Title: TTT volunteering.
Post by Kwijybow on Aug 6th, 2009, 12:12am

It seems I might sorta be doing some of the TTT course marking.  Currently it looks like we might be able to get some
paint and reflective bead mix donated from Stripe-a-zone.com if we take a couple of re-sealable paint containers by.
I am working on the details, but the place is located in Grand Prarie, and will be difficult for me to arrange a pick up.
Once I know more, is there someone who lives close that might be able to do the actual pickup.  One weekend before the race I would arrange to pick up the paint and then go stencil at the course.  If things come together it might even be the 22nd.

Has anybody been involved with event marking before, I'm sorta assuming that TxDot and the County might have a word or two to say about painting something on their roadway.  I was also thinking about three stencils per turn.  One some 100 yards before, then at the turn, and then after the turn to indicate you are on the course.

Thanks,
Nelson.

I can pick it up. I'm close to Grand Prairie (as long as we're talking August; I'll be moving to Crowley shortly after that).

I don't think GDB has ever even bothered with TxDOT for the Lancaster rally...  just go out there and paint arrows at the turns!!!

Bud thanks so much for volunteering to pick up.  I will be in touch when I know more.  Its a 50 mile drive for me.
And Paul I think you are correct.  I am currently planning to wait until the weekend before the race to mark the course, and then
go back the Sunday after and paint over the marks.  We are actually going to try to put down paint with reflective beads in it, so the markings should be very visible.

Here are my current thoughts:

Stencil1   Stencil2
---------- ---------
   TT      (arrow)

but laid close together.

I would only need 2 stencils  I was thinking 6" high letters and a directional
arrow.  That is not so big that I think somebody will get irate, but should be
big enough for a cyclist to see.

here is the web address for Stripe-A-Zone

Take Care,
Nelson.

Right on, I say paint away. At the rate Tx-Dot is destroying roads, the paint will be covered up by chip seal in no time any way.

Is the course on County roads or state highways?
Probably county roads and if that is correct Somervell County officials would appreciate being advised--I can put you in touch with someone if you want.  Seems like that would be a great goodwill gesture.

I understand that somone had a ride here a few years ago and they marked up the county roads pretty good.  I saw the signs for several years. The ride was for experienced riders but the signs were such as--in front of a cattle guard --cattle guard ahead--walk your bike (not needed I ride over it all the time), or you can ride your bike across this cattle guard--hill ahead--, nice scenic spot here---look through the trees  at the river on the left arrows pointing--etc.,turn right or left plus several arrows.

By the way we have 2 weekly newspapers and a bikeshop and I imagine that they all would be receptive to getting the word out about the more than usual bicycle traffic. Sherriff's office probably could help too.

Frank,  most of the roads appear to be county roads. The only state highways would be 56 & 144.  The other roads include: CR 200 ,Brazos Point Rd., &  FM 199,

comments welcome.  I'm thinking I need to increase the size of the arrow.

Take Care,
Nelson

I'd say yes...  Get on your bike, and see how visible (or not) it is, and do the same thing at night...

Just wanted to throw a quick shout out there.  Powerbent called me today to offer his services for us during the Texas Time Trials.  I know we could use more.  With so many of us who are doing this crazy thing, we need people around to tell us to eat, drink, and basically listen to us whine and complain the whole night.  Help us find stuff we need, fill water bottles, and a lot of thankless jobs.   It can always be done with little support, but I've been amazed at how much difference the "Pit Crew" makes.

If you're interested, I'm sure we can use you.  if not, the Time Trial folks themselves are always in need of volunteers.  It would be great for the bent community to get out there and be seen helping out.  How about it?
