Title: Upcoming LSR Populaire's
Post by Killer Bee on Jul 16th, 2009, 3:56pm

For those that are interested , The Lone Star Randonneurs have 3 separate upcoming rides(Popularies) that range in distances from 100k-160k(62+-100 miles).

These rides are open to all riders, they do not require membership. This is a great way top get introduced to the world of randoneuring.  The rides start in Princeton, Celina, & Plano. The dates are 8/2, 8/9, & 8/16.

Here's a link to the LSR website: http://lonestarrandon.tripod.com/RideCalendar/2009/brevets.html

The first of these rides is this coming Sunday, so let me bump this thread to the top. I had planned on going fishing Sunday, but since the water at my favorite crappie spot is probably the color of chocolate milk right now, I may consider riding. There are usually some very slow riders on these populaires, so don't feel you have to be a speedster to ride. From George Elizondo on the LSR google group:

Beanstalk Metric Century – RUSA Populaire
Sunday 08/2/08, 8:00 AM start

Join us this Sunday, August 2, 2009 for the first in a series of RUSA
populairs in memory of cyclist and Hotter-N-Hell (HHH) fanatic Mark
Sachnik. The next three Sunday's will feature a different ride of 62
km or longer and all riders are welcome. You need not be a member of
RUSA or LSR to ride. There are no entry fees. These rides are FREE.

This Sunday, August 2nd, we will roll out of Princeton for the
Beanstalk Metric Century. Ride start at 8:00 AM from the parking lot
at the corner of N 2nd Street and E College Ave across from Lacy
Elementary School in Princeton, TX. Bring a friend! This is an
excellent opportunity to introduce someone to LSR, the sport of
randonneuring and possibly test the long distance waters for some.

The main requirements for this ride are:
1. Sign the waiver
2. Wear a helmet
3. Carry a control card, get it "validated" at the turnaround and turn
it in at the finish.
In exchange for the above, ride insurance is provided.

There are no official ride/pace leaders. Ride at your own pace or with
a group. There is no formal SAG support and no rest stops - you may
choose to purchase food/drinks at stores along the route. The ride is
non-competitive and all finishers from first to last are given equal
recognition.

Please RSVP, even if tentative, so that we have enough control cards
for everyone. Hope to see ya there!

The Rides:
Sunday, August 2, 2009, 8:00AM   Beanstalk (100 km - 62 mi)
Sunday, August 9, 2009, 8:00AM   Bobcat Bite (103 km - 64 mi)
Sunday, August 16, 2009, 8:00AM   Marko Polo (170.6 km - 106 mi)

Bud, thanks for posting that information, I was going to, but I never got a round tuit.

Shellene and I won't be at the one on Sunday, but should be at the other two, both of which have links to rbent riders.  Bobcat Bites was designed by Killer Bee.  Marko Polo has special meaning to me; it was my first Populaire and I've been hooked ever since.

Sounds like fun.  I might can do this, and I'd love to see Steve-O and Peggy-O.

FYI about the Bobcat Populaire(8/9), there has been some road construction.  There are 2 detours(#1-shortly after the Howe control & #2-prior to the Tioga control). The route is now 66.30 miles.

I have sent revised cue sheet to Sharon Stevens & Dan Driscoll.

Yes, Peggy & I plan on riding Sunday morning.

[smiley=dbanana.gif] Count me in.  Couple of newbie questions though:

To whom do you RSVP, the "info@lonestarrandon.org" address?
Do we need to bring the waiver or will there be waivers there to sign?
How early do you guys usually show up?  I'd like to meet some of you RBENT legends before you leave me. :'( ;D
Can you recommend a way to carry/view the route maps (which I assume are provided)?

Thanks,
Dan

Email George Elizondo at gre099@gmail.com to rsvp. There will be waiver forms there. Everyone seems to have their own way of carrying cue sheets. I wouldn't worry about it on this ride; just check out what others do while you're there. I usually get there a half hour before the ride start.

Dan, no, the ride leader will have the waiver available & ready for you to sign prior to the ride at the Populaire. Populaires vary in size from 15 to 30+(it just depends on the location, weather & what rides the other randonneurs have done the day before the Poulaire, & how much interest there is in randonneuring).

Peggy & I normally show up 45 minutes prior to the start. AND the LSR group is PROMPT. If the ride starts at 8:00, you can almost bet on rolling at 8:00.

Cue sheet holders pose an interesting dilemma for 'bents. Some riders mount cue sheet holders on their bars, some use the "clip" type handlebar holders, it's an individual preference. Peggy & I have our own system. Maybe some others can give you advice on what cue sheet holders they use?

It's really easy. You're given a cue sheet , a permanent card which you get signed/with receipt at the controls & time signed(usually a convenience store) , onto to the next control. That's pretty much it.

I hope that helps.

I'm probably in for Sunday, and may be bringing a newbie DF friend, the woman who I met last week that started commuting after reading the DMN article...

I used a cue sheet on my first brevet, and haven't carried one since (I usually ride with someone who has one).  I would recommend two things before each ride:

1.  Go to the LSR website and preview the cue sheet in advance, some routes are easier than others (some route creators love turns more than others).
2.  Go to Bikely and see if you can find the route, if you can't find it create it.  I usually make a copy from the latest cue sheet.  This helps me remember some of the turns.

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Bean-Stalk

If you think you're going to be riding alone, carry a cue sheet in a ziplock bag, otherwise it will rain.

BTW, full disclaimer, I use a Garmin Edge 305 when riding.

Have fun this Sunday, I'll be sitting in a jet plane, but would rather be riding.

Going to my first rando event I needed a cue holder so I stole a $1 Walmart pencil case from my daughter, and attached a X-files ID badge lanyard that I found in a kitchen drawer.  I still use it 3 years later.  I put the Cue in a plastic bag inside the case so it won't rain.

Take Care,

Back before I retired my setup was as so.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_GIFgiCQnK-8/SXY1puzn1sI/AAAAAAAAAK4/OYZoyetCU3c/s800/BrevetGear.JPG
The brevet bag I used had a map sheet pocket in the front and I could attach the bag to a fanny pack I kept to the side. When I was riding I usually pulled it up so it wasn't around my waste but a bit higher. If you carry it on your person you need to keep it in something like a ziplock to keep it intact.
This setup is probably unique to me as the preying mantis bars don't leave alot (any) room for anything mounted to the bike. Sometimes I'd also ride with a garmin etrex with the map already loaded   [smiley=yawn.gif]
Probably far more then you need to carry on the bike.  [smiley=tongue.gif]

Dan, will you be riding the V3?  I purchased a couple of map clips from RBM, put them on the SXP handlebar, and just attached a ziplock bag with the cue sheet in it.  Doesn't contact my knees, and doesn't flap around much.  Should work for you on the V3.

However, I also get the cue info in advance, and reprint it in size 14 font, for readability....   ;)

Or, just ride the route a bunch of times(like I have beanstalk and Bobcat) & that resolves the issue of a cue sheet or holder.

V3?  In my dreams.  I have an Actionbent, the cast iron model with the optional 40psi tires, custom untruable wheels and bonus safety feature of an extremely loud drive line!  It's kinda like the Harley-Davidson loud pipe theory.  People hear me coming and get out of the way! :o I have to say it's never given me any trouble though, and pushing all this weight should help for when I pick up a nice bike.

I see Sharon Stevens is planning to finish BeanStalk, then drive to Celina to do Bobcat that same afternoon....   Pettys, are you planning to join her?   I'm tempted, but I will be hanging with a couple potentially more casual riders for BeanStalk, and may not be able to make a planned Bobcat start time...
