Title: Sunscreen Article
Post by Kwijybow on May 29th, 2009, 11:09am

Hey Bud I was looking (unsucessfully) for your suncreen write up, you wouldn't mind reposting it would you?

Take Care,
Nelson.

Sure, Nelson. There was a study done last year that tested almost a thousand different sunscreen products, and rated them for safety and effectiveness. While they're busy protecting your skin from the sun, some of them contain chemicals that may be more harmful to you than the sun. It's caused some of the major brands to change their formula. You can view the study and check your favorite sunscreen here (http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/sunscreens2008/summary.php). Keep in mind that not all products by the same maker rate the same. Strangely, the Neutrogena for Sensitive Skin that I changed to because it rated well on the list, is no longer on the list at all.  [smiley=shrug.gif]

Bud - are you still using Neutrogena for Sensitive Skin?  What's your recommendations, based on experience?

Ray,

I like the Neutrogena for Sensitive Skin. I have no idea why it's not on the list (either good or bad) any more. I liked the Jason (http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Cosmetics-Sunbrellas-Active-Bottles/dp/B001EWEP18/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=grocery&qid=1243629693&sr=8-2) even better, though. It was a bit pricy before, but it's cheap enough now that I may go back to it.

Does anyone out there get a red rash on their legs--shins and just above the knees when riding.  It seems that I've developed this rash and it itches like crazy.  I don't have to get a sunburn --I use Water Babies SPF 50--but the heat seems to cause the rash.  If so, what have you done to either prevent it or get rid of it?

Yes, I get it underneath my shorts when the weather warms up.  It's maddening sometimes.  I haven't found anything to do for it other than wait for it to go away, which takes hours post-ride.

Thanks for re-posting that, Bud... I had been thinking about sunscreen lotions recently, and how well or poorly they work, as well as what is actually getting absorbed into your skin....

Danged if you do, danged if you dassn't...    :( [smiley=shrug.gif]

Thanks Bud!  Will look for some of the better ones this weekend.  If anybody finds a good source let us know.  The neighborhood walmart near my house was devoid of anything but the non-recommended varieties. >:(

I get the rash too, sometimes takes hours or up tp a day to fade.

Every sunscreen I have tried, except for Neutrogena "Ultra Sheer" SPF 85, has made me break out in an ichy rash. However, this product is on the "high hazard" list, due to it's Oxybenzone content.

I've been experimenting with the rash.  I found, so far, that Benadryl cream will stop the itching and makes the rash disappear in about 4 hoursl. Makes me think that its an allergic reaction to the sun and not exertion.  Still on the hunt for a cure.

The rash from the shorts band is common.  If it is the band on your shorts causing it, you can turn up the hem so the tacky stuff isn't touching your skin.   Personally, I'm using the Champion running shorts which are very long and have caused me no trouble since they do not have any of the tacky stuff.

If it is the sun causing the rash, you might consider A) longer shorts, B) leg coolers.  I have some leg coolers and they work fine for me, but I don't wear them unless I'm on a ride where I will not have time to reapply sunscreen.

One of our DF rider friends has an alergy on his legs for a few months each year.  He applies calamin lotion before applying sunscreen during those months.  I don't know if that is an advisable thing to do or not, but it does work for him.

Dunno about Di, but for me it's from the band of the shorts and 8 inches up my leg, which is already covered!  I'm going to try tights on the hotter days this year and see if it helps..

My legs get pretty overheated hauling the load I force on em and I have found I get alot of red with normal cycling shorts when it turns on above 50 degrees or so. UA Heatgear shorts have worked well for me on every 200k I've done with them, minus the not putting sunscreen where they don't cover issue. I actually have a pair of the full length heat gear leggings that I was thinking I should have tried out last friday but had forgotten or perhaps didn't want to be seen in.  Or maybe on the RBent Saturday Ride, no probably would have scared that DF rider away :-[
I had tried them on a few shorter rides and they didn't seem to overheat me though I don't know if they kept me alot cooler. Of course riding around with white tights even with a pair of normal baggy shorts over them might be something that takes a while to get used to.
