Title: Hill Country 600K race
Post by Killer Bee on Mar 4th, 2009, 2:38pm

Well the three stooges(Ray Torrey,Peggy & myself-I don't know which one of us is Moe ,Larry or Curly) have been asked by John Schlitter to crew for him during the upcoming 600k race on 3/14 in the Texas Hill country. John is estimating 20 hours or so to complete the ride(what's scary is that the crew-US ,are responsible for keeping him on course. Yikes,I wonder how he feels about bonus miles-instead of a 600k ,how about 650K).  [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

This is only going to add to our Hellweek experience ,all are looking forward to the event, even though the three of us have a combined ZERO crew experience. How hard up must John be for a crew? I just hope we don't run over the guy during the race. We'll have to get some crew practice in before the event(how close to follow him at night, hand signals,etc...).  [smiley=runover.gif]

Here's the url link to the event. I love to look at the elevation chart(only because I'll be climbing those hills in a van & not on a bike) & when the route descirption mentions chip seal ,you really gotta appreciate riding along in a mini-van: http://www.raceacrossoregon.com/hillcountry

Good luck to John & several other LSR members signed up for this BEAST of a ride. You can check the current roster by clicking on the tab underneath the tab that says "Hill country 600k". [smiley=cheers.gif]

I'm sure we'll have stories to share ,along with pictures(not just for the race ,but the week of Hellweek). We'll have internet access in the house we're renting(in Fredericksburg). ;D

Shellene and I will see y'all down there, we are running crew for Sharon Stevens.

Talk to me Saturday during the brevet and I can give you some pointers, and horror stories, from my crewing for both Shellene and Mark Metcalf as they did back to back state crossing attempts.

Bryan ,yeah ,that sounds good. I know John talked about getting some practice runs in at night(before the event). Anything you can add would be appreciated.

My friend Steve - enjoy riding those hills in the van, and learn each hill.  If we ride either the 200k on Monday, or the infamous Hell Week Tuesday "Leakey Death Ride", you'll ride over the exact same hills.  FWIW, a Texas Motorcycle magazine I subscribe to has rated several of those roads as the best in the state for motorcycles (climbing, twisty, steep roads).  For example, hwy 337 between Medina and Leakey.  Just outside of Vanderpool you get to climb "the elevator shaft".

That's one of the reasons I keep going back to Hell Week.  I love those roads.

Ray ,here's the difference...200k vs. 600k & race vs. ride. I'm sure our Hellweek will be challenging. If we can ride the 400k this weekend,we can ride the Hellweek.
