & I run with our main lights(Dinotte 400-Li), & then we have skewer mount lights as back-up. I don't count our helmets lights as they don't provide much light(but better than nothing, not much) . I've seen experienced riders have problems with no back up on LSR rides. So have a plan A, Plan B ,& plan C. Murphy's law applies. |

It would be fabulous just to meet her at TTTT. She ought to go regardless, but if Mr Greg can't ride, I'd certainly be interested. Maybe she has some thoughts on how to deal with my gastric challenges too. That's I think my primary issue and why I'm not prepared to do a solo event just yet. have to get a better handle on things first. |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by barlows on Sep 9th, 2009, 2:50pm Grego, thanks for the offer on the light set. You keep that for your use though, I'm pulling for you to be able to ride. I've got some backup stuff, just didn't have it on the bike and ready. Yesterday was just a timely reminder for me. Kent, I've been through some gastric issues lately as well. I've learned quite a bit from it (still much to learn though). Let me know if I might be able to help. Steve |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by aikigreg on Sep 9th, 2009, 3:22pm Well, just got back form the doc.. GAME ON! I'm not going to be as prepared as I'd like because while I'm riding right now, I can't climb because of the screw sticking out, but I'll be having the surgery Monday and back on the bike Wed/Thursday with the stitches, and will have them out the week of the TT. I will bring my backup lights anyway. The one thing I'd LOVE to have is some hot water for the nights to make some hot soup. I'll bring the coleman again. Anyone up for my wife's Turkey spaghetti again? I'll bring pasta and rice since I have to avoid wheat. |

I spent the past weekend with some serious paddlers (Texas Water Safari - multiday racers), it seems that they use Prilosec as part of their race preparation. Something to consider (I'm going to try it the weekend prior to the TT, otherwise I'll be chewing Rolaids for 500 miles). |

Atta Boy! Or did that threat of having me traded off to the top female ultra team get your panties in a twist? :^) I'm still not back up to where I was last spring in power output either, but I'm faster and ride with less foot stress on the new bike so hopefully it'll even out a bit. I figure we take it easy and I'll use it as a good learning experience. Train hard this winter and come out of the gate hard next spring. Ok? BTW, pasta is normally made of wheat. Or do you mean rice pasta? I never found a decent rice pasta to suite me once I discovered I was allergic to gluten, so pasta is pretty off the menu for me. That's what led to my problem at HHH - All the restaurants were serving pasta and almost nothing else so I ended up at KFC eating some burnt cardboard strips (and some cooked rice I brought) the night before which ended up with a ticking time bomb in my gut the next day at HHH. Luckily I made it past the finish line and to the proper services before the fuse burnt down. barlows: My gastric problems are that most carbs cyclists eat other than oats and fruit are nixed so I've had a bit of a difficult time trying to find something that works well for rides much longer than a double metric. |

Right on, that's great news(not that you're coming off surgery),but you'll be there to ride. Very cool. Who said something about gastric problems? So Bud is riding at the TT's then? [smiley=evil.gif] |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by aikigreg on Sep 9th, 2009, 6:51pm No Kent I thought I'd bring pasta for the rest of the crew, and rice for the two of us. And hey, if you'd rather have a MUCH better rider than me, (i.e. Sandy) I'd be thriled to crew for the two of you. She's awesome. I hope she comes down anyway and does something - that way team pink can take the field! We just gotta get you that pink |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by goatstick on Sep 9th, 2009, 9:25pm Ok. I'll bring some rice pudding also. Leave out the raisins but will sprinkle lots of cinnamon on top so it'll look pretty... How about magenta tights? You probably can't find a pink leotard that would fit me. Think Sandy would let me wear magenta for her team? :^) And looks like I have a ride but the CA2 will have to share the back of the van with a pretty, young harp. Some guys have all the luck... |
Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by Killer Bee on Sep 9th, 2009, 10:04pm Greg, you know where I want to go with all of this talk about pink, don't you? Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by Kwijybow on Sep 10th, 2009, 10:16am Good Deal Greg! Glad you can race! As far as lights I will be running the same Fenix flashlights that have served me well everyday on the commute to work, and for every night brevet for the last couple of years. These things have proven very reliable. Seems every 6 months or so I have to clean the contacts if they act a little reluctant, but after that they truck along again. I really like not having any wiring to mess with, and a couple hose clamps make for a very secure mounting system. I will be running one on the OAB, and one on the skewer mount. The only thing that tempts me away sometimes is the very nice new generation of LED generator lights. My generator hubs are all gathering dust, but I have yet to work up to selling them off. Take Care, Nelson. |

Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Sep 16th, 2009, 5:25pm Yeah, except Steve is gonna carry one or the other on his back (or front) as he does his laps, so he can switch off whenever he feels like it.... [smiley=tongue.gif] |

Good memory Greg. I alternated laps on the 4 person 500 mile race between my Ti Aero and the custom Ti Seven w/aero bars. If I remember correctly, my avg. speed was at least 1mph faster on the bent, and my max speed was definately higher, while avg. heart rate was lower. UMCA published us that year. This year I'm thinking of switching between, or including in the mix, my new 29'r Fisher MTB, especially if it keeps raining [smiley=vrolijk_1.gif] |

Title: Re: TTTT - Who's Coming Post by barlows on Sep 17th, 2009, 4:05am Haha, that was Driscoll being funny. I mentioned to him that I'd bring along my DF in case the 'bent caught fire some time during the ride. He said "Great, we'll give you your own category!" I thought he was kidding... I still like my DF, but things would have to go pretty wrong for me to get it out at the TT. Although, since I'm the only one currently in that group, maybe just finishing would get me RQ.
