Title: Rbent Picnic, second try? Post by aikigreg on Aug 10th, 2009, 7:57pm Normally I host a picnic for everyone with paces and distances for all skill levels, but too many people complained and dithered about times even though I gave a wide range of dates. So I thought I'd try again. These have been some of the best times I've ever had on an off a bike, and we have so many new members, that it'd be great to get together. The format in the past has been a potluck, with my wife and I providing the burgers and everyone else bringing something to go along with it. I have a nice patio area in my apartment complex with a pool, sand volleyball, billiards, a movie theater, and hot tub. Any interest in a fall picnic, say Sunday, October 4th? We can user my Big Cow Bent Loop, and I can make modifications for every distance desired as well as difficulty level. We can go from nuthin but flat or head for the hills. Short distance riders would be able to stay on paths 90% of the time, with the extra being bike lanes. We could do something like: 16-20 milers: Scenic trails with a waterfall and bridge. A small extra distance would put you at a remote-controlled airfield with nice views of Benbrook lake and anyone flying their planes. Out and back and flat as a pancake 35 miles. All of Dutch Branch Park with the above scenery. This out and back ends at a conveneience store - Up A Creek Sports, which is an....interesting place to say the least. One short 18% hill and some rollers. Big Cow Bent Loop - approx 50 miles. Adds to the above with good hills halfway through with a couple downhills guaranteed to let you see 40mph if you like. Have seen deer and such and of course the 15 foot tall cow. Big Cow Bent Loop - Reverse - same route but you ride the interesting portion backwards, giving you a monster of a hill to climb. The convenience store also rides along this route. Bigger - we could possibly go all the way to Aledo and back - the possibilities are unlimited. We could do a fast 100k or more, I leave it up to the participants. I will design the route if there is interest. |
Title: Re: Rbent Picnic, second try? Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Aug 10th, 2009, 11:02pm Excellent, consider the date set! Those that can, can, those that can't..... With a group as spread out and varied as we are, it's the only way to do it... Having distance/speed options is obviously important to help everybody get in some riding!!! The picnic/potluck has always had great food, too!!!! Good on ya, Greg (and Alexis)...! |

Title: Re: Rbent Picnic, second try? Post by Pedalin` Peggy on Aug 19th, 2009, 8:48am Steve and I are riding a 400k on Saturday Oct.3, so we probably will not make the ride but I would like to come over for lunch. Depending on how we feel when we are done on Saturday. Pedlalin Peggy |
Title: Re: Rbent Picnic, second try? Post by irodguy on Aug 19th, 2009, 12:11pm I should be able to make that. I will bring my chocolate chip cookies again. Let me know if you want anything else. Maybe cucumber salad or an orzo salad? Or a flourless chocolate cake. Just let me know. |
Title: Re: Rbent Picnic, second try? Post by FlyingLaZBoy on Sep 11th, 2009, 11:42am Greg / Alexis -- Are we "officially" set for this, Oct. 4th? Unfortunately, GDB is having their fall bash that same morning, but I'm more into the RBENT festivities.... |

Title: Re: Rbent Picnic, second try? Post by AustinSkater on Sep 12th, 2009, 6:53am I've got a 400k on Saturday, so if the ride starts late enough I may be interested in a 100k recovery ride, otherwise I'll just sleep 'till it's time to eat. [smiley=yawn.gif] |
Title: Re: Rbent Picnic, second try? Post by Killer Bee on Sep 12th, 2009, 4:37pm Yep, Peggy & I are riding the same 400k the as well. I wouldn't count on us being at the picnic, sorry. [smiley=headbang.gif] |
Title: Re: Rbent Picnic, second try? Post by AustinSkater on Sep 12th, 2009, 7:22pm The good thing is, the 400k is in Greenville, so it's a short drive home afterwards. Last year I finished that one in just over 17 hours (drafting on Shellene and Mark M often), it's not that hard of a route. I think the two of you should finish in time to get some sleep, and then make a token appearance at the picnic. |

Or an even better idea... go DIRECTLY to Greg's after the ride, shower and sleep THERE without detouring back to Frisco!!!!!!! Bet he could put you up! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |
Title: Re: Rbent Picnic, second try? Post by aikigreg on Sep 13th, 2009, 11:02am If you think you'd be up for it, that'd be no problem. Have an extra bedroom and sleeping bags. But after a 400k I'd be too tired to do ANYTHING. |
