Title: East Texas Bike Tour Post by richardr on Mar 20th, 2009, 10:57am March 6-9, Vicky and I camped at Bob Sandlin State park and scouted East Texas state parks for a possible multi-day bike tour. With help from the Clown riding group we put together this plan. It will be a 3 day/4 night tour covering 3 parks in East Texas, Daingerfield, Caddo and Atlanta. The weekend of May 1-3. I know and apologize that this is the MS150, but every weekend has conflicts. The trip starts the afternoon/evening of Thursday, April 30 in Daingerfield SP where we camp for the night. Friday we ride to Caddo SP and camp there for the night. Saturday we ride to Atlanta SP and camp there for the night. Sunday we ride back to Daingerfield SP and camp there for the night. Monday we go home. There is flexibility for people who need to join the tour late or must leave early. Surprisingly it turns out that all 3 parks are between 42 and 43 miles apart. Camping: I made reservations for a single tent camping site at each park. A camping site will accommodate up to 8 campers. If we have more, we'll make additional site reservations. You may have to pay a $2 entry fee at each park. We will try to work something out with the park to allow everyone on bikes in under our car Texas annual pass, but officially it doesn't cover bikes. Car Parking: I spoke with John at Daingerfield SP. He said they would allow everyone to park their cars in the locked maintenance lot while we are on the tour. Your Stuff: Vicky will drive our Mazda5 minivan between camps. We will carry as much of everyone's stuff as it will hold. If there is more, Thomas Jenkins' wife (Joella) will drive their pickup to carry the rest. You may also carry some or all your stuff on your bike/in a trailer if you prefer. Sleeping Arrangements: If you have a tent, bring it. We have extra space if needed, Thomas Jenkins has a 6 person tent. I will be bringing a small tent for Vicky and I, but have a 12x12 ft monster tent I can also bring. Although the web site said there was an 8 person limit at a camp site, I could not find any limit in the number of tents. Meals: Vicky volunteered to take care of breakfasts and dinners (4 of each). The cost for the food, dishes, etc for all 8 meals is $60 per person. Here is the menu she based the cost on: - Breakfasts (the same each day): A variety of egg dishes, oatmeal (instant packages), dried cereal, milk, hot chocolate, instant coffee with flavored creamer. - Dinners (1 each day): Spaghetti with broccoli, chili, beef stew, curried hamburger and rice with green beans. Sodas to drink and cheese ball/cracker appetizer each day. - Evening desserts (1 each day): brownies, s'mores, chocolate chip cookies, yellow cake with chocolate icing. Snacks: Variety pack of chips. If you want to participate, Vicky needs the money 2 wks before the trip so she can buy the food. Roads: Vicky and I drove all the roads. For the most part they look good. There are a lot of hills, but none looked insurmountable. (Of course we were in a car.) There is some chip seal and in some places the shoulders are less than 1 foot. Most of the roads were relatively quiet, but we do go through Atlanta, on a busy large 4 lane road with wide shoulders. What to do if interested: If you are interested in joining us please e-mail me with your e-mail address, number of people going, if you want Vicky to provide your meals and any unique circumstances you have, including not being able to participate in the entire tour. I will send you a generic list of recommended stuff to bring and a detailed description of the roads and maps. I'll be out of town this weekend, but I'll respond next week. |

Title: Re: East Texas Bike Tour Post by richardr on Mar 23rd, 2009, 7:58pm I had expected a little more response on this tour. :-/ Right now there are a couple definites from the Clown riding group and maybe a couple more interested. I know at least one person can't make the ride due to the conflict with the MS150. Are there others who would go if not for the conflict? Richard |

Title: Re: East Texas Bike Tour Post by FrankB on Apr 13th, 2009, 4:46pm I think I could do that. Let me know if you have enough riders to do it. On my way from Glen Rose I could pick up someone needing a ride to East Texas. Don't have a tent but I don't snore much either. [smiley=smiley.gif] |

Title: Re: East Texas Bike Tour Post by richardr on Apr 23rd, 2009, 5:10pm Tour Update: 8-) Right now we have between 10 and 13 people going on the tour. We have room for a couple more. We are limited to 16 due to the number of people allowed at 2 Texas State Park camping sites. If any one else is interested in attending, please contact me right away. We will be making final preparations over the weekend. The information in the first posting is still correct. But for those interested in a Thursday and Monday ride, Ken James has arranged riding to Daingerfield SP from Winnsboro on Thursday and back again Monday. |
