Title: One last 'Bent Event announcement...
Post by mlibrik on Apr 13th, 2009, 2:41pm

Some last update stuff about the 'Bent Event...

We'll definitely have some Velomobiles and kinetic sculpture on hand, as well as the XL Bacchetta carbon Aero.  Rans will be on-site, and they'll bring a couple of Trizards.  They are also bringing an X-Stream LWB low-racer, however, if there is a strong demand for a Seavo then I can probably get them to switch back to bringing that.  I'm just figuring there will be more general interest in a $2500 bike than a $6000 one.

Rides will go out at 11AM if anyone can make it.  If you are riding into town for the MS150, come on up to Koenig and Lamar after your post-ride brewski.

Bands and food are lined up, so come and eat.

As I offered before, if anyone can coordinate a carpooling effort, I'll contribute to their transportation costs.

Please come and bring your bikes/trikes.

More information about the event can be found at:

I'd like to attend this, but want to carpool with someone with a pickup who could put my SXP in the back along with their bike....   Mike's offering to help with expenses (gas, I assume), anybody else want to head down there?  Sounds like a fun day trip!!!!!

That would be a fun thing to go to, if I had a ride ::)

It's only a double century down and a double back. :^)  Does anyone know if the I35 access road is rideable all the way between Waco and Salado? I've ridden as far north as Salado and I thought it went through up to Waco but someone told me they thought it didn't go all the way. There's a ~1 mile stretch southbound near Buda that doesn't go through. If you aren't watching and and/or don't know about it, the access road just dumps you out onto I35 with no warning. (done that)

Unless I get a pad and cover for the seat on the Fusion, there's no way I'm going to ride this. The skin on my tailbone would be gone by FM 308. The ride to Waco was nice when I did it on the Stratus but I was going somewhere else that year...

Phew. Too many turns for me. I'd really get lost with that route sheet :^)  I was thinking about taking the 317 route but when we went up to visit my sister up that way not long ago, there was far more traffic on 317, etc. than on the I35 access road and the road surface was worse. When I rode up to Salado from Helotes last summer the only place that was dicey was riding through the Pflugerville/Round Rock area. That area has built up so quickly with no regard for cyclists that I haven't found a really decent way to get through there. The access road north of Georgetown was almost vacant though. Yes, there's the I35 debris and noise, but much of the time the access road is far enough away that you can shut it out.

My daughter and I are planning on riding to Long Island starting the last of May and I was hoping to head up through NE TX somewhat along Hwy79 and maybe try to talk some of you into riding a bit with us but it looks like the best route would run us back east again through Louisiana (ugh) to the Natchez Trace and up from there to catch the TransAmerica in Kentucky. Hopefully we can figure out how to bypass some of the more painful memories of riding through East Texas and Louisiana this time.

Would like to meet some of you great riders from way up North there at Mike's place on Sunday, but I can certainly understand the difficulty. It's a long ways to get from South/Central Texas to anywhere else.

If it helps, I have a route from the LSR group that is Rockwall to Texarkana, roughly 200 miles one way.  I rode it 100 miles to Lake Cypress Springs last TGiving.

Anyone who seriously wants to ride down from Dallas can probably sleep Saturday night in the same backyard as the guy from Rans is planning to sleep in.  I expect he'd be delighted to see some smelly XP riders.

This yard I've mentioned belongs to my assistant (who doesn't realize that I'm suggesting that more people sleep at his place) who recently completed his first double century and then learned about "recovery" and its many aspects.  He'd be pretty sympathetic, I expect.

Maybe bring a few bucks to contribute to the house grocery fund if you really plan on doing this.  Otherwise, I'll cough up for some gas money.  I'd really like this to be a statewide rally.

Mike, I don't mean to derail your thread again, but have your assistant check out this thread on cherry juice...  http://209.62.36.18/~spinnerb/rbent/YaBB.pl?num=1223327128/14#14

I'm definitely not riding the SXP down to Austin, but am still hoping to carpool with someone for a day trip.

But why?  It isn't all that interesting as bike shops go.  But then I was one of those legions of people who showed up at our local Triathletes' shop, Austin Tri-Cyclist, asking to see the tricycles.  Big disappointment!

Just to let folks know, the Fusion rides nicely on a standard bike rack after I take off the Honkin' Huge Taillighttm. I put it on the front rack on the DART bus the other day and besides the damage to the HHTtm it rode fine. The HHTtm needs a stiffer bracket to work in the "hanging off the left" motorcycle position. The HHTtm is sitting on the kitchen table while I build either a better bracket or get the material I need to build the hardshell cargo carriers. [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Can't make the trip after all, even with carpooling.  Tasks have been assigned for Sunday, and I have a job interview on Monday (  [smiley=thumbsup.gif] ) that requires some background investigating...

Opus, I'd like to go check out the velos.  I have a Ranger with a bar in the back to mount the forks for two bikes.  What's the measurement between your dropouts?  I need to know if I need to move the bar forward to keep your back tire from riding on the ground behind us.  :o  Let me know if you still want to go and we can work out the details.

Still interested. (972)530-9626

Wheelbase on the Fusion (which is what I think you were asking) is 49 1/2"

Dropouts are 100mm front and 135 rear if that was what you were asking.

Yeah, no problems with the wheelbase.  Tried to call you.  (469) 396-3785.

I didn't see any of you there! We arrived late from pushing a 18mph headwind (for almost 100 miles) and one of our group just couldn't push that headwind at speed. I'm riding back tomorrow with Clark who rode my pa trike up to make sure he gets home ok, then I'm riding back to Austin, then riding to Waco with my daughter on Tuesday. I figure everyone will be busy during the week, but as I'd only be another century from dfw, if anyone was interested, I might be up to riding up there and meeting some of you.

We had fun riding one of the velomobiles! If it weren't so hilly...

Glad you guys were able to represent RBENT!

Though looking at the photos, it looks like more of a "weird pedal powered vehicle" rally than a bent rally.  I find them interesting pieces of moving art but riding a recumbent is weird enough without my trike having an umbrella attached.

Velomobiles are always interesting though.  I've been lucky enough to ride in a couple - a WAW and an Alleweder like the one in Dan's photos.  They're neat and surprisingly fast once you get them going, but they're HOT.  It was maybe 60 out when I rode mine and I was sweating buckets within a mile.  They'd make for GREAT winter bikes - no wonder most of them are in Canada.

'Different' vehicles have shown up the last two years, but then a lot of cyclists think 'bent riders are about as weird as it gets. I try to be pretty low-key but the things that work well make that a bit difficult. I was a little upset when I first got there for missing most of the event due to arriving so late, so apologies if that came across. Took me a bit to let it go and sit down and talk with people, and some pretty interesting people show up there.

Last year the guy I thought owned velomobilesusa.com was there showing off some of their redesigned parts for the usa version. I'm pretty sure he was not the same one there Sunday though. Does anyone know for sure? Barry of Scarab Trikes was there this year, and he puts on a good display and Mike has a lot of inventory for people to test ride and people were riding trikes around the parking lot continuously so there were quite a few 'normal' 'bents. Trikes do seem to be the most fun for riding around that area though. Would need to get a road recumbent out on the road...

Clark and I rode back to Helotes today. Clark was riding the pa trike and he had a chance to really get familiar with it and open it up a bit and stretch his legs and had a blast. I made it back through Austin and stopped in Pflugerville for the night. Head for Waco with my daughter tomorrow. See if the access road goes all the way through.

Could be that my memory is just that far off also. The guy there last year was a retired airframe designer and had examples of the parts he was redesigning to make them stronger and lighter. We talked a little about it as I used to design automated weld inspection and airframe inspection systems, etc. I'm pretty sure it's the same company. I don't know of any other velomobile manufacturer in Midland :^)
