Title: LSR 200K 1/10/09 7am
Post by Kwijybow on Jan 8th, 2009, 8:44am

I see Greg might be doing the 200 or 300, is anybody else going?  I'm planning on doing my first 200 of the year at a slow pace I might add.  Currently planning to ride the track bike to get acclimation time.  Should be an interesting day back into the wind in the afternoon.  Too bad we can't have today's or Friday's weather on Saturday.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Well, if the weather forecast doesn't change a bit, I'm staying the heck home.  I saw 29 degrees atthe start and no higher than 50 by the time I'd be done.  That's likely too cold for these bones.

I wish if it would stay below 45 or so make it a nice excursion. The 50s are the point where I need to start unlayering. Now where did I put those studded tires for all that ice that should be out there with an overnight below freezing  ;)

Yes yes.. I still fear any different colored or wet pavement when it has been below freezing late. I wonder how loud studs would be with my ear inches from the rear wheel instead of a few feet away?

Peggy & I were originally planning on riding the 300K. Due to the unkind forecast ,recovering from a nagging injury ,& slight burnout...we're going to pass. We're thinking of possibly picking up a 300K ACP in Houston late next month.

We're riding with Bud on Saturday.

Ok sooo. Where do I go in the oasis to get my card signed at the end of this ride say if I was to go and such? Italy rides are just at the tiger mart but isn't that place at the marina a fancy place? I'll probably forget to ask saturday and i'm sure to be returning alone  ;D

3* of the other 4 brevets I have always just handed the cards back to the ride coordinator at the end.

*Well in the case of the New Years ride it was sneak up and try and not wake up the host while sliding the cards under the mat and finding how loud my bebops were on my keen sandals. Then dropping my wallet/phone/que sheet and a few other things when I picked up the mat. After picking up my wallet of course I dropped all the change that I stuck in there during the ride. oops

Hi Mark,

If you're riding the 200, there will still be a large contigent out on the 300, I would guess there would be a bag on Dan's or Brenda's car.  The store at the end is the same one we used on the infamous GP2CLE ride.  Also given you're pavement scootin' height, and the expected return headwind you are unlikely to be slower than me!  If for some reason you were to miss getting your card in with the pile you can mail it to Dan, don't hesitate though as they have to be all in quickly, you might call him to let him know its coming.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Yeah on the italy ride I did it was a 200/300k and I got back before any of the 300k riders. After the 2nd to last reststop and one of the other riders saying they usually got passed by the 300k riders I tried my best to keep ahead of them. When I got back to Italy I went into the tigermart and got the card signed before putting it in the envelope though.

When we did the GP2CLE we all gave you the cards and I think you headed over to the oasis somewhere to get them signed. Is that right and if so did you just go to the matradi, the checkout or is there somewhere else to go?

I mean this would be my 5th brevet/perm you'd think I'd have clue about that but nope  :)

ps.. Track bike?  :o

Mark,

You get your card signed at the marina, which is a right turn after you walk out on the dock, instead of the left turn you make to get to the Oasis. The marina is usually full of smelly fishermen, so you'll fit right in.  ;D

Oops I forgot I got them signed.  Yes you head down the ramp towards the restaurant and the store is on the right side.
I've seen some folks finish a 300 within the 200K time limit, but with the wind Saturday I'm thinking there will be some slower times on the 300K.

We'll see how the track bike goes.  My longest ride up to this point on it is just under 40 miles.  It fits me well, but a long slog into the wind might be a bit wearing.  Also there is a steep hill not long after Maypearl on the way back that I might have to resort to low gear on.

Take Care,
Nelson.

Yes, that hill is on Old Buena Vista Road, at about mile 90, after you've started to get tired, and it is kind of tough. Orphan Hill, right after Itasca, is a chore for me, too.

But my personal best 200k time came on that route, an 8:06 that I'll probably never equal now that my lungs are a train wreck.

Nelson ,we're going to have start calling you "Fixie".  Yes ,the 200k route is the "Rio Vista Rumble". The 300K is "Lake to Lake" route. Hey EV, you're getting to be an old pro at these LSR rides.  This a ride is a brevet,so you do not have to get receipts at controls. Make sure you get your card signed for the appropriate time(don't get your card signed at 6:45am if the ride starts at 7:00am.).

You guys ride safe & stay WARM!

wow - that's an amazing time.  I haven't come close to that yet on any ride.

Reading these posts are driving me nutz....

I'm fortunate to be able to ride at all and shouldn't complain. I can't help that my mind wants Rando Ray back on the bike, a new bike too, but the pain and restricted ankle rotation simply won't allow it.

:'(

I know that feeling all too well. It was June last year before I was finally up to doing my first 200k of the year. I patiently worked my way back, being careful not to overdo it, and you need to do the same. Hang in there, my friend!
