Title: Heard on a ride
Post by Opus the Poet on Jul 25th, 2009, 10:07pm

Well, the Richardson cop did say I was an idiot magnet when I was riding home from working in Farmer's Branch back in 2001. Both ways to a church function tonight I was told I should be riding on the sidewalk by someone in a pickup truck or SUV. The ride is only 3.55 miles each way, so how much could I be holding anyone up?

They were only passing on the wisdom their Daddy passed on to them.  You should also be riding against the traffic so if someone is about to hit you, you can leap off the bike to safety.

And don't forget, you should always WALK your bike across intersections.

The best thing I heard on a ride lately was after I decided to ride with a flag from Sound/Wind - a motorist slowed down, rolled down the window and stated, "I can REALLY see you now."  Methinks it's worth the extra drag.

People have always seemed to get confused about that. The standard accepted advise has always been to walk against traffic, but ride with it. But, you hear plenty of people say otherwise.

I guess it's like the feed a cold and starve a fever thing. As long as there is more than one choice, people are going to mix it up.

See that leaves out jogging though. Is jogging in between riding and walking so you just jog whichever way you want  [smiley=huh.gif]

That is the way they roll in flower mound. Down old settlers yesterday there were joggers in both the southbound and northbound outside lanes all heading north.  ::)

And there was a guy walking towards me ON the center yellow divider line dashes on the Katy Trail last week, totally zoned out to his earphones, head down...  I almost hit him...

The cringe factor was pretty high when I was headed down 15th St. in Plano, near Coit, and saw an elderly woman riding in the right lane AGAINST TRAFFIC, at about 6mph. Just kind of weaving along on her cruiser bike, looking pretty oblivious. No helmet, just a "coolie" hat.

I expected to hear about her on the evening news.

Naw.. That kind does not get hit, they cause others to swerve and have an accident while they ride off oblivious.

She certainly has the Lord on her side. That's for sure.
